Folks,
August is almost over and I would be happy to receive your summaries
before September 10.
There have been some changed for those of you who upload their
observations to me by ftp. Please, use in the future the server
www.metrec.org (anonymous login) and upload your observations to
/me/meteoros.de/incoming/<your_directory> (see message footer).
At the same time the download site of MetRec has changed as well. It's not
anymore my RWTH homepage (as you know I'm leaving RWTH in these days, so I
had to transfer all the web and ftp stuff) but www.metrec.org/download.
The IMO ftp address has not changed.
All the best,
Sirko

Folks,
last month was a test :-), but this time I really need your June
observations until Monday, July 8, because of an early deadline for our
German meteor observers magazine "Meteoros". So, please, send me your June
data in the first days of July, of possible.
Many thanks,

Folks,
last night I checked which data of 2001 I did not yet receive.
If we take out the Leonids for a moment, I have all data from EVAST,
KNOAN, MOLSI, NITMI, QUIST, SPEUL, STORO and STRJO.
So far missing are:
BENOR - December data
KOSDE - a few files from August and December
MCNRO - everything fram late April
RENJU - everything from June
BENOR and KOSDE will ftp me their missing data in the next few days. Rob,
can you prepare another set of CDs with the remining 2001 data and send to
me? Juergen, can you ftp me your data as well?
Cheers,
Sirko

Ok, the _real_ reason for this mail was to remind you to send me your
December data until Friday next week! :-)
Now that 2001 is over I would also like to receive all the missing 2001
video data from those of you who did not send them at the end of each
month. The easiest way is probably to burn them on CD, but you can also
send them on ZIP disc or ftp them even if it's a larger amount of data.
I wish all of you a happy and successful 2002!

Folks,
many of you have been on tour for the Leonid storm, and from what I heard
so far most of you have been quite successful. As for the usual AKM
network summary for November , I suggest that you give me the figures for
the camera that you normally operate. It does not necessarily have to be
the final result of a detailed analysis of your tapes, but that of a
typical MetRec session.
Later on, of course, I would be interested to receive your full reduced
data, but before that I'll need to buy a new hard disc, anyway.

Dear friends,
as some of you may know I participated in the "Meteoroids" 2001 conference
in Kiruna two weeks ago. From our video network also Juergen Rendtel and
Ilkka Yrjola were there.
At the second day I gave a talk on the MetRec software, our video network
and the corresponding database, which received an overwhelming feedback.
In the next days I was contacted by many professionals who were deeply
impressed by our initiative and congratulated me to our success. Some of
them got interested in the software, too.
I tell you this to ensure you that our work is well appreciated by the
professional community, which is in my opinion another good motivation.
All the best,
Sirko

August 1 will be my last working day. After that I'm first flying to the
Meteoroids conference in Kiruna and afterwards we'll have our Perseid camp
in Ketzuer.
It would be a great help, if you could send me your complete July summary

following days, but the more data I get on August 1 the better.

Folks,
I'm in contact with an Australian guy who sells some second hand
electronic equipment. He got the stuff at an auction when some research
organisation located in Perth went bankrupt.
I got already some cheap frame grabbers from him. Before he wanted to
offer other equipment (mainly CCD video cameras) at EBAY he was so kind
and asked me whether we are interested in any of these devices. We
would get them certainly at a very good price.
You find his e-mail attached. If you are interested in any of these
cameras, please let me know a.s.a.p.
All the best,
Sirko
--
Hello Sirko,
I have 4 CCD cameras which are available for purchase.
Panasonic Model number WV-CP614E with lens, auto iris , Gen lock, video out
with power supply.
Kocom CCD (SVHS out, auto iris, video out) with power supply.
Pulnix TM-9701 (progressive scan) digital out, auto iris, lens
http://www.pulnix.com/imaging/c-9701.html
Pulnix TM-7AS with lens
Hoya Lens "Skylight [1B]" (Japan)
Cosmicar Lens * 2
B/W Quad input camera switch box with individual gain adjustment, video out +
power supply.
I really don't know much about CCD cameras but I will be taking photographs and
scanning the images for prospective buyers, I will send them as soon as they are
developed.
Let me know if you or any of your colleagues are interested.
They will go to auction in about a week, as soon as I have researched their
specifications.
Yours Sinerely,
Paul.
Folks,
on the given occasion I have to warn you that excessive video meteor
observation is dangerous and may have negative side effects on your
health. *Please*, be careful!
He is what I received from Rob...
--
Last week I had a disturbed night's sleep. Each time I awoke, I'd turn on
the monitor of the intensified meteor camera to check the sky conditions,
and see if the gain required adjustment after the moon had set. One
check gave a very strange appearance; the image was very bright and lots
of things like plants were moving around at the bottom of the image. At
that point I realised I'd let the camera run into daylight and I was in a
panic. The time switches much have failed. The intensifier would be
stuffed. I quickly turned the gain down and it became clear the plants were
under water and the sea was rippling across the middle of the lens. I
realised I shouldn't have set up my camera so far out on the beach. At that
point, I woke up!
Cheers, Rob

No, this is no reminder for sending me your Mai data! :-)
The month is not yet over, so it would be ways too early to ask for them.
Two weeks ago Carl Johannink pointed me to a minor shower called eta
Lyrids, that Dutch observers have been observing earlier this month and
also in previous years. I did a quick check on my own video data, which
show a nice radiant at the position given by Carl.
For this reason, please, do not send me just the monthly reports this time,
but also all PosDat files of May. Of course, I'll even more happy if you
ftp me already all of your May data by the end of the week, as most of you
will do, anyway.
Best wishes,
Sirko

Du musst doch sowieso wenigstens die Stunde aendern - Cuno zeigt doch MEZ bzw.
MESZ an. Und wenn Du
mehrere Bilder addierst, dann ist die Zeit auch nicht auswertbar, da
'verschmiert'. Oder verstehe
ich was falsch?

Hi Sirko,
Dann
w"ar eine Fehlerquelle weniger da.

Hello folks,
last night I finished the preparation of the April data. It still requires
a lot of manual work by me until I can put everything into the archive.
I will not complain about those among you who participate for the first or
second month. In the beginning there are a lot of mistakes that can be
made. However, even some of the long-term observers are sometimes a bit
careless and make mistakes that are not necessary and that cost me a lot
of time.
So, please, be careful with your video observations. Take yourself
some time to really check your observations. Are there misidentified
reference stars with large errors? Is the time base correct? Have I copied
the post-processed file to the data directory? Have I deleted the PosDat
files and possible false detections when restarting MetRec?
There is a simple test for all the corrdinate stuff. As soon as the first
meteor is detected, you should compare it's position relative to
neighbouring stars with the plot in the star map. If the meteor is in a
wrong position there, something must have gone wrong.
Thanks,
Sirko
PS: There are also positive examples. The observations of Mirko, for
example, are always on time and accurately processed leaving me with only
a minimum of work.

Hi Sirko,
Verlust vom n"achsten Meteor in Kauf nehmen will.

Does anyone know the quality of the Avenir 25mm f/0.95 Video-C lens?
It is designed for a 1 inch CCD. The cost in Australia is slightly cheaper
(about 80%) than the Fujinon 25mm f/0.85 lens.

Hi folks,
I'm eagerly awaiting your March data. :-)
Cheers,

PS: As I'm too lazy to look for all of your mail addresses at the end of
each month I've just created a small mailing list with all active members
of our video network. You will receive mails via akm-network@yahoogroups.com.
An alternative and much more intuitive address is network@....
