Yes :-(
I was very happy when, at a recent contract, the firm I was
contracting with went out of their way to assist me in getting
connected to their VPN from Linux, instead of insisting on the default
Windows-only client provided by their proprietary VPN appliance
vendor.

Just like it's almost certain that there *are* some good people at
that Redmond-based co. who may be genuinely friends of FOSS, but the
company's general track record tars all of them with the same brush...
it is obvious that while that three-letter giant might in general be a
"friend" of FOSS, there are certainly people in there who don't want
anything to do with FOSS.

Will people who are members on both ILUG-Goa and FSUG-Goa kindly stop
cross-posting to both lists? Not only does it create confusion in
recipients' mailboxes, it is also against ILUG-Goa list rules.

People who have in the past been grumbling about extraordinary levels
of rule enforcement, please note that:
a) This is not a moderator notice but a personal request
b) The ILUG-Goa moderators have been overlooking several instances in
the recent past, of cross-posting between various lists. That doesn't
mean it is now acceptable... please STOP this.

Thank you.

Ubuntu and Mint8 RC both take too ...... long to identify the partitions on the
hard disk.

If the windows partition is resized to allow linux installation using a windows
utility, the partition table might be corrupt. If previously installed linux
(especially SuSE) was there on the partition and the partition is deleted in
windows then also the partition table might get corrupted. A FAT check on
Windows partition and rewriting of MBR might solve the issue.

How do you enable wifi adapter (Atheros) on Acer Nettop?

Yeah maybe a bad image....
Since you're getting the same error from both the CD boot and the USB boot.

BTW had read the specs in the first post as Acer notebook, instead of Acer
netbook!! :P ...tht's why I'd asked the question!!

Tried this, but it's the same problem. It doesn't show me the
partitions on the hard disk, at Step 4, no partitions are shown.
Obviously, I can't proceed.

External DVD drive is connected -- that's how I can try and install

It's not a lappy, it's a netbook, as I think I mentioned.

This is important, because it's for a friend whom I've convinced to
give Linux a try. If I can't find a good solution (without messing his

Celestia has been around for quite a long time....I've played around with it
quite a bit some years ago. It is really educational and enjoyable at the same
time. My first impression when i heard of it was like..."A free tool that does
all that?? No way!!"....but I was definitely proven wrong.

Even minute details like the Hubble space telescope and the ISS are clearly
shown, not to mention accurate data (I've checked!!) of many many stars and
interstellar objects

Highly recommended tool for every space enthusiast!!

She does say that audio is working very well for her. Kind of
encourages me to try again after my rather disappointing failure to
get even simple audio output with Ubuntu Studio 9.04 (though I'm a
veritable n00b at audio production on any OS).
http://ubuntustudio.org/KarmicKoala has the release notes for the new
version, and they seem encouraging. In addition, the PulseAudio setup
in 9.10 beta seemed to work pretty well for audio output out of the
box, without my having to poke around in any config files (e.g.
alsa-base.conf for 9.04 needed an option model=dell-m6 added, to
identify the IDT codec used in my laptop's chipset).

I wonder about Lennart Poettering's rant about Ubuntu's handling of

which is still New/Undecided/Unassigned :-( Is it fixed? Ah, well,
guess I'll just have to download it one of these days and see if it
works. Or try out Fedora instead. I wonder if

Hmm... update: Ars Technica says "Granting a patent on the underlying
concept of sudo to Microsoft over two decades after the tool was
invented by open source developers would indeed be foolish, but that
is not at all what happened."

http://arstechnica.com/open-source/news/2009/11/microsofts-psuedo-sudo-patent-do\
esnt-really-cover-sudo.ars?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=rss
OR
http://preview.tinyurl.com/yhru62p

Quote:
==============
Although the subject of Microsoft's patent is related to sudo in the
sense that it also deals with mechanisms for performing an operation
with heightened privileges, the scope is clearly different. The two
are different in, for example, the way that a train is different from
a car. Unfortunately, the hysteria surrounding the patent is creating
needless uncertainty about sudo. To clarify the matter, sudo
maintainer Todd Miller posted a statement on the sudo mailing list
explaining the difference.

