I am pavan. I and murali had assembled my new machine last month. Everything was fine except that, the motherboard does not have an AGP slot. In the last week I replaced the motherboard with the one that has an AGP slot. The problems started with that. The system is not recognising the installed AGP card.
The mother board has an on board Debug. That gives an error that says
1) Can't detect VGA card. The error also indicates that it hasn't found any display device.
I tried with a VGA card (inserted in the PCI slot). Then it was working fine.
1) What I want to clarify was does the installation of the AGP card requires any other settings to be done (like jumper settings for CPU or in the BIOS....) (This is a weird doubt which I am having).
2) Is the mother board faulty?
Thanks in advance.
I am also sending the details of the the AGP card and the motherboard :
BIOS : Award System BIOS installed in Socket (Flash and PnP)
Expansion Slots : One AGP slot, three PCI Master Slots and two 16-bit ISA slots
others : Support Ultra DMA/33, ACPI, SM bus, GPID, USB Bus, ATX Power Supply, IrDA
Debug Sensor onboard.

Hi,
Yes, 'autoboot.bat" on chip CD will not work, cause of wrong path
specification. From dos give correct path to initrd.img.
it goes like this,
"loadlin.exe e:\xxx\vmlinuz initrd=\yyy\initrd.img"
It works. I did it two times.

I got hold of an ancient 486 and tried to install Linux on it. The RH
6.0 CD from Chip gave trouble "can not load initird.img" . I tried boot
floppies made from PCQ RH 5.2 - same problem. Booted Dos from a floppy
and tried "autoboot.bat" from Chip CD. That path for initrd.img itself
was wrong (Chip people please note!). Typed out the command - same
problem. Tried Autoboot from PCQ CD - smooth installation (Thank you
PCQ! - I knew I could trust you!).
Now for the main problem. Mouse is not recognised. I tried the old True
mouse (used "generic 3 button" in mouseconfig) swapped with a Logitech -
no use. My PC has only Linux - nothing else and I suspect problem with
IDE board. Any idea how I can find out?

I didn't know it was a winmodem... I can return it.. thats no problem... i
just want to challenge myself to make it work thats all... :-) It'll be a
good experience for me in writing a driver for myself and maybe a lot of
others, whose queries i have been seeing on other mailing lists. I think
i'll be doing a large thing for the linux community... I would like to get
the specs. of the modem... m not sure the manufacturer will pass it on
without a NDA....

Regarding winmodems on Linux you can check out
http://www.o2.net/~gromitkc/19990923a.html

Regarding writing drivers for the modem, you could check out the the linux

Hi there,
This is possible if you have and extra HDD I suppose where you can transfer
the contents of home to that HDD and then partition the older one to your
choice.
But, still it seems to be complex cause you will have to resize the NT
partitionMaybe you can try using partition Magic for all the resizing. And as
far as I
know it does not have any problems. Cause Partition Magic resizes the partitions
such that the inodes are properly arranged. I guess I tried it once and had to
reinstall LILO. That's All. Anyway I recommend that you back up your data before
doing anything with Partition Magic or resizing partitions.

Hi there,
I guess you must be using RHL 6.0 ( RedHat ). In RHL, the web server is
configured already to server CGI scripts. Only thing you need to do is write
your perl script and place it in /home/httpd/cgi-bin directory and try it out
by typing http://localhost/cgi-bin/myscript.pl where myscript.pl is the script
you place in the cgi-bin directory. Hope this helps.
BTW if you fire up your netscape browser, there is a link for documenatation on
apache there. There are a lot of FAQ's in that which might help.
Happy Linuxing...........

Dear ex_moderator,
You did more than `moderate'. You pushed hard for ilughyd so it is
what it is today. Hope you won't become `moderate' now that you no longer
moderate the list. Remember you still hold the purse strings. So your
fight for growth of list is still needed. Sure Vijay keeps up the ilughyd

hi Folks,
Just forgot to tell one thing. Presently Vijay has his exams and he will be
moderating the list from the 7th of the next month. So, till then I think

quit as the moderator not because of anyone, but because of some of my personal
things. Sorry If I have hurt someone unnecessrily. I guess I used to send around

This is more in the line of what Dr. Partha had said about
respecting our online time and mailbox space:
Instead of several messages sent one at a time, isnt there some
way in which all messages for the day get spooled up and then
u send out ONE LUG digest posting for the day.
I admire the enthu there is for Linux and all the postings are good
but... there is also too much of a good thing...
Please do not take me in the wrong sense!

