OK I put in a request with the Apple Discussion Moderators but then I
started to play around with the links and I think I figured out the
right links. I am at work right now, so I downloaded something (.sit
files) but being that I am on a Windows machine I can not check the
files right now.

Here are the links...

iDVD Companion direct download link I think is...

http://www.apple.com/applescript/archive/idvd/idvd_companion/iDVDCompanion3.app.\
sit

and the Sequential Movie Droplet (which I thought sounded interesting) is
here...

Oops, just discovered that the links provides are dead. D'oh!

I'll keep looking. I will check with the Apple Discussion moderators and see if
any of those Apple employees know where to find them.

Hello, I have lost access to iDVD Companion and need another copy if

someone could email it or better yet, upload it to the Files page of

the iDVD Yahoo group. See http://tech. groups.yahoo. com/group/ iDVD/files/

Prior to iLife '08, Apple used to provide access to their free

Applescript- created utility called iDVD Companion.

With iDVD Companion, users could finesse the final positions of menu

elements in iDVD-created DVD menus, such as button positions, arrow

positions, and other iDVD menu elements.

Apparently the newest edition of iDVD allows that kind of positioning,

which makes iDVD Companion obsolete--so Apple removed it from their

website.

I have not upgraded to iLife '08 because I like iMovie '06 and have

heard nothing good about iMovie '08--thus my continued use of iDVD '06

and the need for iDVD Companion.

Can anyone supply a copy?

Thanks.

Hi,

Derek, great response! I agree that computers seem to have less compatibility
problems
than DVD players; it's been my experience as well.

For our personal players, we've had both great results with Sony and +R and
Panasonic
with -R but, doesn' t that jib with their corporate preferences? Duh!
Sometimes they will
read the 'other' variety and sometimes they won't.

I expect that the cheaper players will play anything because, after all, they
have a more
focused job and no corporate strategy to try and rule the world.

Again, very good post. Thanks!

Don

I have an eleven minute 2gig movie that was taken with a Sony HD camera and
downloaded
in to iMovie HD. In iMovie it looks really good but when I send it to iDVD no
matter what
quality I select (best quality or best performance) iDVD insists in crunching
it to 500MB with
a poor quality result. I understand that iDVD will crunch large movies down to
around 4.2GB
for burning to a dvd but why should it feel necessary to crunch a movie of less
than 4,5GB?

Thanks for any help.

Cheers, Roger

Are you looking for a brand recommendation or just a format
recommendation? Not sure about brands, but I did find a post that
explains the compatibility.

http://www.cdrom-guide.com/forums/showthread.php?t=284126

From that post it looks like most players tend to like either the -R
or +R formats, but the -R has *slightly* more compatibility with most
players.

The dual-layer disks are becoming much more popular now. It used to
be that you could buy a stack of single-layer DVDs for a fairly low
price -- while the cost of dual-layer DVDs was shockingly high (e.g.
$4 per disk). I don't buy disks very often (I only use them
occasionally when I want to convert a home movie to something I can
give to relatives who aren't very computer savvy.) but when I do, I
generally just use the single-layer disks (I have still have lots of
them) for everything. When you tell iDVD to burn the disk, it will
prompt you to put the disk in the drive and then check the disk's
capacity. If the content will all fit then its happy. If it realizes
you have more content than the disk can hold you'll get a message.
Basically if my movie fits on the older & cheaper single-layer then
that's what I use. If it wont fit then I'll spring for the dual-layer
disk.

The price on dual-layers has come down. I think they're now around $2
per disk (e.g. a 25 stack of disks is probably around $50-60).

Regards,
Tim

I'm using iLife '06. Just finished editing a video for my wife's
classroom in iMovie. Turned out great. Exported to iDVD, selected a
theme, clicked burn.

When it was finished, I got a disk with audio on the menus, but no
audio in any of the actual footage.

