A data for the next Alabama Code Camp has been set for January 31st, 2009!
The nextAlabama Code Camp is right around the corner (1/31/2009). To register for this event go to http://www.clicktoattend.com/?id=134437. A CodeCamp is an all day developer geekfest. It's free, by the community for the community.
Sorry for such short notice but Aubrey and I discussed it and
thought it best to postpone this meeting due to family priorities that have
come up for me. We will work with USM to find us a new location that fits
within their schedule as soon as we can. We are going to tentatively schedule
it for the first week in December.
I’m terribly sorry to have to postpone the meeting, we’ll
reschedule as soon as we can.
Thanks for the 4 RSVPs... could I ask the Lurkers to just post at
least a "[yes or no] I [can or cannot] make it"... and to help
promote 1 tad little bit (or hit-D now)? read on:
As the PF said "Wish I were there".
I hope that everyone will help this UG and bring at least one person
with them. Also I wish each person from a company, with more than
just themselves working dotNet, would please send an email notice to
the rest of the dotNet crew to let them know of this valuable
resource. I sometimes drive 100 miles from Huntsville, Al to
Nashville, Tn for similar meetings.
As K. Dollard spoke last night @ HUNTUG.org (gems and dragons of
VS.NET): we developers can't keep up (easily) on our own. We must
depend on and use the free resources of the dotNet Users Groups
community to stay current with what's new and why it's cost effective.
I add to that saying learning simple tricks, (C#) control backslash d
(Ctrl+\+D) being my favorite to note, also increases productivity as
well. Learning - for instance - how to use LINQ... this is truly
phenomenal - Rock-n-Roll K.Elder!
... K.Dollard, in 1 minute (wow!), told how-to write extension
methods last night in both VB.NET:
<System.Runtime.CompilerServices.Extension> tag b4 a Shared module
function
and C# (too easy!):
use "this" keyword (this string firstArg, ..) preceding first
argument in a static method in a static class
This sort of stuff eludes normal (even abby-normal) humans!
But, as the Beatles said, "...with a little help from (my) friends"
you can elevate yourself to entirely new levels so simply it
must "be"... your Users Group just has to succeed! It has to exist!!
Invite someone. Send email to other local Devs. Post a flyer on your
cube. Twitter or Blog about the new UG (I'm going to
twitter.com/danwygant about it now)!
...Persuade your company president to help sponsor the UG (pizza,
drinks, swag: books, software, branded-Tee's, widgets, stressballs,
pens, etc)
Whatever it takes to help this great state of Mississippi rise out of
the mire of no UG's. Make this one a lasting success. I helped found
HUNTUG.org a decade ago, albiet we struggle on occasion, we're still
here, and VSdotNetUG.org too - I founded a couple months after the
initial release of VS.NET on summer '02 as a DBA for HUNTUG (which
has NPO status with the IRS). Sure we have had low $$ for pizza at
times, but that's ok... the point isn't the pizza anyhow, it's the
knowledge and lasting network of peeps. (speaking of which, look me
up on LinkedIn and add me to your network if you wish)
I'm the INETA dude here to help you. It's my goal to help Mikey
Gousset up in north Mississippi as well, and I truly feel now it the
time, but you ALL have to help with getn the word out about this
invaluable resource and see if you can find sponsors who will help
K.Elder with future sponsorship.
Dan Wygant, INETA Membership Manager for Al,Ms,La
PS - I lied, I loved the pizza last night almost as much as Kathleen
Dollard's Gems and Dragons presentations.
PSS - I lied again, I loved K.D.'s presentation so much I now declare
her as my #1 favorite presenter, even over ScottGu, and J.Prosise! I
learned!! LOTS!!!

