Well, I spend much of my free time ssh'd into the phone and installing
packages and trying them out (just an end-user, eh? :-) but if you
mail me your Python scripts I can always try them out on the phone. In
the meanwhile, if you're not going to be trying to communicate with
FreeRunner-specific hardware from your programs, there's a slightly
intimidating way to get the Openmoko environment running on your PC,
so you can try developing userspace programs, like in Python, without
actually having the phone: http://wiki.openmoko.org/wiki/Qemu
No, I haven't tried this out yet; I'm still busy playing with the
actual phone :) in my spare time... but I plan to get around to it,
since it's a good way to really mess around with the software ;-)
And yes, there is an "app-wpset" package in the repos that I installed
and tried out, but, IMO, it sucks and could be substantially improved
on. One HUGE irritant is that it appears to use a built-in GTK File
Chooser dialog, which, on a screen that small, scrunches up the file
list so badly that you can only read one or two characters. What is
needed is to use a custom hand-built dialog for choosing files, which
uses the available screen area more intelligently. Other features can
be added, such as a thumbnail of the image file that is currently
selected. In fact, it would be nice to have an "Appearance" applet -
one that not only does the wallpaper, but could also set a solid-color
background, and change the features displayed on the home screen
(enable/disable the digital clock, or change it to analog, or change
it's placement, font, size etc; what icons are shown on the home
screen, and other settings that are available for tweaking). The
current procedure is to SSH into the phone and manually change gconf
settings and (IIRC) restart X or the phone.
What's a "moko 9"?

Ed.
