Hi Lizzie!

I’m Andie, also from the Philippines. My internship is going well, and I’ve been keeping busy. I’m sorry I can’t help you with how to get instructions for your program. My host org has already outlined my program. It’s proving to be a very heavy workload.

I’m also curious about your internship. How come your internship started quite late? I also started my internship last September. Is your host org sponsoring your stay in Cambodia during your internship? It’s good that you’re able to go around the city to check out the sites. We encourage you to share your experiences with us and join in our discussions.

I hope you learn much during your internship. But don’t forget to have fun. Take Care!

Sincerely,

Andie Manahan

hi lizzie,
i'm daryl from the philippines. i'm an intern at the foundation for media
alternatives. you assumed the internship rather late. i started last
september. i don't understand... your an intern from east timor and you
got transfered to cambodia open forum? is that how it was? if that's the
case, i suggest you start with learning everything about your host
organization for you to be able to easily adjust to the new environment. i
had a hard time too when i was just starting. there seems to be nothing to
do in my host organization so i just looked for something to do. i
deliberately asked them if there's anything i could do and luckily they
assigned me some conferences and workshops that we are hosting. so there.
i hope that helps. i suggest that you enjoy the internship and just gather
and gather all the knowledge and experience that you can get.

in firendship,
yayil <-- that's my nickname =)

Dear GKP fellow friends,

You are requested to join GKP Youth Fellowship Program project page
(www.projects.takingitglobal.org/gkp-yfp) under Taking IT Global (TIG).
Once you get its membership you will be able to post your personal
information and activities report. Moreover you will be able to invite
your friends to see our activities at GKP-YFP.
This project page might be the common platform for all us to know each
other and to share our experiences during our internship program.

The membership process is very simple-

1. You can just response the membership request, which has been sent to
you from TIG or you can do it by visiting the website
(www.projects.takingitglobal.org/gkp-yfp).
2. In that webpage you will find an option to join the project team.
Clicking that option you will find two options: Sign Up and Sign In.
3. If you are already a member of TIG then just clicks on Sign In as a
TakingITGlobal member option. Or
4. You have to complete your TIG membership first, by clicking on Sing
Up button.
5. After completing the TIG membership you will be added to the GKP-YFP
project team automatically.
6. That’s all.

But please note that, as a GKP Youth fellow you have the right to be a
leader of this project. So, I request you to complete the membership
with all necessary information and please mention that you are a GKP
Youth Fellow. As a team leader will be able to modify this webpage. And
please don’t check the leadership option when you invite your friends
(except GKP Youth Fellow) in this project.

I hope to see all of you in this project page soon.

Thanking you all.

hi guys! i apologize if i wasn't able to actively participate in our
little 'sharing' session. i've been busy because we have another
conference cum workshop on the way. feel free to read our invitation at
the bottom. ;)

edna: it's cool that you are already adjusting to your new environment.
please do tell more. i'm already a month & a half in my host organization.
the first few weeks were a little weird because i was still adjusting but
eventually everything turned super great and i'm now truly enjoying the
learning and the company of my colleagues.

andie: we have a training on open source, maybe your host org would be
interested in it. it would also be a great venue if they chose you to be
the representative and we could meet in person.

tomal: i've already joined the project in TIG but i must admit that i'm
new and i really do need help and assistance with all the workings of TIG
so i can get familiarized with everything.

hope to be hearing from all of you soon!

in friendship,
daryl

Technology (VCTIIT-DOST)
College of Science, UP Diliman Campus, Quezon City
========================================

It is becoming increasingly clear that FREE/OPEN SOURCE SOFTWARE (FOSS) is
becoming a viable alternative for peoples of the world who seek to break
free from the constrictive parameters of proprietary software. Aside from
unquestioned technical advantages of FOSS, it is also fast becoming a
political imperative for NGO workers, development activists, social
movements, and even policymakers especially in countries of the so-called
Global South. As a technical and political option, there is a need for
more learning sessions to popularize the FOSS alternative more widely,
particularly for users within the broad development community in the
Philippines.

The Foundation for Media Alternatives, together with FOSS advocates in the
country, is organizing and sponsoring a pilot orientation and training
workshop primarily targeted at nongovernment organizations: "FOSS and
NGOs: PANAHON NA!".

