Subject: ALERT: House May Vote Thursday on Roe v. Wade
Source: National Right to Life, May 19, 2000
-------------------------
ALERT:
House May Vote Thursday on Roe v. Wade
-------------------------
Washington -- The National Right to Life Committee expects a vote on
Thursday, May 25th, on a motion to express approve of the Roe v. Wade
Supreme Court decision that legalized abortion on demand. The motion
would
endorse a resolution expressing the opinion that Roe v. Wade "secures an

important constitutional right, and such decision should not be
overturned."
----------------------------
This pro-abortion resolution was first offered in the Senate last
October
21st by pro-abortion Sen. Tom Harkin (D-IA), where it was adopted (as an

amendment to the Partial-Birth Abortion Ban Act) on a close vote of
51-47.
Now, pro-abortion lawmakers apparently plan to force the House to vote
on
whether to agree with the Senate's action.
---------------------------
This vote, if it occurs, will be the first time that the House has ever
voted on Roe v. Wade. Although the pro-Roe resolution would have no
legal
force, it is important that the pro-life movement win the vote.
-------------------------------------
Many House members -- including some who usually vote pro-life -- have
unclear positions on Roe v. Wade, so it is important for them to hear
from
pro-life constituents immediately. The message should be, "We strongly
urge you to vote against the expected motion to endorse Roe v. Wade,
also
known as the Harkin Amendment." (The motion is technically called a
"motion to instruct the conferees on S. 1692, the Partial- Birth
Abortion
Ban Act.")
-----------------------
The Harkin resolution endorses without qualification the original 1973
Roe
v. Wade, without acknowledging even the adjustments that the Supreme
Court
itself has made in Roe, such as allowing states to mandate waiting
periods
and curbs on tax-funded abortions.
-------------------
ACTION: Say no to 40,000,000 children killed and millions of women hurt

by abortion on demand! Please contact your member of Congress as soon as

possible by phone or fax and urge strong opposition to the Harkin
resolution. You can find information on Roe v. Wade at
http://www.roevwade.org and you can keep up-to-date on this important
Congressional vote by subscribing to the Pro-Life Infonet at

Congress by calling 202-224-3121.
--------------------------------------------------
Blessings upon you!
