Sorry to hear about the accident, hope you are OK.
The more I use the Web-based version of iGeocacher, the more excited I
get about the native app. I never thought I could go truly paperless,
but now, I never print out a cache sheet unless it has some
complicated puzzle I have to decypher.
I can't speak for anyone else, but I'm glad to hear you're taking the
extra time to work on the app. I can wait a month or so, especially
since the Web-based app works so well.
Thanks for all of your effort.

Sorry I've been so silent. I was in a car accident and that put me
behind a bit in my development.
I'm making excellent progress in mastering the essentials I need to
know in learning Objective-C and I'm starting to feel much more at
home in the iPhone development environment. The more I get into it,
the more I realize that Apple has done a truly outstanding job of
providing tools and example code for us to "steal" from. That has been
huge. I was able to find several major pieces in the examples that I
could just adapt rather than having to write them from scratch. Most
notably the network access and download of XML data, subsequent
parsing and then storage to the on-board SQLite database used code
from two of the sample apps that did most of what I needed done.
Just today I've achieved a major milestone. I now have the code
working that will download the cache data to the local iPhone SQLite
db. I'm now going to turn my attention to the user interface.
Hopefully I'll have some screen shots up here shortly to get some
feedback on what that should look like.
My goal is to have a working native app that relicates most of the
existing web application's functionality by the end of the month.
There were so many changes coming out of Apple late in the game that I
decided not to try and have a half-baked app ready for the 7/11
rollout. Instead, I'll develop on the soon to be released version 2.0
platform instead of the late betas. The other reason for this is that
the only test phone I have is my main phone and I just depend on it
too much to risk it on beta software. I've been doing my development
in the excellent simulator that comes with the tools. It is so
faithful to the real phone in function that I'm very confident of the
result.
With any luck, I should be able to get a submission to Apple that
would make it available in August for purchase through the App store.
That's the new for now. I'm pretty excited. The native app will also
open up the world of paperless caching for the iPod Touch folks and
they'll be first class citizens as they have the same local DB and
native application capabilities.
Oh yes, what about the new GPS. The good news is that I've scoped out
the location API's and they will be easy to use. The bad news is that
I'll have to figure out my purchasing strategy for one of the new ones
before I'll have a test platform. It's a bit harder to simulate that
in the simulator reliably. But I definitely will incorporate it into
the app. I'm curious to see if the GPSR sensitivity is representative
of the new generation gear. If not then some folks will probably still
prefer their separate GPSR's. But the convenience of being able to
just "point and go" withe the data from the caches will be very
attractive. No more GPS dowloads. Just load up your GPX's and hit the
road.
I'm very excited about this app. I hope you will be too and that
you'll help me make it even better as you discover new ideas in using
it just as so many have with the web app.

You will be able to link to the built in Google maps, of course but
that will require web connectivity. Not much I can do about that. I'm
noodling around the options for storing map content but that is
problematic on a number of fronts. It takes up a lot of storage to
have a general map database when only a few maps are of interest in
any one session. Otherwise, you'd have to have some system whereby you
prestaged small map images for the caches of interest and dowloaded
them as well. That is probably doable. The hard part is what kind of
tool do you have a user use to preselect his map info from some
source. I'm continuing to pursue the Google static map API. That looks
promising but they have some usage restrictions on it that might be
problematic unless I cut some kind of commercial use deal with them
and that would likely drive the price of the app higher.
For the moment, I'm focusing on getting the cache info and log
information easily available offline. That seems to be the main
priority of most users. Solving the offline map issue is going to take
some thought and experimentation. The good news is that the native app
is coming along nicely. I just got the initial xml data download
working and storing to the local iPhone SQLite DB today. That was a
major milestone.

There are methods in the API to write to local files but it is apparent
that this is discouraged. They don't provide a hint as to the internal
file structure. You can always store BLOBS in the SQL Lite DB. It
appears that is what they want you to prefer in terms of a persistence
layer.

