Topic: Web Searching and Browsing in a Multilingual World

Speaker: Wingyan Chung, Assistant Professor, Santa Clara University

Internet usage has grown tremendously in recent years, with the most rapid growth in some non-English-speaking regions. However, support for searching and browsing non-English Web content is much weaker than for English content. In this presentation, Dr. Chung will describe a framework for developing Web portals to support searching and browsing in a multilingual world, and report on the experimental results and lessons learned from studying Chinese, Spanish, and Arabic portals developed based on the framework. He will also discuss the implications and insights of these findings for software developers, computing researchers, and people interested in this emerging domain.

Dr. Wingyan Chung is an assistant professor in the Department of Operations and Management Information Systems (OMIS) in the Leavey School of Business at Santa Clara University. He received his Ph.D. in Management Information Systems from The University of Arizona and a MS and BBA from The Chinese University of Hong Kong. His research interests include knowledge management, Web analysis and mining, data and text mining, information visualization, and human-computer interaction.