I haven't yet had time to look at the iMovie to see if there's some
muted audio tracks. The odd thing is that while I was in iDVD, I
previewed a lot, so I would have caught a muted track.

Any ideas?

Ranger,

OK, here are a bunch of facts and example about Chapter markers. Kind
of long...

When you add chapters to your iMovie and then go to iDVD you should
get a main screen with "Play Movie" and "Scene Selection" buttons.
Obviously "Play Movie" starts your movie up. If you click on "Scene
Selection" you get a submenu or series of submenus of your chapters
you put in from iMovie.

Just like any commercial Hollywood movie, chapters/scenes are nothing
more than starting points (a jump in point if you will) where you can
pick a chapter/scene, start it playing but then it will continue to
play to the end of your movie. Some people mistakenly think it will
play just the scene then stop at the end of the scene and jump back
to the menu. Until it is pointed out to them, they do not remember
this doesn't work that way in a Hollywood movie either.

Any chapter markers you put in can be renamed either in iMovie or
iDVD. So in iMovie when you tell it to add a chapter marker you get,
for example, Chapter 6. If you want you can click on that chapter
name and when it highlights you can type in any name you want, e.g.
"The Beach". When you go to iDVD those names will be as you changed
them. But you can also click on the names in the iDVD menu and change
them there as well. Useful as sometimes titles you picked in iMovie
don't fit nicely in the theme you chose, so it is useful to be able
to tweak them in iDVD if needed. For example, you might find
"December 25, 2006" bumps into other scene names on a crowded menu
screen, so you can change it in iDVD to instead read "XMas 2006".

Further more, you can cut (or copy) and paste scenes from one menu
into other menus. So you can move chapter markers to the top level
(main menu) if you want. Keeping in mind that clicking on any of them
will start your movie from that point, but continue on until the end
of the movie. By the way, the "Play Movie" and "Scene Selection"
buttons can also be renamed if you like. An example where this all
ties together. Say you have a project that is 20 minutes long and you
have only two chapters (not counting the first default chapter at
0:00:00 that is created in all DVD projects). When you go into iDVD
you will get "Play" and "Scenes" then in the "Scenes" menu you have
three chapters (the first default one and your two added ones). To
simplify the project you might select your two added chapters and
paste them into the main menu. You can then select the "Scene
Selection" button and delete it (button and submenu go away). You can
then rename the "Play Movie" to, for example, "Whole Recital", then
one chapter "Starting on Piano" and the other "Starting at Chorus".
So now you have a simple single menu project with three buttons.
Whole Recital plays everything and the other two jump in a little
later but play to the end.

Going back to chapter markers, you can create many chapter markers (I
think 99 is the limit for a single movie) but you do not have to use
all of them or any in a scene selection menu if you do not want to,
but all of them will be in the movie so the viewer can jump forward
and backward to all chapter markers inserted even if you don't show
them in the menus. I mention this because you can use this to your
advantage to force iDVD to create extra scene selection pages. Most
Themes are set up to display 6 or so chapters per page. So if your
project has 15 chapters (including the first one at 0:00) when you go
to iDVD, the scene selection area will have three menus with 6, 6,
and 3 chapters. Now say you want to have four groups of chapters with
each group on its own menu and you don't need the first chapter in
the menu. So you want the remaining 14 chapters on 4 pages as
follows: 5, 2, 3, & 4. To force iMovie to give your four chapter
pages rather than 3, pad your project with extra chapters (put them
in places that are useful for jumping forward/backward with the
remote). At 6 chapters per page, you need 24 chapters. Therefore in
addition to the default first chapter, your 14 chapters, create 9
more in your project to total up to 24.

Now go to iDVD with this project. You will have 4 "Scene Selection"
sub pages. First step is to highlight and delete all the chapters you
don't want the viewer to see (as I said earlier, the chapter points
are still embedded in the movie, so when you remote forward and
backwards, it will jump through all 24 chapters, not just the ones in
the menus). Now simply cut and paste your chapters and group them
onto the pages so you have 5, 2, 3, & 4 per page like you wanted.

