hey -
here's an article from southerner.net -- a great bit of investigative
journalism by fetzer mills, about the flooding in north carolina.
the irresponsible policies that have been enacted over the course of
half a century there -- hog farms and junkyards full of poisonous
materials located in a flood plain?!?! -- were really responsible for
the incredible damage in NC.
the insurance companies refer to hurricanes and floods as "acts of
God," but the poor planning is strictly our fault.
when we think of environmental responsibility, we're too often guilty
of only thinking in terms of car pollution and trash and littering:
the stuff that's the everyday responsibility of individuals. but a
huge majority of the pollution and environmental degradation out there
is caused by huge companies and bad government policy.
