I had a problem making a slideshow DVD this morning.
I wanted the slideshow to be operated manually but somehow
I had music in the slideshow and couldn't figure out how to
get rid of it. I had options for time of display or set to music,
no manual option. I had three slideshows on the DVD, but it only
happened to one. So what I ended up with was no music on the menu
screen, and music in one slideshow. What did I do wrong?
Thanks

Thank you for the response. (Running in circles, squawking, one wing
down)
You mean NOW I have to learn iMovie at the same time I'm tackling
iDVD? AGGGHHHHHH, what's the world coming to?
However, I've skimmed the article, and printed it for "night
reading." It doesn't look too bad. Guess I'll have to get some of the
voice recording done and work from there!

That's how I read the manual. However, as I'm still building and have
not yet burned the DVD, I'm not "sure." I know that the directional
arrows on the preview control panel don't do it.

If we solve the problem, and I know how to do it in the future, I'll
learn another dozen packages to get there (G)

I've been dabbling with Aperture a bit here of late. I suppose once I
get this pair of projects done, I'll have to devote some time to it,
it'll give me an excuse to use the snot out of my new toy Kodak P712

You want to learn about using Bookmarks. In a nutshell, in iMovie,
you want to record your voice over first, then as you listen to the
audio, you add bookmarks at the appropriate places. When finished you
add your photos to those spots. For a great article on this, see
here...

Not that easy to do in iDVD except via the slideshow function. But
you could also create a mini monie in iMovie that is basically your
photos displayed for whatever time you think it appropriate. You can
add multiple "movies" to an iDVD project.

I think just hitting the "menu" button on the remote will bring you
back to the main menu like most DVDs.

See the above link. But basically you need to create a movie in
iMovie. It is not easily done the way you want from within iDVD.

I often do it the same way, especially since I don't really use
iPhoto much anyway, most of my photo library is in its own set of
folders.

Hello. I've just dived into iDVD, memorized the tutorial, etc, etc.
Got LOTS of questions on method and logic.
1. How does one show an image? As I read the material, it seems
clearly to indicate that I can call an image, but no matter how I
try, it wants to take over the background.
So I found a work around that created
2. I can have the image display if I call it a slideshow. Cool
enough, but I'm limited to the time values in the package. If I use
"manual" (at least on the computer) with a single image in the slide
show, I find no way to allow the end user to return to the prior menu.
What am I missing?
The next one:
3. In this case, I have a six page story that I've recorded a voice
over for. I'd like to have a slide show (for this one, at least)
display the pages as the voice over reaches each new one. This
apparently requires markers (?) in the audio. So far, I'm not having
much luck chasing down further knowledge on this one.
So, a quick summary.
* How do I show a straight image (e.g. a picture) from a menu button?
* If using a single image as a slide show, how do I created a manual
"return" (or exit) to the previous menu?
* What do I need to do to have the audio script trigger a slide show
to advance to the next slide?
* How can I create an "exit" button from any slide show to return to
the previous menu?
(standard data: 1.8 ghz Intel iMac, 1 gig RAM, about 1000 gig hard
drive space, superdrive, etc, etc.)
I find that I really don't like retrieving media from iTunes, iPhoto
and such. I tend to make a folder with the Production Pieces and
simply drag things over.
I'm very pleased to find this group. I've read manuals, startups and
helps for the past week along with LOTS of experimenting. I've either
worked out, or found "work arounds" for most of the issues I've
encountered, but am still a bit short on the handful mentioned in the
post.

Hello-
I captured my first movie using eyeTV, edited it in iMOVIE and then
shared with iDVD. This seemed to fine but when I clicked on the Burn
icon I got a warning message that something was wrong with the file did
I want to correct or burn anyway. Because I couldn't figure out a way
to see what was wrong I clicked burn anyway. It seemed to work fine
after that. Has anyone else had this happen and if so where do you
check for problems?
Thanks,
kris
I need to author DVDs with the following parameters, but I know CD terminology
so I'll use
that:
There will be 40 tracks, each with 99 indexes each.
In other words, when the user pops in the DVD, there will be 40 choices of "mini
movies" at
the first menu. But when the user is viewing any particular choice, she can go
backwards or
forwards up to 99 indexes (I guess these would be called "scenes"?) within.
First, what is the proper terminology?
Second, can iDVD do this or do I need to buy DVD Studio Pro?

