It seems to be time to vote on the task for the next competition... so
here's the traditional voting form. I've added the tasks that have
recently been suggested on this mailinglist.
You can distribute up to 5 (five) points among the tasks. That is, you
can give a single task 5 points, or you can give one task 3 points and
another task 2 points, or you can give each of five tasks 1 point,...
Of course you have to use positive decimal integer numbers, i.e. 1 for
one, 2 for two, 3 for three, 4 for four, and 5 for five. All other
numbers are not allowed. ;)
Write the numbers in the brackets ("[ ]") in front of the task
suggestion(s) of your choice.
Send your votes to:

IIRC there is a copyright problem only for _creating_ GIF files.
I checked "About" in Internet Explorer and Netscape Navigator. Neither even
mentions Compuserve.

Yes. Was quite an ordeal for you wasn't it....

I think a small virus program would be enjoyable, but regret too, that it
would not be a good idea, because of the nature of it.

Howdy!
I also detected the virus but it was confined to Leg-0's ENTRY.COM.
Perhaps Leg-0 should get extra points for fooling McAfee. It's
definitely a false alarm. I was using VirusScan 4.0.3.
Ben and I have recently discovered another undocumented "feature" of
McAfee. VShield's Download Scan will not allow downloading zip files
that contain zip files. It filters them out without any warning or
explanation.
I cast my vote for definitely NOT having any kind of virus writing
contest. It's hard enough getting folks to run my programs without being
thought of as a virus writer. Even a benign virus can cause plenty of
problems. If nothing else, it's embarrassing to accidentally spread it.
I like the idea of a gif viewer for the next contest but wonder if there
would be any interest in code that takes advantage of the FPU, such as a
Mandelbrot generator.
Thanks,
Boreal

well, I don't like personality LZW (or is it some other LZ clone in GIF)
decompression, and the other aspect of it may be speed, but at all,
does not sound like bad idea... :) (just personal ranting ... ignore it)

Hi everybody...
well I thought about a topic for a new compo, and what about a really small
gif-viewer. Let's say 320x200. I've already seen a size-optimized
pcx-viewer, but gif would be quite interesting. (perhaps with a scroll
function)...

Err, let's "skip" this task idea, otherwise we might get problems with
the FBI... ;)

Actually, we've already had this competition on IRC once. :)
Though I'm sure the virus specs could be changed, and the smallest one that
we came up with could be made smaller too. We had a non-resident appending
virus that infected all .COM files in the current directory with itself, at
somewhere around 85-95 bytes, if you're interested at all. ;)

Hi all,
This virus thing in hugi compo sounds very funny. Considering our entries
have 100-200 bytes I hardly believe is any of them infected. Maybe one idea in a
future compo it will be to do shortest virus possible (harmless, of course, only
multiplication) LOL.

Hi Adok,
How have you been?
I just checked all three of the entry.com files that I have and each
have the same file contents. i.e.: are identical.
I bet it is just the virus checker.
I unzipped all three files and placed them in a single directory and scanned
them. McAfee did not find any viruses. However, if the file is in a ZIP
file, it does find the virus.
I posted this info just for a thought. I didn't really think anyone would
care. :-)
Anyway, have a great evening/night,
Ben

Have you tried if the two entry.com files are identical (fc /b)? I'd be
surprised if they weren't, but just to get sure that the mistake has to
lie with the anti-virus program.

> Hi guys,
Hi Adok, Hello everyone, (hi claw).
Just for your information, I updated my Virus Scanners .DAT files
last night due to this "lovebug" thing, and then scanned my system.
McAfee Virus Checker found the ENTRY.COM (example entry) in both
the Beta Release and Final Release to have the GENERATOR.MPE virus.
(Scanned the Beta Release last night, then scanned again this morning
and "tagged" both files)
But of course it probably just has some code that is close to the
signature of this virus.
However, McAfee did not find this virus in the original release
of the ENTRY.COM file?????
I was just wondering if anyone else found this too.
<snip>
Thanks for the fun, and looking forward to spending more time
on HC12.

Hi guys,
Thank you for all your replies. Phew, I'd wondered whether the
mailinglist was working, as usually lots of objections to the entries
are posted right after uploading them. It's good if this time all of
them are running fine.
I've just updated the world league table and am now uploading - so
you'll probably be able to check it out now at
http://www.hugi.de/compo/.
Any suggestions for task of the next competition can be posted to this
mailinglist!

sure there is everything fine :-) And I'm looking forward for the next
compo...
The only what makes me a bit angry is that some guys managed it to get the
file names as instructions into their code.. I tried too, but without
success ;-)
bye, Cig... and greetings too all competitors...
Hi there,
If you ask me, everything is fine. I got the place I deserve - for now
;-). So what's more to ask for? I saw the sources for first 5, 6 entries in the
top. They got better ideas than me. So everything's OK. Haven't test'em all but
I trust your judgement.

That'd be a moderator. Not every mailing list has one however; there are
both good and bad sides to it. Moderation means delays before the mails