Hi Steve. Well, I was in a car wreck and that has set me back a bit.
I've got the tooling on my MacBook and I'm studying like crazy to master
the new Dev kit. Needless to say the inclusion of the GPS in the new
phone has really caused me to rethink some ideas. Learning Objective C
and Mac OS programming has been challenging but overall I think that
Apple has really done a fantastic job with the tooling and the SDK.
There is just SO much capability that it is hard to know where to insert
my shovel in terms of learning.
One area that I haven't firmed up quite yet is how to best get the data
from the GPX files onto the phone. My original plan is (and still is) to
download the XML data from the present server but then store it on the
local SQLLite DB so that it will be available off-line. That still
requires a server setup. No big deal but I'm also going to see if the
API has any "hooks" that I could use that would allow a user to just
e-mail their GPX files to an account on their phone and get the file
that way. Once the data is on the phone displaying it in the standard
table view drill down paradigm that Apple likes shouldn't be too hard.
I decided to just wait until the official 2.0 software release and spend
my time getting ready. They've had so many beta releases (8 is just out
now) that I'd have spent more time keeping the tools in synch. I think
after the GA release things will settle down. With any luck I may have
my first version out by the end of July. Also, since my own iPhone will
be my test bed and I depend upon it, I kind of wanted to wait until the
official 2.0 software was out and upgraded the "normal" iTunes way so
that I didn't lose any of my info. Stay tuned. I've been busy and not
attending my email that well but the game is still on.
-dB
Agreed. Although I'll be likely updating my iPhone, I don't think it
will be replacing my dedicated GPS. Perhaps sometime in the future,
but we don't know much about the accuracy of the new iPhone GPS, if
Apple will allow applications to be distributed that use the GPS to
route to a waypoint, etc.
What I'd really like from an application is a local version of what is
offered today with the webapp. Let me load, view, search a GPX file
and perhaps record notes and mark caches as found. When I had my Palm
Pilot I had a program just like this.
Some additional cool features to this would be integration with the
google maps application, provide links to take me to the GC.com
webpage, and it would be nice if somehow I could read the gpx file
from email and move it right to this new program directly without syncing.
Does anybody with SDK knowledge know if there is a file structure
supported for use by applications? Can applications use a separate
dynamic data file like a GPX file? How is the file installed (not
through the app store, obviously)?
Thanks,
Tony
Hi all---boy this group has been very silent lately!
I was on vacation last week, and used the iGeoCacher capability to
mail gpx files to myself extensively---it was a perfect paperless solution
to a long list of caches I was chasing whie we were out.
Reports show that the new iphone will be coming with a gps, but don't
see any indication that the paperless logging capabilities of
iGeoCacher will be any less necessary.
Anything new to look forward to in the iphone software
world--especially for those of us who are not planning on running out
to purchase a new phone?
Steve
Apologies for the late reply and for the confusion. The feature
request was for the forthcoming native iPhone application rather than
the existing web based version.

If you hit the letter again, it will zoom and then the letter turns
green in color and the next time you hit the letter it goes to the built
in map app. So I'm not sure what more could be added. It seems like that
should give you all the zoom you need or else I'm not getting what you mean.

Can I make a small feature request please? In addition to the group
maps would it be possible to have the option of including a map of
area around the individual caches as well.
Best wishes,

Just to let folks know, I got my MacBook this weekend and am finally
getting my ducks in a row to start work on the native app. I'm really
looking forward to being able to keep the info in the local SQL
storage featured in the new iPhone/iPod Touch OS. I think I've got
some good ideas on how to make even some of the Google mapping work
when offline. Naturally, the built in mapping won't work unless you
have connectivity but I'm thinking that I should be able to at least
download and store the "group maps" for offline viewing as images.

It is remotely possible that something in the GPX file is causing
this. I'd need you to send me your culprit GPX file so I can recreate
the problem.

Ah. That's good to know. I've modified the gpx upload accordingly and
it now seems to work with these route queries. Good sleuthing on your
part. All I had to do was search and replace Gpx with gpx. I wonder
why they did that or if it's just a bug in their route generation code.

Don,
First, thanks for the sort by nearest "centering" update. Makes the
app so much more useful for me. I have some more improvement ideas if
you'd like them.
Question about the display formatting as shown on your homepage. When
I'm loading a GPX file, at first my display looks like your homepage.
However, as the loading progresses, the font of the cache title keeps
getting larger, in like 3 steps, such that it never fits on screen
(the center link and checkbox always appear to the right), and I have
to scroll to the right to see them. I thought that it perhaps was my
GPX file, but I think it used to do the same with your demo@...
file (can't verify since it looks like you took that down).
Thanks,
Tony
Turns out the first letter of the <gpx> tags are capitalized in the
second and last lines of the file. Change those and you're in business.
It's detailed in this discussion on the Groundspeak forums.