Hi all! I'm new to the list but have been using iDVD for a year or more
now with no real problems to speak of.
However, I have been trying to burn a project (originally created in
Final Cut Pro, menus created in Photoshop but saved as jpegs, and
quicktime movies for the audio over those menus) and the thing keeps
quitting on me mid burn.
Step 1 & 2 take forever but seem to go fine, step 3 even works for a
short while but then it unexpectedly quits. I've checked the
console/library logs and see things like (forgive me, I'm not at my
actual computer at the moment) "AT1 Rage128" and "Kern Protection
error."
Any ideas about what might be the trouble here? What can I do to solve
this problem? I'm so beyond frustrated!
Thanks in advance!

Is it possible to export the iDVD opening templates into other
projects? That is, create a new iDVD project, customize the
template and use the customized template as part of an iMovie or
Final Cut Pro project?

I notice that iDVD 6 does seem to recognize a DUAL LAYER
superdrive - does that mean I can burn projects LARGER than 120 minutes?
What is the most minutes of DV footage anyone has seen
used in a project made with iDVD?
Thanks for your response!

I am having sound problems while capturing video with
Snapz. The problem sounds like someone bending or
wiggling an audio line which has a faulty ground.
Pops, clicks, and scratches every several seconds. Not
enough to obliterate the audio but certainly enough to
make listening an irritation! Post clean up will
probably be prohibitive. This is a recent development
and I am not sure whether the problem is on my side
with some recent software update conflict, or with the
donator side with some type of interference which has
recently been introduced. I'm hoping that someone
else who uses this utility has some ideas as to a
solution.

I just made a PAL 16:9 DVD using the iDVD6 Full Frames theme.
On a Panasonic DVD Player, a Panasonic DVD Recorder, the MAC DVD Player and
WinDVD on a PC, everything works OK.
However, using Windows Media Player, Cyberlink's PowerDVD and Sonic's Cine
Player on the PC, the highlighted areas on the Chapters menus were adrift. For
example, the highlighted squares for the last/next menu arrows were way over
to the right of the arrows themselves. Odd.

I have recently archived and re-installed my system
and am experiencing some growing pain irregularities
with iDVD 5.
I am using 10.3.9 Panther and that would have
installed iDVD4 during the re-install. I had since
moved to iDVD5 and I suspect the sometime during the
extended updating process,iDVD picked up a new trick.
It seems that somehow the themes which appear in the
"Old Themes" drop down menu, in the customize window
(probably left over from 3) have duplicated
themselves. I have 2 of almost every theme. (Theater,
Book, Picture in Picture, Western, Sport, Postcard,
Portfolio BW and Color, and Concrete.) Interesting
enough, there were several which were able to exercise
birth control and did not duplicate like the others.
I can see no difference between the first and the
second and cannot tell the original from the clone. I
have no idea why any of the themes would have
duplicated in the first place.
When I do a search for ".theme" or when I look in the
package contents of the application, I do not see
duplicates.
Anybody have any suggestions as to how to trim the
customize window down to having only one
representation of each theme?
When creating DVD's I am having difficulty with the audio. After all
the video is processed and just before the final step as the audio is
encoding I get the dreaded beachball (OS 10.4.7) and I remain in
limbo.
Its frustrating force quitting and losing all the changes and the
time that goes along with it. Any suggestions as to what I should be
looking for to avoid this glitch? Many thanks in advance.
--Tony--
When I tried to burn my most recent movie I found that
something had happened to my iDVD themes. I recently
did a reinstall of my OS, and something must have been
rewritten, damaged, or moved. The application only
finds the last template I used. All the others like
the stock ones which came at install are missing in
the customize window.
Does anyone have any ideas?
Where in the OS is the folder which contains the
various themes supposed to live? I can 't find it.
Hello....
Well, things have been pretty quiet round these
parts,
thought I'd check in with my problems, see if
anybody
has any suggestions.
I'm using a "Theme" called "Reveal", which
uses two
photos in the base and then has a strip of five
photos
it opens and closes as you look at the menu
theme.
Actually, I only use one in the base; it's
supposed to
have a overlap quality between the two photos
which
I really don't like. But only using one leaves a
sort of
bright spot, like part of the one photo has
faded,
which is sort of O.K., though I would like to
see what
it look like without it.
I find the computer interaction with the
program
gets sluggish after awhile, and sort of shuts
down
and won't really take commands. Though I must
admit, it's working pretty good just now.
So, what I want is a DVD with three menu
items,
a slidefilm I made(this seems to work well)
and two
sets of slides, that can either be run with
music or
shown manuely. My question is, can I add
text (captions) to the still slides that
will appear
with the DVD?
Thanks,
GREG

