My friend and have installed iGlance;
tried to add each other 'buddy'..
iGlance says error "Unknown user".
Any thoughts on what the cause of problem might be?

Hi there, thanks for writing. I'm not entirely sure what you have in
mind. iGlance is a Win32 C++ application that operates on the user's
client computer; it's not a Java serverside application.

Overall, I'd say it's probably not what you're looking for. Sorry!

P.S. I just thought to try running iGlance as Administrator - but -
this didn't help at all.

Since I last posted my friend and I have explored iGlance together
(but no audio - we talked on YMessenger instead!) - and can share
desktops, send files, text chat .... I could even see her cam ok, but
still neither of us can use audio.

(I wonder does iGlance use an audio codec that used to be built in to
Windows but perhaps isn't with Vista ? - This causes a problem with
YMessenger audio on Vista, until the user installs a separate little
codec thing - which I've done for Yahoo, but maybe iGlance uses
another different one ?)

?? My User Id on iGlance is "Eagle_Kiwi" - which I thought shows
clearly under my name in the Group here (and I see yours
is "quinthar").
Anyway, I'm happy to provide a logfile, or debugging, or whatever, if
you tell me how.

By the way, I've since spoken with a friend (in Baltimore, MD) who
also has Vista (Pro, I think) and SHE has exactly the same problem
that I do here - so indeed it MAY be connected with Vista, I guess ?
(Do you know anyone with Vista where audio DOES work ?)

BTW, both her and I use IE7, and not Firefox (I notice that
distinction in your download/install instructions, but no mention of
98/XP/Vista etc I could see).

Hm, unfortunately I've little experience running iGlance under Vista.
What is your iGlance username? Problems like this are very difficult to
diagnose without a debugger, but I'll see what I can learn from your
logfile.  Thanks!

Hi There,
Veteran with PC audio, but new to iGlance.

Configure Audio seems to want me to be "none - disable audio capture".
Yet under that is another line "Microphone (Realtek High Defini" -
which indeed IS my normal sound card, but selecting that gives
instant "error".
(And the waveform shows just a green horizontal and 2 red diagonal
lines).

But - my mic etc is fine - I use it every day, on YM, Skype, etc etc.

Is there any way around this ? (BTW, I am Vista Home Basic, latest
Java, DirectX, Flash, etc etc).

i am also interested in learning how the scheme fails over when the peer
holding the token suddenly crashes. in c/s scheme, flow control is
centralized by controlling ptt server.

did not work. I trid both executables. I am not suprised, not all
applications worked under WINE... I can install but i doesn't run

Anyway, I run the LINUX Opensuse 10.1 64bits OS and it is SOLID.
My wife has a Mac so we are stuck for iglance for now.

Hi David.

the login's problems seems resolved, so I will try to use iGlance with my friends soon.
The second problem still applies:

The logging functionality uses a "channel" design, so you can enable and
disable feature-specific logging at runtime. The macros of interest are:

GINFOC( ) - Log to a specific channel, eg:
	 GINFOC( 'v', "Video blah blah" );

GINFO( ) - Log to the channel set in GINFOCHANNEL (at the top of the file)
	 #undef GINFOCHANNEL
	 #define GINFOCHANNEL 'v'
	 ...
	 GINFO( "Video blah blah" );

GWARN( ) - Log a warning; not tied to any channel (always logged)

As for the functions, the only one that really matters is:

GLogFilterSet( ) - Changes which channels are enabled, eg:
	 GLogFilterSet( "vrV" );

There are 52 channels: each uppercase and lowercase letter is its own
channel. Furthermore, enabling the channel 'x' enables all lower-cased
channels, and 'X' enables all uppercase.

Does this answer your question?

I want to be able to debug the source code. Can you point me towards
docs on how to use the logging in the code

Found these functions, but I am unclear on how to use them, or the
GINFO or GWARN macros.

LIBPIG_API  string GLogFilterGet( );
LIBPIG_API  void   GLogFilterSet( const string& enable );
LIBPIG_API  bool   GLogFilterTest( char c );

Thanks

Hi David,
I've experienced many troubles when I've tried to use iGlance:
after the installation I have chosen one login and password and all
has worked; but when, restarting the application, a I've tried to
reconnect an error of bad user/passwd is reported. After this error
every attempt to create a new account ends into an error stating that
the username is already in use.

Maybe these issues are network related, but there is another strange problem:
I've installed iGlance as Administrator, but if I try to run the
program with any other account an error is reported stating that
iGlance is already running (even after a reboot).

I hope that this can be useful in improving the application,
regards

Incidentally, I finally resolved the server problem – as Peter suggested, it was just a matter of reconnecting to the MySQL database on occasion.  Not sure why switching from Fedore Core 3 to FC 5 required that change, however.

Thanks for the suggestion Peter, and sorry to everyone for the inconvenience!

This way maybe you will also find MySQL replication and failover a fun.

IMO, it is harmless to retry/reconnect/failover when an error such like

  CR_SERVER_LOST

  CR_SERVER_GONE_ERROR

  CR_SERVER_HANDSHAKE_ERR

occurred to mysql_store_result().

So the iGlance server suffered a motherboard failure, thus triggering a big upgrade of hardware and software alike.  One change to the system is now we’re using MySQL 5, and something strange is afoot.

Basically, the connection between the iGlance server and MySQL just stops working on occasion.  No other changes to the code, and it works great for hours or even days, and then spontaneously stops working.  The server in this state is still “working” fine in that it is processing and responding messages, but anything involving the database fails to work.  Restart the server without touching MySQL at all, and it works fine for another day or so.

Any ideas?  Is there some kind of age or query limit on a connection, thus requiring an occasional reconnect?

Hi there, thanks for the question.  Unfortunately, iGlance doesn’t support that feature yet.  However, you can maintain multiple simultaneous conversations, though I recognize this isn’t really an equivalent feature.