"I've already received a number of questions about US patent 7,617,530
that some people seem to believe might cover sudo. I don't think that
is the case," he wrote. "Sudo simply doesn't work this way. When a
command is run via sudo the user is actively running the command as a
different user. What is described in the patent is a mechanism whereby
an application or the operating system detects that an action needs to
be run with increased privileges and automatically prompts the user
with a list of potential users that have the appropriate privilege
level to perform the task."

Although the patent doesn't cover sudo, it's worth noting that the
specific elements that it describes are indeed found in the graphical
interface of PolicyKit, a relatively modern Linux framework for
privilege escalation. PolicyKit was developed after the Microsoft
patent was filed, meaning that it doesn't constitute prior art.
==============

So I'm still not clear about whether this threatens FOSS or not -
IANAL, anyhow. Looking at the track record of the company that owns
the patent, though, doesn't inspire much confidence :-/

Cheers

Groklaw reports on a new software patent issued to Microsoft. "Lordy,
lordy, lordy. They have no shame. It appears that Microsoft has just
patented sudo, a personalized version of it. Here it is, patent

wasn't invented by Microsoft." Computerworld's IT Blogwatch covers

If you love tweaking every aspect of Firefox with the browser's very useful
about:config feature, but you get frustrated trying to decipher cryptic
configuration strings (what's a 0 or 2 mean for layout.spellcheckDefault?),
Firefox extension Configuration Mania is for you.

We've mentioned Configuration Mania a couple of times, but it's just
released an update and is one of those extensions worth a reminder every now
and then. It's improved significantly since the last time we dedicated a
post to it, and it's a great way to tweak some of the finer features of
Firefox without digging into the relatively obtuse about:config menu.

"This vulnerability allows the same-origin policy of Adobe Flash to be
exploited to allow nearly any site that allows user generated content to be
attacked. No fix for this vulnerability currently exists.

This is frightening in that 99% of internet users worldwide use Adobe Flash.
Almost everyone using the internet is vulnerable to a website that allows
content to be updated inappropriately. That's not hyperbole - it's just
fact."

Hi,
There is a not-for-profit organisation with about 10-15 desktops which
wants to switch to GNU/Linux. They would need to set up a Linux
server, and run all the desktops on Linux. One or two desktops will be
dual-boot with Windows.
Who are the people in Goa who can do this for them? Once the NGO has a
list of names, they will give them all details and the parties will
have to submit a proposal laying down their charges for doing the job.
It does not have to be an organisation that submits a bid for the job
-- individuals who can take on the job are equally welcome. Note that
this is a not-for-profit organisation.
You can write to me off-group about this.
Regards,
VG

Hi,

For the last two years Zyxware has been successfully running a low
cost Free Software CD/DVD distribution service at
http://www.zyxware.com/requestcd. People across India have been
utilizing this service to get access to the different Free Software
Operating Systems and other Free Software packages without having to
download them from the internet. Although we were running the service
at an at-cost policy and we did not promote it other than through the
user groups, it had succeeded in reaching to different parts across
the country. We are extremely grateful to the people who have helped
us in spreading the word about the RequestCD service.

We had to take down the old system as part of upgrading our site and
we have re-launched the Request CD service under an online shop at
Zyxware.com. The requestcd URL <http://www.zyxware.com/requestcd> will
take you directly to the list of Free Software distributions and
packages available from us. There are currently around 250 different
distributions, versions and full repositories available.

If you do not see a Free Software OS distributions or repository
online at the shop you can please let us know by email at
requestcd@... and we will try to download and add them to the
list.

If you like this service I would humbly request you to consider
blogging/twittering about the service and help us spread the word
about it. I hope that you will continue to find our Free Software
services useful and help us in spreading the power of Free Software
across the country. I look forward to hearing your
feedback/comments/suggestions.

Cheers
Anoop John

True, and this used to be what I recommended to people, but the URL is
anything but easy to remember :)
In addition, a couple of people took a look at this page, and then
asked me "why do there have to be SO MANY applications for each
purpose... which one(s) should we use!!??" ;-P Now that took longer to
answer than the original question did! :-)

Cheers

I prefer this:
http://www.linuxrsp.ru/win-lin-soft/table-eng.html

It is not so much updated but gives a real good list of aplications.

There is some list on the RH site also. Sorry I forgot the URL :-(