And finally, if your intention was to be able to play the whole
movie, then pick a location and play ONLY that location (rather than
continuing through the rest of the whole movie) the only way to do
that is to create separate mini-movies of just those locations. Then
simply drag and drop them into your iDVD project. You can have more
than one movie on an iDVD project. Just note that the total time of
your movies can not exceed the limit of iDVD for the project. In
other words, if your total movie is 30 minutes and each location is
10 minutes long, you would need 4 movies (the whole movie, then each
of the three location movies) and they would total 60 minutes, which
is OK. If on the other hand you have a 90 minute main movie and want
to add five 10-minute location sub movies, that totals 140 minutes,
which is too long for a single layer DVD so could only be created on
a dual layer DVD.

I hope that helps. I wasn't exactly sure what you were trying to do,
so I thought I would include ALL the possibilities.

Perhaps I am misunderstanding your goal, but this seems pretty much
like the basic default, in more recent versions of iMovie and iDVD.

In iMovie, after all you editing is complete, place chapter markers at
the beginning of Location 1, Location 2 and Location 3. If Location 1
is also the start of the movie, then it doesn't need a separate chapter
marker, since iDVD creates a beginning marker automatically. However,
I usually have opening credits and other things that I want to play
when the user picks "Play Movie," but I want to skip when the user
picks "Scene 1." Note that chapter markers are not tied to clips, so
if you do further editing after placing the chapter markers, they may
become misaligned from your original placement. Move them, or delete
and recreate them.

When you send your movie to iDVD, the chapter markers will become
submenu buttons, at least with most themes. You can edit the text in
the buttons, to change them from "Scene 1" to whatever text you like.

This seems to be what you are asking for. If you click on "Play Movie"
(you can also edit the text of that button), you will see the whole
movie. If you go to the submenu, and click on Location 2, you will see
the movie starting with the Location 2 chapter marker. The movie will
play until it reaches the end of the whole movie. The same for
Location 3 (and Location 1, if it is different than the start of the
movie).

What if I want "Play Movie" to play the entire movie, but I want to
click on Scene 2, and have it stop after Scene 2, and not play through
scenes 3, 4, 5, etc. to the end of the entire movie. This is not well
supported in the DVD format. The only way I know to do it in
iMovie/iDVD is to import each scene twice- once as part of the complete
movie, and once as a separate movie, which just happens to have the
same content as part of the main movie. This doubles the size of the
video on the DVD, but for some projects, it is worth doing.

If I have missed the point of what you are trying to do, please send
further clarification. It would help to know the versions of iMovie
and iDVD that you are using.

Hi-
I have music video shot in three different locations. I'd like to have
it all be one continuous movie from iMovie. However, I'd also like to
have my main menu buttons be something like: Play Movie; Location 1;
Location 2; Location 3; Slideshows and other stuff.

Can I do this? What I intuit I want to do is have each of the Location
beginnings marked as chapters (I have each song and some interspersed
interviews all marked at the moment). How do I make a submenu link to
a particular starting point (#1) and, #2, How do I connect the chapter
markers under the particular Location in which they were shot, rather
than numbered sequentially from 1 to the end of the movie?

I'm missing out on how to do that. Thanks for any help!
Cheers,
Ranger

Max time is 120 minutes for single layer (normal) DVDs and twice that
for Dual Layer blanks. Keep in mind this is an estimate and also you
have to include any menu items you add to iDVD in your total time. In
other words, if you add a three minute song to a menu in iDVD, then
your time left for your movie(s) is now about 117 minutes.

I burned a few things on DVD lately that were slightly over ( I think
it was 123 ) and when I put a DVD-DL in, it gave me a message saying
the movie would fit on a regular single-sided DVD, so I did that. I
thought something must have changed in the latest version of iLife. I
haven't pushed the limit in a while. I didn't pay a lot of attention
at the time, but now I'm coming up on another one that might be
slightly over, so suddenly its a topic of great interest. I just hate
it when you stack everything up perfectly, and its 122 minutes . . .

