Greetings from the GeeThree Slick Team,

Yes, we're still around and continue to support our plug-ins for iMovie HD 6.
We've just released a few updates for the plug-ins that previously used Flash
and stopped working when Apple remove support for Flash in QuickTime. These
updates also work with Snow Leopard.

We've rewritten these plug-ins using different animation techniques available in
Mac OS X 10.4 and later. The animated WildFX titles (vol. 5, 7 & 8), animated
backgrounds (Ani-mattes in vol. 8), Object Wipes (vol.9) and transitions in vol.
10 all now work.

Here are some demo reels:
         http://tinyurl.com/wildfx5
         http://tinyurl.com/wildfx7
         http://tinyurl.com/animattes

To get the updates, please complete this form and we'll get back to you shortly.
     http://www.geethree.com/downloads/slickHD6update.html

Thanks for your continued support over all of the years. And if you have moved
up to Final Cut Express or Final Cut Pro, check out our new plug-ins that bring
your favorite Slick transitions, effects, titles and generators to Final Cut.

Happy Movie-making!

Hi,

First a big thanks for helping me get my iMovie project open last week. The
"Open Packages" and "trashing the preferences" were both helpful, as were
several other suggestions.

Now for my "new" problem, which I now realize has happened before. I've sent my
movie project over to iDVD (version 7.0.4) and am just about done with the
details. Unfortunately I can't remember exactly what I was doing or the
verbiage, but a window popped open and said that iDVD needed to perform some
operation on the project and that after the operation is done I need to check my
chapter/scene markers. Sure enough, every scene now takes me to the very same
spot in the movie. I've lost all 20 chapters. (I now remember that this has
happened before, but earlier I didn't read the small print and never noticed I
had a problem until the DVD was burned.)

Do I need to start over in iDVD when this happens? If not, how do I recapture my
20 chapter points? (I'm on an iMac running Tiger.)

Thanks in advance for your help.

Derek, I will try some of these options. So far the checking and unchecking in
Preferences has yielded nothing. Thanks for the pocket change shareware
suggestions; I might just spill that much. It's these 30 dollar gashes that get
me.

Re this:

...and the wanting borders and such,

I have these tiny videos and I think they look wretched when enlarged. Youtube
seems to want to keep their minimum video size pretty big (lots bigger than
176x144 anyway) but I want mine to show in their original dimensions, even if
borders make the file size bigger. Borders are the only way I can think of to
solve that issue on youtube.

Cheers,
Rocky

I think we have a few different overlapping issues here. One is, can
you (anyone) import video into iMovie 6, and maintain the original
size, with no scaling? I'm not sure. Can you tell whether the video
is being resampled and converted to bring it into iMovie 6? Perhaps it
is just filling the window like it would for any other video.

There are a couple of things you could look at. In the
Preferences>General tab, there is a checkbox for "Automatically resize
window to fit project". I'm guessing that this just changes what you
see as you are editing, but it might have some effect on your goal.

In Preferences>Import, there is a checkbox for "Automatic DV
Pillarboxing and Letterboxing". Your video probably isn't in the DV
standard, but perhaps that checkbox might have an effect.

If you can import your video into iMovie 6 without it scaling and
resampling, then I expect that you can export it at the same size using
Share to QuickTime, and then adjusting the Expert Settings.

As far as sending the video to YouTube, I'm not sure what you mean by
keeping the videos small. YouTube does its own processing of the video
that you upload, and displays it in a standard size window. I don't
remember seeing videos on YouTube that look smaller than normal. If
you have some examples, please post a link. Is small file size part of
the issue?

I've had the best luck with video quality on YouTube by uploading the
best quality MP4 QuickTime that I can produce with iMovie. The files
are large, but after YouTube transforms the uploaded video, the quality
is great.

If you create large black borders on your video, the file size will be
larger. All the black pixels take up just as much file space as other
pixels. Your videos will no longer be 176x144. They will be that plus
the width of your borders. None of that may matter to you. I think a
video with black borders will display on YouTube with black borders,
although their video processing might remove the borders.

You can add borders in QuickTime Pro by creating a mask in a graphics
program, and combining it with your video. Instructions are at the
link below. Read the comments for additional links and options.