I hope my post here didn't cause you too much worry. I never thought
it was a particular problem with iGeocacher since the files worked

took someone with the proper software to figure it out.

The upload utility is designed to allow multiple GPX/LOC files to be
uploaded to the same group so unless you check the "clear group before
upload" checkbox it will ADD caches to what is already there in the
group you've selected. I'm not using any "key" field by design to
allow maximum flexibility in mixing and matching caches from different
sources so if you have a caches that is listed in two different files
and you upload them, you'll get a duplicate. Or if you upload the same
file several times, you'll just be aggregating caches unless you check
the "clear group before upload" checkbox. Give that a try and see if
that doesn't fix things.

great application with much, much promise! Thanks for your work on
this and I look forward to future developments. I was very glad to
send along the $7.99 to support this effort.
Okay....here's the glitch.
Uploaded a GPX file and then went to web page via Iphone and things
worked great.
One hitch: three copies of each cache and within each cache
description three copies of paragraphs. I'll send you the GPX file in
separate message.
Again...worth the price of admission to see your exciting work on this!
WISH LIST
* clues to show?
* some interaction with the Google Map? i.e. being able to zoom in?
Thanks again.
If you'll forward me any GPX file that you are having problems with I'll
be glad to troubleshoot it. XML parsing can be tricky and it may be
something in the file that I'm not accounting for that I need to.

All of a sudden, I am having a problem uploading two gpx files based
on the "caches along a route" to my iPhone. They worked fine last
week, but now I keep getting errors when I try to upload them.
As a side note, the files also won't open in my Garmin software. But
GSAK and Maccache opened them with no problems.
I've had go back and fish my old gpx files out of the trash so at
least have something for the weekend.
Anyone else having this problem?

So, rumors have been swirling about the new 3G iPhone that will likely
show up in the next few months. Here's a recent iPhone rumor on
today's Engadget that claims a built in GPS.
http://www.engadget.com/2008/04/25/the-second-gen-iphone-3g-gps-only-slightly-th\
icker/
Seems like a no-brainer idea to me to include GPS, but this is still
just rumor at this point. Support for any internal GPS would have be
available through the SDK. We definitely have the makings of a real
sweet all-in-one unit!
In the meantime, the iGeocacher web-app is a great stop gap, though I
really want to be able to re-sort by distance. :-)

you watch, USGlobalSat or someone else will build some kind of real
GPS that will work with an iPhone. Too big a market out there to
ignore.

Good morning!
I too had high hopes to use a BT GPSr with the iPhone--It worked well
with my old Nokia.
However, I understand from Don that Apple does not plan to support BT
GPSr's.
Maybe wifi.
I loved my Nokia but it died, and I needed a phone. At least with the
iGeoCacher
app I have been able to stop carrying around printouts of all my cache
notes.
I'll be in a real quandary if the new iphone comes with a real GPS
incorporated into it!

I have been using GeoNiche with a BT GPSr on a Treo 700P. Hope to switch to
iPhone when
the new version comes out this summer. But I will do so only if there are some
GPS apps
available. I have donated to the new iPhone software effort. Hope to learn
much in this
group and I hope the iPhone eventually turns into a great geocache/GPS device --
like my
Treo has been. Thanks for setting it up.
No sweat.
A Yahoo group offers more options without stepping on any toes.
Cheers--

Thanks Steve! I really appreciate you setting this up. With the growing number
of geocachers
that use the iPhone/iPod Touch and the iGeocacher software, it will be good to
have a place
where we can swap ideas and experiences in using the iPhone/Touch for
geocaching. Most of
the really good ideas that are currently in the software have come from user
feedback. I think
this group will foster further synergy in ideas for improving the software's
utility for us all.

Hello---I set up this Yahoo Group to facilitate free exchange of user
hints and suggestions for program enhancements of the iGeoCacher app.
I expect users to be positive and civil even if they disagree on
topics making moderation unnecessary.
Enjoy!