-------------------------------------------
See below:
A. Workshop Objectives
B. Workshop Program: Modules
C. Target Participants
D. Workshop Registration Fees
E. Contact Information
--------------------------------------------

A. WORKSHOP OBJECTIVES:
========================

1. To orient NGOs leaders and staff about the political considerations and
technical reasons for using Free/Open Source Software (FOSS) viz.
proprietary software
2. To train NGO leaders and staff on actual use of FOSS alternatives for
basic NGO computer desktop applications
3. To help NGOs develop institutional plans to promote usage of FOSSwithin
their organization
4. To engender a community of NGO FOSS users to facilitate learning
support, promote joint activities, and further collective advocacy towards
the dissemination of FOSS to the broader development community

B. WORKSHOP PROGRAM. The Workshop will have three main modules:
=========================================================

Module 1: What is FOSS? Why FOSS? (Socio-Political Orientation)
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
-------------
This introductory module will discuss the political and social concerns
relating to Free and Open Source Software (FOSS). It will include an
introduction to FOSS, its beginnings and current state of its development;
it will tackle its comparative advantages over proprietary software, its
limitations and possibilities. The session will also deal with the larger
socio-political implications of FOSS as a communication rights issue.
(e.g., issues such as "intellectual property", copyleft/creative commons
licenses/open content, etc.)

Module 2: FOSS in Action (Technical Orientation/Hands-On Training)
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
-----------------

2A: Open Source Alternatives: Common NGO Office Applications
The first part shall be devoted to introducing open source applications
within a MS Windows PC environment (assumed as the current dominant
situation of most NGOs). Trainors will demonstrate the features of FOSS
capable of the most common tasks such as word processing, presentations,
spreadsheets, internet browsing and e-mail, within the Windows operating
system. The objective is to present alternatives to MS Office and Internet
applications, and to answer common questions from participants about the
existing FOSS alternatives (e.g., OpenOffice).

2B: Open Source Alternatives: Operating System
The second part shall deal with the more comprehensive alternative,
demonstrating the use of FOSS as the main operating system for NGO
workstations. To be introduced will be the localized FOSS operating system
developed by the Department of Science and Technology, Bayanihan Linux.
Intended as a basic orientation for NGO users who want to migrate from
proprietary software OS environments (i.e., Microsoft Windows), included
in this session are basic installation and configuration tips for simple
NGO PCs and LAN (Local Area Network) environments.

In this module, participants will work with actual PCs in a computer
laboratory, to have a hands-on experience of the above.

Module 3: Organizational/Community Planning
--------------------------------------------------------------

3A. Institutional Action Planning.
This session will enable participants to assess their organizations'
capacity to adopt open source software and develop an appropriate action
plan for their own NGO. This session will include an orientation to
Technology Assessment and present possible strategies for migration. In
the process, actual case studies involving local organizations, which have
adopted and continue to use FOSS systems, will be presented (including
their learnings).

3B. Community Planning.
Time will be allotted to brainstorm action plans accross NGOs, in terms of
further training, user support, policy advocacy, etc. Representatives from
existing FOSS advocacy organizations and networks will be also invited to
interact with participants. It is expected that an NGO open source network
will be formed and mobilized in promoting FOSS in teh development
community.

TRAINING TEAM. FOSS advocates from different organizations: FOSS
advocacy/training/technical support groups (e.g., Open Minds, Philippine
Linux Users Group), academe (UP, Ateneo), government (Dept of Science and
Technology); and ICT-oriented NGOs (WomensHub, FMA) make up the Training
Team and will act as resource persons.

C. TARGET PARTICIPANTS
======================
- This workshop is targeted to the majority of NGO leaders and staff who
are in the **basic computer user level** (i.e., not necessarily
technically-oriented staff or in-house "techies").
- Since this workshop is oriented to arriving at some organizational
decisions, there is a preference for NGO participants in decision-making
positions.
- To maximize impact, having NGO personnel who have the capacity to
re-echo this training within the NGOs would be ideal.

D. WORKSHOP REGISTRATION FEES
==============================
Though basic costs of the workshop are being sponsored by FMA through a
small grant by the Southeast Asia Committee on Advocacay (SEACA), a
nominal registration fee of One Hundred Fifty Pesos (P150.00) will be
collected to cover post-workshop coordination costs.

Hi Andie and all!

