Dear Michael, Sarah, all,

as agreed here are the info from today phone call about interesting sources that we could link/refer or even exchange ideas/effort/objectives?

1. http://www.i3a.org    I ‘ve just become the European liaison and this could bring additional synergies between IPTC and I3A imaging standard association :-)

(SaveMyMemory is today a very HOT topic @ I3A)

2.  http://www.glocal-project.eu/  (event based project) iptc photo metadata and event-ML standard are considered. Alinari is partner.  EU project

3. http://www.paths-project.eu/  (ersonalised paths through digital library collections)  EU project

4. http://www.decipher-research.eu/  EU project on building 3D and VR exhibitions for museum curators and personalized photo exhibitions (EU project too)

If you are simply looking for other sources of keyword lists (not necessarily in LR keyword catalog format), then see the many links to various sources at http://www.controlledvocabulary.com/examples.html

Dear user of the IPTC-PLUS Metadata  Panel for Adobe Bridge:

We have just released version 4 of this panel, please find attached a ZIP package with the panel file, the updated installer script and a ReadMe file.

This panel replaces all previous versions as a maintenance release and fixes this error:

·         processing time values (of date and time fields)  including fractions of a second caused a lock up of the script

The installer script is now able to work with Adobe CS 5.5 installed on your computer and with the 64-bit version of Photoshop on Windows PCs.

You can download this zip file from:

Ever since I loaded ITPC Plus to my computer, I cannot access my own templates;
and am forced to use the ITPC templates which fail to remember my information. I
had my own templates that worked very well, but though I can see that template
folder, since installing ITPC-Plus on my computer, I cannot use my templates. I
am using Photoshop CS5 and Bridge Cs5 on a Windows computer using Windows 7.

Frankly, I am incredibly frustrated by this program and cannot find any
information as to how to uninstall it, and even when I tell Bridge not to use
the ITPC-Plus script, it still uses it. I think ITPC Plus might be great for a
novice using metadata, but I have been using metadata for years and I completely
understand why it is important. If I have to re-create my information every
time I shoot a project, then this is just NOT useful. Please help me figure out
how to uninstall this program.

Laura:

The IPTC-PLUS Toolkit is a Javascript that runs within Bridge.

On page 60 of the Users Guide PDF (in the full download) discusses the Alternative Installation for Expert Users.

If you reverse some of those steps, you can "uninstall" the script that is triggered to open the IPTC-PLUS toolkit.

With Adobe Bridge working, open your "Preferences" menu (under the File menu in the Windows version of Photoshop).

From the left hand menu choose the "Startup Scripts" tab (2nd from bottom)

In the list of Startup scripts there should be one named "IPTC-PLUS Metadata" and the box should be checked.

Uncheck the box, and click the OK button.

Then close and restart Bridge and you should be fine.

Frankly, I am incredibly frustrated by this program and cannot find any information as to how to uninstall it, and even when I tell Bridge not to use the ITPC-Plus script, it still uses it.

How are you telling Bridge not to use the script?

If it continues to run even though you have deactivated the script, then you may need to go in to the Prefs again, and in the Startup Scrips section click on the button to "Reveal scripts" and manually remove it from that folder.

Hope that helps.

The IPTC, the American Association of Advertising Agencies and the Association of National Advertisers have launched http://www.embeddedmetadata.org/ today to encourage the embedding of descriptive and rights based information into digital media files. As photographers, we all should know how important it is for our work to be recognized and properly attributed.

“A picture may be worth 1,000 words, but permanently attached descriptions are worth a lot more as photos travel through the digital world. A campaign has been launched now to embed descriptive and rights information in digital media and to retain it during the whole life cycle."

With the support of numerous trade organizations representing visual arts and photo agencies; the goal of this iniative is to establish the practice of applying descriptions and the copyright status of the content as metadata, and to embed it permanently during the electronic exchange of digital photo, text, audio or video files. This practice is all based on the principles defined by the Embedded Metadata Manifesto as detailed on the web site: www.embeddedmetadata.org

Please let others know, and show your support by adding an "eMM" icon to your site: http://bit.ly/sTUkqk

A new Embedded Metadata Manifesto (EMM) web site has been launched and you can find the five key principles for creating and permanently embedding metadata on it: www.embeddedmetadata.org

We, the site’s main sponsors, the IPTC, the 4As (American Association of Advertising Agencies) and ANA (Association of National Advertisers), invite all photographers to support the EMM as we need evidence that users support the principles of the manifesto, so that we can push for change by software vendors to ensure our workflows are optimised and future proofed.