Hi there,
Folks a good article on y2k and linux at linuxtoday. The article reads....
Sep 23, 1999, 18:40 UTC (0 Talkbacks) (617 reads) (Other
stories by David Bunnell)
[ Thanks to Doug Bostrom for this link. ]
"I predict that sometime during the first 10 years of the 21st
century, your digital lifestyle will come to an end when the
Internet crashes, as the result of an as-yet-unknown Y2K bug."
"Most likely, the bug will be the result of Microsoft's efforts to
make sure that the current version of Windows is
Y2K-compliant. This bug will trigger massive redundancy in all
Internet traffic among Windows-based computers, bringing
the World Wide Web to its knees. The collapse of the Internet
won't be permanent, but it will take years to recover..."
"Socially responsible nerds who have the technical skills to run
Linux should erase Windows immediately! If 5 million nerds
take action before that midnight, the collapse of the Internet
will be delayed by six months. If we can then get a million PC
users a month to make the switch, the Internet and life as we
know it will be saved. The digital lifestyle can live on."

Choose now for a better digital life. ;-)

India-based Web site offers raft of free OSes

The free software movement got another small boost
this week as an India-based group launched a
new Web site
offering users worldwide a host of different
operating systems and their accompanying documentation,
including
Linux.
The FreeOS.com site, based in Mumbai, India, which
staunchly opposes the time-honored and lucrative practice of
charging for operating systems, offers not just the
product but free documentation for at least 11
different operating
systems, including Linux which is heavily
documented, company officials noted.
Besides Linux, other operating systems supported
by the new Web site includes, Linux, FreeBSD, BPMK, Cynus,
FreeDos, Freedows, GNU Hurd, Minix, NetBSD,
OpenBSD, and VSTa.
While the site offers support for all 11 free
operating systems, officials at FreeOS.com admit
that the vast majority
of activity in this market revolves about Linux
and will probably remain that way for the foreseeable future.
However, with the growing popularity of the
free software movement spearheaded by Linux,
officials believe that
other lesser-known operating systems could
rise in popularity.
"FreeOS.com arrives at a point in the information
age when such operating systems are gaining gargantuan
proportions. Even more significant is that such
operating systems are distributed with their source
code, which
enables users to hone into the actual workings of
the system from scratch and modify it to meet their
needs," a
company spokesman said.
Other features available on FreeOS.com include a
large database of articles offering containing
concisely edited
technical information on operating systems and
other software products.
For more information users can contact www.freeos.com.
Hi there,
It seems no one seems to have problems with their systems running Linux.
Seems like everyone is in utopia <-- Linux related.
Ok Enuf of joking. Why doesn't anyone post their queries on this list ??
I know there are problems !! Cause the other day at the install fest, people
were asking me questions or someone else. Why don't you post your questions on
the list ?? And one more thing, do not ( <--- STRESS here ) call up someone on
the list and ask them why they are not replying to the queries ?? This is not
the way grown up individuals behave. The person whom I am talking about is
reading this mail I suppose. Please restrict your queries to this list and do
not make them personal ( at least not on the phone ).
Anyway coming to the point !
We are ordering more T-Shirts .....
Anyone who wants them mail me personally at sidcarter@...
I already have an order for four T-Shirts.
Mr.Rajendra prasad, I have your 2 T-Shirts.
Anyone wants to order any CD's ?? Mouse Pads ??
Penguin Power Caps ??? or Linux Books ??
Awaiting your queries ...........
P.S: the new mail address of the ilughyd mailing list is
ilughyd@egroups.com. The older mailing list has been _DELETED_
Even the web site is going to a new place. Will keep you guys posted.
