Yes, long live HC; I still code every day. And tilestack is the most
exciting thing to come along in years.
But I finally started playing with Revolution, which I am sure everyone
knows about. After a lot of whining about the differences, I have to admit
it is the way to go. Even the Revolution mail list is exactly like the HC
list from the old days, and everyone who is (or was) anyone is already
there.
At least the programming paradigm that HC fathered is alive and well. The
Rev users all know it and revere it, and that is something...

Hello old HyperCard friends! I just came across a website that all fans of
HyperCard will be very interesting in learning about:
http://www.TileStack.com/
The developers of this site have created a tool to upload old HC stacks to
the Internet and also develop new stacks with their web-based editor! For
more specific information visit: http://tilestack.com/faq/
I'll admit that I've used HyperCard less and less as time has moved forward
and Apple stopped further development of this fine product, but this new
development has seems to be just what developers like me need to continue
work in the HyperCard developing environment. Yea! Long Live HyperCard in
Web 2.0!
If you are as excited about this news as I am, please post on this forum and
use this community as a resource for development (everything from creating a
new stack to coding in HyperTalk, aka "Speak," to integrating your stack

Dear Revolution users,
An ErrorLib user reported a problem with ErrorLib, which we have
fixed. We have also added a new feature.
ErrorLib is a shareware library which gives you control of
execution errors. With ErrorLib, you decide whether errors are
reported and how they are reported. Password protected stacks no
longer hamper bug reports from your clients and you will get all
error information Revolution can possibly provide.
With errorLib, you have a simple light-weight set of scripts
that you can include with your standalones and use in your IDE.
The execution error dialog will no longer lock up your IDE if
you use errorLib instead. You can easily parse error information
and display the error, using either the built-in routines of
errorLib or your own custom error dialog.
New in this version:
- a problem causing the error log files to be useless has been fixed
- the log file now also includes information about platform and
machine
- errors were sometimes parsed as “theParsedData” but are now
parsed correctly
You can download ErrorLib from the Developers section of the
Economy-x-Talk homepage.

Dear friends,
We have just released another beta version of ecxFTP. Compared
with the previous officially announced beta version, there are
striking improvements, such as a series of buttons on top of the
client window and overall improved responsiveness. During the
past six months, many of you sent their comments to
Economy-x-Talk and we are very grateful for your help. We have
paid attention to all your comments and fixed all reported bugs
that we could reproduce. A change log is included with the software.
We are releasing a new beta version, which is available for
download now. The current beta version of ecxFTP has been
created and tested on Mac OS X 10.2 up to and including 10.4.7.
You can download ecxFTP at the following address:
<http://economy-x-talk.com/ecxftp.html>
where you can find versions for both Mac PPC and Mac Intel.
We would very much appreciate a detailed description of your
experiences with ecxFTP. Please, don't forget to include
information about your Mac model, operating system version,
AppleScript version, amount of built-in memory, applications
running simultaneously, and any other information that you deem
relevant to us. Valuable bug reports are rewarded with a free
license. With pleasure, we grab the opportunity to offer other
Revolution users a 50% discount.
We will be licensing ecxFTP in the near future. Quite a few
Revolution developers are struggling making their own FTP
client, usually for a specific server or application, such as
backup services, content management systems, on-line stores, or
workflow systems. Economy-x-Talk will gladly provide you with a
license allowing you to build the FTP client stack into your own
Revolution project. Alternatively, we integrate the stack in
your project, saving you the time to figure out how things work.
Contact us for more information about the licensing scheme.
Best regards,
Mark Schonewille

Dear Revolution users,
After removing the last few glitches from ErrorLib,
Economy-x-Talk now publishes the official final release of
ErrorLib 1.0. ErrorLib gives you control of execution errors.
With ErrorLib, you decide whether errors are reported and how
they are reported. Password protected stacks no longer hamper
bug reports from your clients and you will get all error
information Revolution can possibly provide.
With errorLib, you have a simple light-weight set of scripts
that you can include with your standalones and use in the IDE.
The execution error dialog will no longer lock up your IDE if
you use errorLib instead. You can easily parse error information
and choose whether to have the error displayed by the Revolution
IDE, by the built-in routines of errorLib, or in your own custom
error dialog. This library also provides error information if
your stack is protected by a password and includes a logging
feature that saves errors to a file.
ErrorLib works with Revolution 2.2 and later. This library is
shareware. Download ErrorLib from the Economy-x-Talk website at