Thanks for your efforts to get us the report guidelines.  At least I now have a clear view of how to present myself.  I am sorry for not communicating often about my progress but its because I am still trying to adjust (this is my 2nd week)
Have a great time and enjoy your internship.

I emailed Leticia Saloman about the first report. We’re free to write it in any format. She just provided some guidelines to help us focus on the issues that need to be addressed in our reports.

Guidelines:

- your experience in settling in the organization;

- your working arrangements (are you provided with the material you need to do the work you are required? Re you being paid in time?)

- your work program (what project are you working on, your work for the next months);

- impressions about the organization hosting you (how do you understand their work?)

- the scope of your work (thematic, how do you see the organizations goals and mission).

- projects and tasks you may have completed / achieved so far

She also said : Feel free to add any other comments and information. You can even speak of problems! Don't worry about length. There's no right or wrong here: we want to learn from your experience too and this is the best way for us to keep up with your work at the host. There's no particular structure in which you should organize the report.

Hope this helps. Good luck with your reports!

Hi,
wht about your internee? I have paste some important information of the 1st report. Leticia has sent me this information about the report:
[

About the report, you are free to write it in any format you would prefer. I prepared a set of questions that are meant just to orientate you in terms of issues you should address in your report. It's more of a checklist rather than a template.

- your experience in settling in the organization;

- your working arrangements (are you provided with the material you need to do the work you are required? Re you being paid in time?)

- your work program (what project are you working on, your work for the next months);

- impressions about the organization hosting you (how do you understand their work?)

- the scope of your work (thematic, how do you see the organizations goals and mission).

- projects and tasks you may have completed / achieved so far

Feel free to add any other comments and information. You can even speak of problems! Don't worry about length. There’s no right or wrong here: we want to learn from your experience too and this is the best way for us to keep up with your work at the host. There’s no particular structure in which you should organize the report.]]

Thanks for your interest. pls share ur experience with me.

Thanks again.

Zadid

Dear friends,

Sorry for my late response.

This is Tomal form PROSHIAK, Bangladesh. First I would like to thank
all of you for sharing your nice experience about GKP-YFP.

It is to introduce myself as a GKP youth fellow and to let you know
that I am enjoying my internee at PROSHIAK, one of the largest NGO in
Bangladesh. Here I am researching on its existing activities and I have
taken a pilot project on ICT4D issues.

One of my objectives of this project is to make awareness among the
rural people of the remote areas of Bangladesh about ICT facilities. To
make it done with the help of youths I am making a youth campaign with
support form PROSHIKA in line with WSIS (World Summit on Information
Society) youth caucus activities. During the campaign I will arrange a
number of videoconferences for local people and their expatriate kith
and kens, exercise sending and receiving emails at the least. It will
certainly make awareness among them about use of ICT in their
day-to-day life for sustainable development. Moreover, the youth
community will able to use technology to address community needs with
business approach and that will negate digital divide in the local
community as well as in the whole nation. For this youth campaign, the
whole process should be centered in a local youth group. The
campaigners also should have in mind through this campaign they should
usher all the possible opportunities for the youth through direct use
of ICT.

If you want to know more about me please see the Attachment 1.
If you want to know more about my activities at PROSHIKA please see the
Attachment 2

Finally, I would like to thank Zadid to take such a great initiative
for the gathering.

I request all of you to keep in touch.

Tomal

When things in your life seem almost too much to handle, when 24 hours in a day are not enough, remember the mayonnaise jar........and the beer.

A professor stood before his philosophy class and had some items in front of him. When the class began, wordlessly, he picked up a very large and empty mayonnaise jar and proceeded to fill it with golf balls.

He then asked the students if the jar was full. They agreed that it was.

So the professor then picked up a box of pebbles and poured them into the jar. He shook the jar lightly. The pebbles rolled into the open areas between the golf balls. He then asked the students again if the jar was full. They agreed it was.

The professor next picked up a box of sand and poured it into the jar. Of course, the sand filled up everything else. He asked once more if the jar was full. The students responded with an unanimous "yes."

The professor then produced two cans of beer from under the table and poured the entire contents into the jar, ffectively filling the empty space between the sand. The students laughed.