I will be coming to Hattiesburg for the meeting! If anyone from Mobile, AL to the Mississipi Coast would like to hitch a ride, just let me know. Also LANUG has a meeting on Tuesday November 18th on Reporting Services 2008 - Report Authoring (Http://loweraldotnet.org). I will see if anyone from their wants to come to Hattiesburg as well.
If you have the meeting via Live Meeting send me the link and I will pass it along.
Thank you,

Hi folks,
Are any of you interested in meeting this month?
If you need a speaker, I'm interested in helping. I am the INETA
Users Group Mentor for Mississippi. My personal goal is to approve
you for INETA membership ASAP.
If I can't find one local to the gulf-coast, I'll try to send one
from INETA or help you myself.
Indeed, if your leader will simply register this Users Group with
INETA, I will attempt to convince a big-name speaker to let INETA
send em' to ya on short order. Or I'll die tryin'.
I'm wishing very much for your success, and would even go as far as
to drive there from Fayetteville Tennessee to support you. If you
like I can share some of what I've learned about Silverlight 2 RC0 vs
WPF3.5SP1 regarding XAML.
I like informal meetings with constant Q&A to drive the presentation.
I will be here in Huntsville Alabama for tomorrow's weekly http://HowToVS.Net SIG meeting and would
happily send you the
LiveMeeting URL if you'd like. We simply meet for 1hr or so and talk
tech. We ask questions and we answer - or seek answers via code on
the fly. Like an Ad-Hoc meeting where everyone can help with the
presentation - lotsa laptops. We use ShareView sometimes too to avoid
the need for a projector.
If you can set a stage for a presenter, let me know and I'll approve
your UG right away since you've already meet a few time anyhow. INETA
will be more than happy to support your Users Group efforts in
Mississippi! You have really started something here to build your
dotNet community.
Thanks, look me up on LinkedIn.com and twitter.com

If you are in
the surrounding Hattiesburg, MS area (Jackson, Mobile, Gulfport, Biloxi, New
Orleans, Slidell, Vicksburg, Meridian, Laurel, etc) there is a free MSDN event
coming to Hattiesburg on September 19th called the MSDN Southern Fried

The
event is a four hour event with Developer Evangelist Glen Gordon and Architect
Evangelist Chad Brooks. Hattiesburg is the last stop of a five city tour
they are doing throughout the South.
What is an MSDN
Roadshow?
For
those that have never gone to an event like this, this is where Microsoft sends
their Evangelist out into the heart of America to make sure the development
community is familiar with the latest and greatest software. Think of it
as free training! There is no sales pitch, their job is to simply tell
you about the latest releases and answer questions. Larger events are
done in bigger cities typically earlier in the year like Chicago, Detroit,
etc. Now is your chance to get the same material locally in your own
area. Definitely worth the price of admission!

It was great to meet you the other night at the meeting. I
really appreciate you keeping the dialogue going after the meeting.
To answer your question about flyers, yes there are/were
flyers! Vanessa Molden at Professional Outreach had flyers made up.
There were supposed to be some put up around campus (I’m not sure if you
saw them or not). For the meeting in November we could use your assistance
with that for sure. I’ll put you in contact with Vanessa
later on once we settle on who the speaker is going to be so you can assist
with that. The flyers Vanessa had made up looked really good.

First off, I would like to introduce myself. I'm Doug
Burkhalter. For those that attended the meeting yesterday, I was in the back
behind Aubrey. For those that didn't make it...well, I won't use my first
message to insult people, because I'm sure you had a good reason, but
still...:D Anyhow, I would just like to say I'm glad to see some more technical
groups popping up around here.
I would also like to mention that I have started to spread the word about the
group around campus in what limited fashion I can; I've told one teacher about
it so far, but he's working on a large project in .NET with several other
people.
Also, I was wondering about any sort of flyers or such for posting around campus.
I can make something up, but I don't have the best design sense in the world.
But I'm all for spreading the message, posting flyers on boards all around, and
so on. There are a lot of students around here in classes that cover .NET, so I
think it'd be good to recruit that way.
Feel free to veto or offer or so such as you think. After all, I'm brand new,
not trying to take over, just wanting to do my part.
Thanks for the great group, and I look forward to the future with it!
PS: I don't want to post too much contact information, not to keep it from the
group but from any random spam surfers in the world. Hoping to keep this
account pretty clear of spam. But if you have jabber or google talk, this
e-mail address is my primary logon.