<http://www.oreillynet.com/mac/blog/2006/05/the_mask_of_quicktime.html>

"Minify" ($2.50) from <http://imovieplugins.com/index.html> is supposed
to do what you want.

The shareware/free demo QuickTime Effects 1.4.1 seems to be able to do
what you need. Additional options are discussed in the Similar
Software section.

<http://mac.rbytes.net/cat/mac/video/quicktime-effects/>

The $2 sharware Aspect Ratio 2.0 also might do it. It's an iMovie
Plugin.

<http://mac.rbytes.net/cat/mac/video/aspect-ratio/>

Good luck,

Derek

I did something similar without buying QTPro (no budget). Did a "share" and used
"expert settings". It seems to lose some image quality. And still would love
to have it in a "normal sized border of vast blackness. Thanks.

Depending on your editing needs the Snapz output may or may not be
adequate. Since it is doing what is essentially a screen capture you are
going to be limited in terms of quality compared to the original DVD.

bucks. I'd heard of it, but hadn't really looked into it. After having checked

But I guess I'll start with the Handbrake route (the price is right!) and see
how far I get.

Thanks again to you both.

Actually, it is probably detailed as much as it could be in the archives
of this list. Here's a synopsis:

DVD's usually have chapters, you should put the DVD in a regular DVD
player and, after finding the bits you want, note what chapters they are in.

Open a DVD in HandBrake and then select the VIDEO_TS and click the Open
button and handbrake will scan the contents of the VIDEO_TS folder and
will show you the number of chapters available. Use the starting and
ending chapter selector to just rip the ones you want. Store the ripped
chapters as .mp4 files.

Import the .mp4 files into iMovie and trim/edit/combine to your heart's
content.

So, as long as you have HandBrake, I'd lower the difficulty rating to a 2 :)

By the way, unless you made the DVD *any* use, fair or otherwise,
contravenes the DMCA. Buying the DVD doesn't give you the right to copy
it or extract any content out of it. All you can do is play it until it
dies and then go buy another one. Thank your Congressman for that bit of
sucking up to the recording industry.

I'm thinking it depends whether or not the material is truly copy protected.
I'll have to say I don't know and only answered since I was in the thread. I've
normally only ripped the dvd's provided by professional videographers from
events and such. I doubt those are burned with protected software. I wouldn't
hold my breath being protected under fair use either without consulting an
attorney either on any video you or your client don't hold all the rights to.
For legitimate use such as a college lit class or something you could probably
get permission.

As for how smart...lol...well somewhere in the middle but it's going to be about
the software not how smart you are. If I couldn't do it in Mac I'd try it in a
linux virtual machine. I don't know the status today but that was one of the
things the music and movie industry held against linux was they didn't want to
comply with the standards...where that all came out I dunno....and remember that
was just to make a copy...not dissect it

This sort of brings up a topic I was going to address eventually anyway, but
here goes:

I want to do something that may be technically illegal but seems like it should
be protected under "fair use." I want to select short portions of copy-protected
movies--a minute here, a couple of minutes there--extract them and use them in
lectures with Keynote or Powerpoint.

I suppose it would require some combination of Handbrake, Streamclip, and iMovie
(or FCE, which I don't have).

On a scale of 1 (never touched a computer) to 10 (can hack into the CIA), I'm
probably around a 3.5, maybe 4.

This process must be detailed in a file (or book) somewhere, right? Any help?

Hi Guys,

My little homemade music video passed One Million yesterday on
Youtube...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yOaoUx0Mc0Q

I've been watching it grow and I thought it would be so cool if it
could reach that milestone. Now that it did I guess I'll have to

I've been going through some tutorials (MacVideoPro subscription) on
the new iMovie and its got some nice features that I am learning about.

I plan to start using Green Screen.. I bought a background and some
lights.

Just to learn the procedure in the software, I did a real quick one
with just my webcam and didn't even setup the lights, but I was
surprised that it worked pretty well. My next one I hope to really
improve with HD camera and lights..

Frank,
There are a number of programs that include EQ or hum removal
algorithms, including most any basic audio editor. You can even use a
simple high-pass EQ filter to greatly reduce the hum. If you can
manually 'sweep' the frequency up and down, you can hear the filter's
effect on both wanted and unwanted audio.

