NEW PUBLICATION: *Water Options for India in a Changing Climate*

*The report tries to capture the relevant issues for Indian Water Sector in
the context of changing climate and highlights the options for coping and
mitigating climate change challenges in water sector in India.*

*“The opportunities provided by climate change are still within
reach.**India, with the world’s largest water infrastructure also has
the biggest
performance deficit in terms of what that infrastructure can deliver and
what it is delivering now. Groundwater is India’s water lifeline and
opportunity beckons to make it sustainable. Our foodgrains requirements and
demand for water for the same would go up, but there are huge opportunities
like increasing soil moisture holding capacity, taking up chauka systems in
grazing lands, organic farming, System of Rice Intensification, System of
Crop Intensification, rethinking cropping pattern, protecting local water
systems, etc. Glaciers are melting, but we have the options of creating
large number of local storages and also using underground aquifer storage
space. Urban water demands are going up but we also have the slew of hardly
explored options including local water harvesting, protection of local
water systems, demand side management, achieving proper sewage treatment
and recycling, participatory governance, among others.”*

(From the SANDRP Press Release)

The 93+ix page report is divided in 12 chapters, including on Rainfall,
Himalayan Glaciers, Groundwater, Rivers, Floodplains, Wetlands and water
bodies, Big Water Infrastructure, Agriculture, Urban water options and
Positive local water adaptation and a case study each on *Organic
Farming*(by Shripad Dharmadhikary) and
*Forest-Agriculture settings in Western Ghats* (by Dr Latha Anantha and S
Unnikrishnan).

*Price:* Rs. 200* For copies:* Please write to ht.sandrp@.../

Hi,

In about a months time I'm embarking on a two week canoe journey in northern
Canada on a large river as part of a historical re-enactment. I'm recording the
experience in a daily log and hoping to undertake some scientific data gathering
along the way using older technology and analysis methods. I'm interested in
people's idea's on what I can use to measure river depth and velocity at various
camp locations along the way. I have a crude sextant to determine relative
position. I have some thoughts as to how to go about this but I'm hoping for
better idea's. Anyone have any idea's or experience with using older equipment
and methods in this type of situation?

You may want to consider using the WinRiver software. A report by Simpson
(2001), available on the USGS website, explains the principles behind taking
such measurements.

I assume that whatever you'd be using to measure depth and velocity
would need to be carried in your canoe? I also assume that you would
not be using any expensive/advanced equipment?

In that case, you might try a rope, marked off in
feet/inches/centimeters, with a heavy weight attached as your depth
gauge. Realize that the measurments will likely be only approximate, as
the river current will likely drag the rope a bit, causing some errors
in the readings. Also, if the river has a soft bottom, it might make it
tougher to "feel" when it hits bottom. Also be careful of getting the
rope snagged on underwater obstructions. Also, the depth you measure
will vary, because the cross-section of the river will vary at a
particular location.

As for velocity, exactly what are you trying to measure? The point
velocity in the flow stream, especially for a large river, will vary
depending upon both the depth you take the measurement, and the distance
from the river bank. Therefore, if you want the "average" velocity of
the river, you'd need to take many measurements at a particular point of
your travels. On top of that, you would need some type of velocity
meter that would likely need electric power. I'm not sure how you'd
accomplish that task.

Good luck on your trip.

Book Description from Amazon:

With recent innovations in the arena of remote sensing and geographic
information systems, the use of geoinformatics in applied geomorphology
is receiving more attention than ever. Geoinformatics in Applied
Geomorphology examines how modern concepts, technologies, and methods in
geoinformatics can be used to solve a wide variety of applied
geomorphologic problems, such as characterization of arid, coastal,
fluvial, aeolian, glacial, karst, and tectonic landforms; natural hazard zoning
and mitigations; petroleum exploration; and groundwater
exploration and management.

Using case studies to illustrate concepts and methods, this book covers:

Arid environments, such as the Thar desert, West Texas, the Qatar Peninsula, and
the Dead Sea areas
Coastal shoreline changes in Kuwait
Coastal zone management in India
Estuarine bathymetric study of Tampa Bay, Florida
Fluvial landforms of the Elbe river basin, Germany
Subsurface coastal geomorphology and coastal morphological changes due to
tsunamis in the East coast of India
The Himalayas, Jammu & Kashmir, Western Ghats, and Precambrian terrain of South
India

The result of extensive research by an interdisciplinary team of
contributors, Geoinformatics in Applied Geomorphology is designed for
students, researchers, and professionals in the areas of geomorphology,
geological engineering, geography, remote sensing, and geographic
information systems.

Hi All,

I intend to calibrate recharge using Pest. The recharge is initially
assumed as drainage component of cropping system model. while running
modflow in PMWIn it was observed that this recharge was quite high
and it needs to calibrated for each cell. I have made ten recharge
zones based on the percentage drainage as recharge and then used pest
for calibration of these zones in one go.

1. after running pest I observed great improvement in hydraulic heads.
but could find only a single value of recharge in each zone. Does
pest assume constant recharge value for each of the zone. If not where
is the recharge matrix written.

2. Are there some online tutorials available for PEST usage and

A book entitled "Earth" is considered a basic reference text in many
universities around the world. One of the authors of this book is Frank Press.
He is currently the President of the Academy of Sciences in the USA. Previously,
he was the science advisor to former USA President Jimmy Carter. His book says
that mountains have underlying roots
[p. 435]
. These roots are deeply embedded in the ground. So mountains have a shape like
a peg as is seen in an example on page 220 in the same book. Another
illustration shows how the mountains are peg-like in shape, due to their deep
roots
[p. 158]
.