"Now," said the professor, as the laughter subsided, "I want you to recognize that this jar represents your life. The golf balls are the important things -- your family, your children, your health, your friends, your favorite passions, God -- things that if everything else was lost and only they remained, your life would still be full.

"The pebbles are the other things that matter like your job, your house, your car. The sand is everything else -- the small stuff.

"If you put the sand into the jar first," he continued, "there is no room for the pebbles or the golf balls. The same goes for life. If you spend all your time and energy on the small stuff, you will never have room for the things that are important to you.

"Pay attention to the things that are critical to your happiness. Play with your children. Take time to get medical checkups. Take your partner out to dinner. Play another 18. There will always be time to clean the house, and fix the disposal. Take care of the golf balls first, the things that really matter. Set your priorities. The rest is just sand."

One of the students raised her hand and inquired what the beer represented. The professor smiled. "I'm glad you asked," he said.

"It just goes to show you that no matter how full your life may seem, there's always room for a couple of beers."

I am also very interested in ICT4D awareness in the rural and other marginalised areas and hope to get that chance later.  My internship right now involves forwarding of women's advocacy work via the internet which I feel do not realy reach the rural and poor populations.

Hi you guys! Thanks for replying to my message.

Edna: Wow! So you’re right smack in the middle of the discussions. I think that’s really exciting because you become aware of what’s going on in the group and at the same time, you help organize the flow of messages and let these people be heard.

Daryl: I envy you. The Mailstation Net office is in Guadalupe, near the MMDA station there. Ateneo is so much closer to my house. I graduated from ADMU a couple of years back. I have some friends from UP Fine Arts and couple in the Pep Squad. Anyways, I’m glad you’re learning a lot in your internship. I, on the other hand, am just winging it. Not that I’m complaining, but I’ve had to learn most things from scratch. I know the whole learning experience is good, but we’ve only got two months left and still so much to do. What are your projects with the Foundation for Media Alternatives?

Ganiul: I’m glad the teachers are open to the idea of learning more to be able to teach more. I guess that’s what makes a good teacher. Good luck with conducting your seminar.

Would you guys mind sharing a bit more about yourselves? I would like for all of us to be good friends.

A little something about me: I studied computer science, but didn’t learn a thing about programming. Instead, I focused more on multimedia arts – graphic and web design, as well as a bit of animation. I have two brothers and two sisters and a lot of pets. I like reading and writing, and watching movies. I am such a fan of the LOTR trilogy, both the book and the movie. You can search for me in Friendster, just type in the email address slysse@....

Hi Andie and others,
Thanks for your mail. Actually I am working for our rural people and young group. There are now no group of kids. but my host org has a plan for that. We organized a discussion session among the rural school teachers. They encourage me and give me word to help. However our school teachers are not very expert on ICT. They have more lack of knowledge about ICT and also ICT4D. However I am trying to knowledge share with them by organize workshop and discussion session. They have take it very seriously and their participation encourage me very much.
How is your internship and first report?

Have you guys submitted your first report to GKP? I was told we were going

get it? Thanks!

Hey Andie,

It seem tough but just have a good time and work hard.
My internship involves distribution of electronic bulletin to various partners and members of my host organization and maintaining an e-mail list.  Do you think its cool.
Talk to you later.

im a UP graduate and yes, im an intern at the foundation for media
alternatives near ADMU. my responsibilities here are kind of light as it
does not entail 'technical stuff' like yours, andie but im learning a lot
about ICT.

i don't have the report template yet but i think leticia, from the gkp
secretariat, would be sending them to us sometime this week or next week.
she also said that it would just be a series of questions so they know
what's happening in our respective internships.

hey andie, where's your office at?

Ey guys!

This is Andie, also from the Philippines. My host organization Mailstation
Net, it's an Internet Service Provider. Pardon the website, it's old and i
haven't exactly gotten around to fixing it. I plan to revamp the whole thing
coz it's kinda offending my aesthetic sense. My internship's okay, a bit
hard because of the technical stuff involved. How about you guys? How are
your internships?

DARYL: You're working with the host org in Ateneo, right? Do you go to ADMU?

GANIUL: Your work is so cool! Do you get to teach the kids about computers
and stuff?

Everyone else: Share a little bit about your work experience.

Have you guys submitted your first report to GKP? I was told we were going
to be given templates for our reports. Does anyone have a copy? Where'd you
get it? Thanks!

Andie