Dear HyperCard users,
Economy-x-Talk has released another update of DIFfersifier.
DIFfersifier is a simple utility, which makes conversion of
HyperCard, MetaCard and Revolution stacks into a number of
text-based database formats as easy as possible. The DIF and
Merge file formats created by DIFfersifier can be imported by
most, if not all, well-known database applications. A
tab-delimited text format is also available, enhancing
flexibility for those who are creating their own database
software. DIFfersifier can also create HTML tables.
The conversion process only takes a few steps. After starting
DIFfersifier, a small window appears. Click the Select Stack
button and open a HyperCard, MetaCard or Revolution stack.
Choose a file format and a background or group and press enter.
After a few seconds, you are asked to give your new file a name
and save it in the appropriate folder.
Advantages of DIFfersifier are: convert HyperCard stacks on
systems that don't run HyperCard; no need to write your own
script for text export; field names are preserved if the DIF or
Merge formats are chosen; DIFfersifier takes care of return
characters in fields, making sure that the database of your
choice displays the data correctly.
We have now added drag and drop, which makes converting stacks
even easier than before. You can download this new version from
the Economy-x-Talk homepage at <http://economy-x-talk.com>.
Owners of a DIFfersifier 3 license are entitled to a free update
to DIFfersifier 3.1.2 and will also receive a free universal
update for intel Macs. We expect to release the universal
version for intel Macs in the second half of 2006.

Dear HyperCard users,
I would like to inform you about a new release of DIFfersifier,
which is available now. DIFfersifier is a simple utility, which
converts text data in HyperCard, MetaCard and Revolution stacks
to several other formats. The DIF and Merge file formats that
are created by DIFfersifier can be imported by most, if not all,
well-known database applications. A tab-delimited text format is
also available, enhancing flexibility for those who are creating
their own database software. DIFfersifier can also create HTML
tables.
DIFfersifier 3.1.0 allows for having multiple backgrounds with
equal names. Also, log files are numbered automatically. You can
find the new version at http://economy-x-talk.com. You don't
need to buy a new license key for DIFfersifier 3.1.0 if you
already have one for DIFfersifier 3.0 or later.

Welcome Jack!
Sounds like you've used HyperCard from its beginnings. I haven't
encountered the problem that you mentioned. HyperCard is fully capable
of operating in OS X's Classic mode. Perhaps re-install HC?
I think we all wish that HC would be compatible with OS X ...and be
upgraded to version 3.0, 4.0, 5.0+ ....and, oh well, Apple will come
around one of these days, they're just taking a bit longer than we

I just wanted to post a message to say hello to all the existing

I have been using HyperCard from its earliest days and consider
it to be the BEST application ever written for a computer.
As an Apple Addict I am supportive of the company, but have
to say that one of the few serious mistakes they have made
over the years is scrapping development of HC.
I can still run it in Classic mode on my present eMac under
OS 10.4.2, but really wish that it could run in OS X.
Locking the screen will toss any visual effects. And you have to watch it,
because locking can occur all the way back in the home stack, or in any
stack in use. You may have to trap and kill opencard, closecard,
openBackGround, etc., to make sure that nothing gets past the visual effect
handler you are working on. It is one of the only, but most insidious,
message passing labrinths in HC.

Your right, I've been looking on Ebay in that states here for that book.
So when when that card opens, nothing happens for 5 seconds, and then it
shoots over to the other card. OK. So the user reads something on the first
card for a while, and then finds himself somewhere else? OK.
I understand what the closecard handler does, but what does it do for your
stack?
Is this what you intended? The only reason I ask is to engage you in a
dialog, because fiddling with both your authoring concepts and the writing
of code itself are always fun, terrific learning exercises and keep people
like me engaged, so I don't have to concentrate on my real job.
Place a visual effects command BEFORE the go command. The effect is stored
internally until it is required, which is when a card transition is called
for. Did you know you can chain visual effects one after the other, up to
ten layers? Try it.

You need to know that the "opencard" message is sent whenever a new card
opens. It is sent automatically, as a system message. This message may be
"trapped" along the way, if you want to do something with it.
If you have written such an opencard handler, you may be generating spurious
messages that get out of control. Please post your handler, and we can
easily find the problem. Is it so that you have placed your opencard handler
in the card script?
For example, if your opencard handler says "go next card", you will do just
that whenever the card opens, and never see the card that you want to edit
the script of. Imagine if this line of code were in an opencard handler in
the stack script. The cards would advance continuously forever.
This is a basic issue with understanding message control, and all new users
go through it. But once you get the hang of it, which will take about five
minutes, you will be well on your way. This issue gives you power, it does
not confuse or take it away. You'll see.
You must get "The complete Hypercard Handbook" by Danny Goodman. You are
jumping right into the highest level of construction, and that is a good
thing, just what HC is meant to offer. You just need to understand that you
will trip up now and then. That is what we are here for.
Again. post this stuff also to the HC mail list:

Ok, I got the script thing worked out here. Now I have
placed the opencard script inside the first card. How
do edit that card's script without having it go to the
next card. Everytime I go to that card, it wants to
proceed to the next card (with the script I've added
to it). I guess how do I pause it or stop it so I can
edit the script on the first card.
Thanks

CantModify would be under Protect Stack, and you already looked at

So wait, it says it can't modify the script, then it opens a blank

Mark