I think it should be noted that, depending on method used, *complete*
removal of hum may leave sonic artifacts. IOW, the medicine can be
worse than the ailment. Sometimes it is a better goal to *reduce* hum
only to the point where it no longer draws attention to itself.

I hope you mean "hum" and not it's evil stepbrother "buzz"!!

Hum is relatively simple to clean up, since it is a single frequency
(60Hz in North America, 50Hz in Europe). "Buzz", on the other hand is
hum *plus* a series of related frequencies spanning a very wide
frequency range, and mixed in with desired audio frequencies. As such,
buzz is a much tougher nut to crack.

With iMovie 6, there is a fairly good chance you can rescue the pieces
that made up your movie, and some chance of restoring everything in the
final form that you had it before the problem appeared.

Control-click (right click) on the iMovie project file (package), and
choose Show Package Contents. In the media folder will be all of your
clips and transitions. From this, you could rebuild most of what you
had, in a new project.

But there may be an easier way. In the Shared Movie folder, you will
see a GarageBand folder and an iDVD folder. Each of these contains a
.mov file for your project. These are small files which reference the
media folder. They are not self-contained movies. None-the-less, they
can often get you access to your complete, edited movie.

I haven't found any difference between the .mov files in the two
different folders. Pick one, and copy it into the same directory with
your iMovie project file/package. Next, double-click on this .mov
file. If all goes well, this will open your project in QuickTime, and
everything will be just as you left it. If so, save this movie under a
new name, at full quality. (You may need QuickTime Pro to do this.
I've never worked without it, so I am not sure). Then import this
movie into a new iMovie project.

This exported movie will have all the clips, transitions and edits.
You won't be able to modify and update the transitions or restore
deleted sections of the clips, because all of the pointers and hidden
background stuff from the original iMovie project isn't transferred
over by this method. Rather, it is equivalent to exporting a project
from iMovie either to tape or to QuickTime, and then re-importing that
result into a new project.

If you need to restore a complete clip or two to this new iMovie
project, you can go back to the Media folder of the original project,
and pull out whatever clips that you wish. Import them into the new
project, and edit as desired.

This method doesn't always work, but in my experience, it is the
quickest way to get back in business for most projects that get
corrupted.

It could be the preference files from iMovie are corrupted.   Will iMovie HD quit if you start it by itself and not by double cliking your project.  If the answer is no, then your project is highly likely okay.

You can try two things.

1.)  Set up another user account and then try to open iMovie.  If that works, go to your original account and look under Library/Preferences/ for something like "com.apple.iMovie.plist",  then trash those files, restart and then try opening the computer.  If it did not work under another user account, then

2.)  Try reinstalling iMovie HD - this may fix whatever corruption went it.

It is also helpful to boot from the install DVD and use Disk Utility to verify and repair your preferences.

I don't think your work is lost at all so don't despair.  It's just a matter of getting iMovie working again.

Jay

You might try doing a "safe boot". It will clear caches and do other maintenance not typically performed by a normal restart (you'll notice that the Mac will take longer to come up during a safe boot). Follow the safe boot instructions from Apple:

Safe boot also blocks non-critical processes from starting, so be sure to try opening the project before restarting again - keeping other processes from running might enable the project to open. After restarting again normally, everything will start up as before.

Good luck!

Well I don't understand it, but any claim to fame from imovie 08 or 09 to open
an imovie 06 HD has just been unsuccessful. I see 2 possible saves here for you
though. You might be able to right click the project and open package and
manually pull out the parts to redo in a new project hopefully retaining some of
your editing, or if you have or know someone with final cut express it truly can
open an 06 project.

I have been using iMovie HD version 6.0.3 for several years.
My iMac is OS 10.4.11.

I downloaded a movie from my videocam 2 weeks ago and have spent hours editing
it.

Tonight I tried to open the project and no matter how many ways I tried, iMovie
would start to open and then quit. No warnings, no messages, just went off.

I tried opening other projects with no problem. (I've also restarted the

Thank you everyone for your input.

I ended up cuttin gthe long video into two 55 minute videos and they burnt well using the old method.
Normally I just open up iDVD and drag the video.mov file into the iDVD and it works perfectly.

I will keep playing and see if I can narrow it down.
