can someone give me some advice

Hi, my name is Kevin and I'm 17 years old. I have
an idea for a system to improve an already existing
house hold item. I've had the idea since I was 16.
Every one I talk to says it is a really good and simple
idea and that they would probably buy it if they saw
it in the store. But no one takes me seriously
because of my age so I'm going to pursue this on my own.
Can anyone give me some tips on the whole patenting
process and how to go about getting my invention on the
shelves of major department stores? I would appreciate it
