Well, I'm working on lightning capture for energy usage. There
are several problems in this. One is the fact that your dealing with
multiple strikes (an average of 4, it happens so fast it only looks
like one 'bolt') each of which is about 10^12 watts. Another problem
is that it's about 20,000*c (about 3 times hotter than the sun).
I have 2 very different ways of attempting to harness this power,
the problem is lack of money and the fact that tests have to be at
full power (can't call down a half power lightning bolt).
Your second idea is somewhat flawed in terms. You can't destroy
energy, you could cancel it by setting up an interference pattern.