This is how the Quran described mountains. God said in the Quran:

Have We not made the earth as a bed, and the mountains as pegs?
[Noble Quran 78:6-7]

Modern earth sciences have proven that mountains have deep roots under the
surface of the ground and that these roots can reach several times their
elevations above the surface of the ground. So the suitable word to describe
mountains on the basis of this information is the word 'peg', since most of a
properly set peg is hidden under the surface of the ground. The history of
science tells us that the theory of mountains having deep roots was introduced
only in the latter half of the nineteenth century.
[Geological Concept of Mountains p.5]

Mountains also play an important role in stabilizing the crust of the earth.
[Geological Concept of Mountains pp. 44-45]
. They hinder the shaking of the earth. God said in the Quran:

And He has set firm mountains in the earth so that it would not shake with
you...
[Noble Quran 16:15]

Likewise the modern theory of plate tectonics holds that mountains work as
stabilizers for the earth. This knowledge about the role of mountains as
stabilizers for the earth has just begun to be understood in the framework of
plate tectonics since the late 1960's
[Geological Concept of Mountains p. 5]
.

Could anyone during the time of the prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) have
known of the true shape of mountains? Could any one imagine that the solid
massive mountain which he sees before him, actually extends deep into the earth
and has a root, as scientists assert? A large number of books of geology when
discussing mountains, only describe that part which is above the surface of the
earth. This is because these books were not written by specialists in geology.
However, modern geology has confirmed the truth of the Quran's verses.

A hydrologic model can be defined as a mathematical representation of the flow
of water and its constituents on some part of the land surface or subsurface
environment. Hydrologists are mainly concerned with evaluation of catchment
response for planning, development and operation of various water resources
schemes. Conventional models require considerable hydrological, meteorological
and spatial data. Collection of land use, soil and other spatial data is
expensive, time consuming and a difficult process. Remote Sensing and
Geographical Information System (GIS) play a rapidly increasing role in
collection and analysis of such spatial data. The role of remote sensing in
runoff calculation is generally to provide a source of input data or as an aid
for estimating equation coefficients and model parameters. Experience has shown
that satellite data can be interpreted to derive thematic information on land
use, soil, vegetation, drainage, etc which, combined with conventionally
measured climatic parameters (precipitation, temperature etc) and topographic
parameters height, contour, slope, provide the necessary inputs to the
hydrological models. GIS provides efficient tools for data input into database,
and retrieval of selected data items for further processing.

The climate of earth was never stable for any extended period. Potential
climate change and its impacts on hydrologic systems pose a threat to water
resources throughout the world. In order to understand the impact of climate
change on hydrological systems, it is customary to use climate models which are
mathematical descriptions of large scale physical processes governing the
climate system. However, it is not possible to make reliable predictions of
regional hydrological changes directly from climate models due to their coarse
resolution and the simplification of hydrological cycle in climate models.

The Course will consist of lectures by Scientists & Professors from NIH, IIT
Roorkee and other nearby institutions in India. The lectures will be supported
by tutorials and computer sessions. We plan to cover both theory and practice in
right proportion. This course will be conducted as a two-way interaction with
the participants so that the problems/experiences of people from the field
organizations as well as academia are shared. Participants will be given a
mini-project based on course topics.

Following topics shall be covered in this Course:

o Introduction to remote sensing and GIS;
o Hydrologic modelling
o Use of remote sensing and GIS in hydrologic modelling
o Downscaling techniques;
o Hydrologic modelling of a catchment by using the SWAT model
o Hydrologic impacts with emphasis on climate change;

The course is intended for engineers, scientists, and officers working in water
resources/irrigation and other related departments of Central/State Govt and
those who are in academic profession. Post-graduate and research scholars are
also encouraged to attend the course. Prospective participants may bring their
data sets which can be analyzed during the tutorials.

Dear Sir/Madam

Greetings from Aqua Foundation!!!

As our distinguished Delegate over a period we once again look forward to having
you with us for a very important topic for this year. Water : Vision 2050. The
main theme of the event followed by very intense sub- themes is desired to be
beneficial for all of us and wishfully we should be able to come up with an
almost well defined road- map towards optimum utilization of water resources.

For last 5 years, Aqua Foundation’s aim has been to make all the vital ends
meet. Right from policy makers, to bureaucrats, to scientists, to researchers,
to industries and so on…however water’s thirst is not that easy to be quenched.
Water’s requirement of extremely deep attention from our end requires more and
more and lots of great meaningful attention. That is why in our Water: Vision
2050 we have kept the themes very dynamic touching upon even themes like
‘ The Effective involvement of Children for Water’.

From labs, from embassy houses, from parliament houses, from industries, from
the mouths of water activists…now is the time wherein from boardrooms to drawing
rooms each one should be seen working on formulating action steps, each one
should be seen implementing these actions, each one to say – I care cos each
drop counts. And then we will actually be able to achieve our Water: Vision 2050
in an empowered style.

So contribute your valuable research, innovations, thoughts even desires and
dreams. Let each one pitch towards Water: Vision 2050. I believe I’ve been able
to make my point effectively but let’s see how well does this all written
content wherein each word has come out from the bottom of my heart and the
immense faith & confidence I have in you will inspire you to contribute your
valuable abstract, or your participation as an attendee…its simply about your
meaningful involvement whether as a speaker or as a delegate.

The last date of Abstract submission is 15 August 2012. However my sincerest
request to you will be that kindly send the Abstract well in time, also please
specify whether you will like to make oral or poster presentation.

Further please help us in reaching more and more people. You wish you may share
contacts with us, we can communicate with your suggested contacts directly. Or
just forward my mail to all the concerned in your email accounts address book.
Also please join our World Aqua Congress- Face book/ LinkedIn/ Twitter accounts.
I’m confident that I’m not asking for too much and for a good cause this is the
least you can help me with.

Look forward to welcome you onboard.
