Encl: Session Brief

Brief for the session to be conducted on Cyber Security for CSI Chapter
members in Goa.

It is a fact that the data that we all accumulate in computer systems has
acquired significant value. Some would even go to say that within a month
of installation, the accumulated data is more expensive than the
server/storage purchased. Cybercrime has changed from being malicious to
one where people sit down and figure out ways of making money out of cyber
crime. A clear indication of this is the shift from network/perimeter
level attacks to attacks on data, applications and web services. The
effort then, is not to just annoy, prove a point or even cause downtime
but financial benefits at another’s expense. Cyber attacks are no longer
by a few disorganized geeks but organized criminal syndicates. The profile
of the criminals has changed as has their methodology and purpose.

Criminal syndicates extract information for fraud, extortion or other
criminal activities, cause downtimes and loss in business. Some of them
work for competitors – imagine the impact on a telecom firm or a bank if
the client database is stolen. A type of cyber crime like phishing has
been in existence over the last 10 years as a method for committing online
financial fraud. This has become large today with syndicate recruiters
trawling websites, bulletin boards and chat rooms to collect information
about potential candidates they could recruit to perpetuate crime. India
as an emerging economic powerhouse with its own marquee organizations,
Intellectual property and burgeoning spending class will also attract
cyber syndicates. We have already witnessed several data thefts as well as
phishing attacks and this is going to increase. The online world will
closely resemble real world crime driven by fraud and financial gains.

CSI Chapter invites you for a one hour session on "Cyber Security" on the
19th of July 2008 at the Goa Chamber of Commerce
Timing: 3.00 PM - 4.00 PM