I would love to see an increase here -

But I think the max. is still 120 mins.

Also - That is a GREAT page on iDVD 6 - Thanks for the link!

I noticed that the maximum movie time has gone up in iDVD - anyone
know what the max for DVD and DVD-DL is now?

In looking for the answer, I ran across this really nice overview of
iDVD:

and added a link to it on the group pages.

Hi,

I just joined this group and have already gotten some questions
answered just by looking through the archives.

I wanted to change the background music of an iDVD (6.0) theme, as
I've done many times. In the past I've pulled a song out of iTunes.
This time, I created a complilation in Soundtrack (bundled with Final
Cut). Soundtrack exports the mixed track as an .aiff. This is the
same format that iTunes uses when it rips a track from a CD.

When I tried to pull my exported Soundtrack complilation into my iDVD
project, the program would crash.

Anyone know of a fix or at least a reason why this happens?

Thanks,

JaMeS

I still never saw any yellow error marker or error indicator of any
sort. However, after going through every piece of the project several
times (bemoaning the lack of object names, particularly for music), I
found a BLANK audio file in the audio box of a single page "slide"
show. I don't recall that I put it there (but with incipient
senility, you can never know) [WHY would I put a blank audio file in
there?]

In any event, removed that small bit of fluff and the thing is
processing for a burn right now.

Ok, wading ever further into the morass.

Got this project to the point to where I want to burn a test copy.
When I select "Burn DVD" command, I get a dialog box saying "There
are errors duing the validation (etc)". I go to the DVD map, which
the docs indicate SHOULD have some kind of yellow marker at the point
where it thinks there's an error.

No yellow marker anywhere. I've gone through manually to see if any
links or source material is misnamed or out of place. Nothing that I
can find.

If I do the Project > Project Info, I get all teh standard lists, but
no error indicator. I do note that there is a audio file that is
listed as "0" status. (i.e. the file is not found). However, I've
checked every link that used audio files, to include the backgrounds,
and can't find this magically missing file.

I have one Main menu page, four "sub" menu pages, 15 pages in Slide
Show mode and 1 page that's a movie.

I have literally gone through EVERY page, removed any audio that was
there and replaced it with the "proper" audio. I'm still hung up with
the Project errors.

(standard data array), Intel iMac, 1 gig RAM, 900 gig drive space, OS
10.4/Mactel, iDVD v 6.0.2

Any suggestions or paths that might help me out>?

I just burned a project which appeared to be OK when
tested in the preview mode in iDVD, but upon
completion it had a problem with the little indicator
lights which help with the selection in the chapter
selection.

The dots worked for the opening screen where you could
choose between playing the movie, selecting the
chapters, and choosing extra features. Each would show
the dot you were preparing to select correctly.

However when you chose the chapters, the new window
presented the list of chapters without any default dot
location. Clicking the DVD remote nivigation arrows
the appropriate number of times would "blindly" change
chapters, but the only indicator which ever "Lighted"
was the back arrow, and since there were six chapters,
that only happened every seven clicks. I did not
notice that the dots were probably not lighting in the
preview mode because I used my mouse and when I
hovered over and clicked on each chapter, that was
where we went. Unfortunately, the DVD does not have a
mouse so you can't tell where you are for the
selection.

Anybody have the answer as to what went wrong and how
to remedy it?

I had a problem making a slideshow DVD this morning.
I wanted the slideshow to be operated manually but somehow
I had music in the slideshow and couldn't figure out how to
get rid of it. I had options for time of display or set to music,
no manual option. I had three slideshows on the DVD, but it only
happened to one. So what I ended up with was no music on the menu
screen, and music in one slideshow. What did I do wrong?

Thanks
Nick