I'm not an authority on this, but I think there is only one missing piece
to your understanding. In the broadcast TV world, the beginning of a
program, that is, what I would think of as zero hours, zero minutes,
seconds and frames, is defined as one hour (01:00:00:00) on the time code.
I've been told that this was done to be able to queue in items before the
start of a show, such as commercials, promos, announcements, station
identification, etc., without needing negative timing numbers. That time
code convention has become more generalized than just broadcast TV, but it
doesn't show up everywhere. The inconsistency makes it even more
confusing.
So I would read your time code example as "one hour" which is really zero
hours, "zero minutes," "eleven seconds," and "twenty-four frames."
Basically, just as you predicted, except for the artificial hour figure.
It's kind of like daylight saving time...

New to the group. I have a question. I was reviewing an icreate
project regarding subtitles that I found intriguing. In it I
discovered I could import txt files with delimited text for my
subtitles. My question is this, in the format below the video file is
only 1 minute long but the format looks like it goes for an hour. The
format is below:
01:00:11:24
Can someone tell me what the format stands for? Is the 24 the frame?
According to this, the video file location for the would be 1 hour, no
minute, 11 seconds, at frame 24.
I've pasted the entire text file from the tutorial below.

$FontSize = 24
$Bold = FALSE

$FadeOut = 2 // In number of Frames

Hello,
If anyone can help me with these pretty basic
questions, it would be great.
I using a Mac G5. I'm in IDVD O5, I guess it
is.
I been using both Imovie and IDVD to create
slideshows and I'm slowly picking it up.
Alas, my IDVD program seems to be working
very sluggishly, not taking commands, just
bouncing
around when I try to use it.
I have about 4 slideshows in there
already, I
thought I would just chuck all my previous work
(it can be easily dublicated) but I can't
figure out
how to throw anything away ! How do you get
rid off old projects you don't want anymore?
Also... I am trying to create using the
"Theme"
called "Reveal", it's the one where you have a
center photo and Five that "reveal" themselves
on the side. I can't get it to work right.
When I put
the main photo on, it won't show the other
five "Drops" that are supposed to stylishly
reveal themseleves on the DVD's main
menu. The thing just seems to take the photo
to the "Drop" zone, and then won't show it.
Any ideas? thanks! .......Greg

The fast way is to use iPhoto go to "file" menu to export. Open Export window
That opens to export direct to QT. you can adjust your display size and for how
long to show each pic. Also if your pic's have music to them in iPhoto that can
be transfered also.
If you transfer from a DVD you have to decode before droping into QT

I've managed to put together some nice

Can these be transfered to Quicktime

Also - what brand is the set-top box? Sony's can be really picky
about burned disks.
And where did the movie come from? If its not a movie that came from
iMovie via DV import, you can get some funny things going in the
encoding that set-top boxes may not like.
It is unlikely that the there is a problem with the laptop or your
software. Its probably an unreasonably picky set-top box. People tend
to think that the DVD player must be "correct", since after all, it
is a DVD Player - what would be more authoritative about a DVD than a
machine with no other purpose than to play DVDs. But unfortunately,
their software is (particularly the more expensive ones) often not
very robustly implemented. If the disk plays in some other computer,
then that almost always means that you have a buggy set-top box on
your hands. Ironically, the crappy $30 players from Walmart will
usually play just about any disk, while the expensive ones have all
sorts of issues.
SR
does your set top player play DVD's burned on someone else's laptop,

have you tried playing your burned DVD's on someone else's set top

have you tried burning something else that is very short, just to test?

Try a different brand blank - Apple or Verbatim are pretty good for
compatibility.

I cant play my dvd on my set top dvd player. I am using maxwell dvd-r's and the
dvd player
is dvd-r compatible. The dvd plays on my powerbook dvd player. Also, when i
put ithe dvd
in my set top the menu is visible, but the second i press play the player stops

dvd.
Any help is greatly appreciated!
I'm relatively new to Mac computers. I have a G4 and use Final Cut
Pro. I have exported a FC file to QT and am having trouble writing the
file to DVD. I have not had this problem before but I'm getting
messages like "Error #1", "Error #34506" and I can't find any
reference in troubleshooting to error messages. The last message I got
was "Your Mac does not have a supported SuperDrive. Please note that
while you will be able to work with iDVD projects you will not be able
to burn a DVD disc". My computer didn't come with a SuperDrive. We
installed a "SuperDrive" about 2 yrs. ago and have not had any
problems using it with iDVD. Now, all of a sudden, I'm getting these
messages. Can anyone help me out?
