Re: HUM_FORUM: hum devastation

Hi Geoff et al.,

I can't believe I took a moment to get on the net; glad I did.  When measurements were being made I inquired about the names of some instruments being used.  Some I wrote down, some I didn't note.  I don't have quick access to my notes at this time.  However, I do know what the instruments tested for, basically one engineer used a computer based program to assess for vibrations; another engineer used an instrument to assess for sound and/or vibrations.  Of course you know that sound is generated from vibrations.  Both engineers determined low frequency sounds/vibrations at my home.  The electric company also used a hand held instrument similar to one of the other engineers.  The last test was done by a technician with the electric company; he used an instrument that measures ELF/EMF.  This tech. found again that my house had extremely low frequency fields inside and outside.  He stated that typical homes have a 0.9 electromagnetic field and the average level at my home was 0.1; this corresponded with a previous assessment done.  Note, that some areas of my house read 0.0 on the technician's gage.

One engineer took physical measurements in and around my home, as did the electric company.  I found some of the instruments used by engineers, on the internet, for sale.   Some are expensive.  When I get an  opportunity to dig up  my records I will let you know the names of some of the tools.

Geoff, I am curious if you let anybody else come into your home and listen for the hum.  I did and my daughter heard and felt its vibrations.  One of the engineers heard it clearly.  I did a short survey in my neighborhood, and found two neighbors who have been hearing it. One is bothered by it's nuisance while another said he is not annoyed by it.  Apparently, people have different sensitivities to the Hum which I believe is electromagnetic in nature, based upon all the information I've gather and upon my personal experience with it.  For myself, Tinnitis was ruled out.  Also, sleeping somewhere else might shed light upon your experience with the hum.  I must say, however, that since there is evidence that the Hum exist within neighborhoods, communities, such as it does in mine (past tense, I've moved), you might have to travel a bit to get away from it.  I did not sue anybody.  My electric company, I believe, did investigate the problem and made some attempts to alleviate it.  There is no proof as to what the source of the Hum is at my home, so I cannot reasonably point the finger at anybody or entity.  All I know, is that it exist; that is confirmed.  I have been disappointed with various departments of environmental health and city codes regulators, who did nothing to investigate the problem.  I also made contact with the EPA, to no avail.  These entities just passed the buck, by referring me to each other.  Getting the electric company to seriously respond was also not easy.  We sufferers must support each other and continue to reach out for help by those entities who are paid to protect us from such health hazards.  I will continue to communicate with such entities in an effort to get their support, but for now people like myself, the sensitive ones, are becoming a good source of  support.  Oh, the weakness in electric company's materials, considered as a suspected source of the hum, as I recall were the conduits or ducts. I believe there was also mention of transformers, but as I said I am without my notes which might entail the specifics.  Being that I'm very tired now; it's late, I might be getting my terms wrong.

Take care all,

Donna

Hi Geoff, et al. :

Thank you for your concern and response. I am not one with much time for internet chat on any subject.  In brief, my home was assessed by multiple independent engineers, who did assess extremely low frequencies in and around my home, using a variety of measurement tools.  My local electric company, which sent a team of experts to my home considered that the ELF/EMF problem stemmed from a weakness in their materials which serve my home and neighborhood; more measurements and interventions were done but the problem was not alleviated.  The electric company reassessed my property following the changes they made in electrical wiring/ducts located underground,

Would be curious to know exactly what measurements they made and found, and what was the "weakness in their materials".

How much settlement did you get from them, or did you have to sue them ?