Here’s how you can help:

-          Display the EMM logo on your web site – there is a guidelines how to do that: http://embeddedmetadata.org/that-site-supports-emm.php#addlogo

-          Post one of your images with embedded metadata and it will be included into the Support Gallery of Images which displays the embedded metadata for each image on an individual web page:
* This is the guideline how to populate the metadata and how to post the image:
http://embeddedmetadata.org/support-how-to-apply-metadata.php
* And this is the Support Gallery of Images:

We are looking forward to the photos contributed by you.

Subject: XMP namespaces within IPTC Extension

Hello,

I'd like to ask a question regarding the use of XMP namespaces in association with IPTC.

I am currently setting up different metadata schemas within a digital asset management system in order to best decribe our resources.

In doing so I am pointing each field to each of the properties in the IPTC Extension at the appropriate namespace URI. For example, http://iptc.org/std/Iptc4xmpExt/2008-02-29/AddModelInfo for the additional model info field.

My query centres on how to represent PLUS properties within the IPTC Extension using this method. Reading the IPTC Photo Metadata: Core 1.1/Extension 1.1 (July 2010) - Doc Rev 1, the XMP namespace area for one of these properties indicates "plus".

Does this mean that I should specify the namespace as: http://ns.useplus.org/ldf/xmp/1.0/ImageSupplier?

Please forgive my ignorance in relation to this and many thanks in advance for any responses.

Hi Benjamin,

first a big thank you for asking before you do the final implementation.

The IPTC Core and the IPTC Extension schemas are sets of metadata properties tailored to the needs of professional photographers. The IPTC claims to be the intellectual owner of this set – but this does not require that all properties are genuine IPTC properties.

For rights metadata the IPTC has established a collaboration with PLUS more than 5 years ago and for that reason the IPTC Extension does not define its genuine Image Supplier property but it (re-)uses the corresponding PLUS property.

Therefore the guideline for implementers is quite simple: take the IPTC Core and Extension specifications [1] literally. For the Image Supplier the spec says on page 36: XMP namespace = plus. The general part of the specs on page 30 defines that “plus” is the prefix for the URL http://ns.useplus.org/ldf/xmp/1.0/ - and the Image Supplier identifier is therefore http://ns.useplus.org/ldf/xmp/1.0/ImageSupplier

In short: you did the right thing in the right way – continue doing this.

Kind regards,

Michael

But I could not find an agenda about the conference until not.

To all group members: you are invited to the Photo Metadata Conference 2012

Finding images is the key to effective photo business. This is the theme of the sixth IPTC Photo Metadata Conference which will be held on 17 May 2012 in London. It will focus on the latest technologies to improve search results and on methods and systems for identifying the rightsholders of an image if the copyright notice is not available. The Conference will be held at the annual Congress of the European picture agency association CEPIC. Details of the Conference can be found at www.phmdc.org including how to register for this industry event. Tweets about it use #phmdc12 as hashtag.

Finding an image online is easy, but finding the ‘right' image, from a site where it can be legally licensed is another matter. Attendees will find out how to tap into the latest search and retrieval technologies to make search results relevant and easy to find.  Use of metadata, keywording, and taxononomies will be discussed, as well as, crowdsourced cataloguing and visual search technologies. Also semantic markup for images on web pages to enhance the results of search engines will be shown at this Conference which is organised by IPTC, the major standardisation body for photo metadata.

The second highlight of the conference will investigate methods of finding image  rightsholders. The orphan works issue looms large for image creators and distributors, with proposals for changes in copyright law under consideration across Europe, and vast numbers of unaccredited images easily found on the internet. How can creators and their agencies protect their copyright while maintaining easy access for their customers? There will be sessions on tracking rightsholders, developments in automated licencing, and recent legal and political developments which may affect the way business is done.

The one day conference offers the chance to hear to expert speakers from around the globe, and to take part in break out discussion sessions on topics vital to the future of the image creation and licensing industry.  It is a must for photographers, image libraries, and all those interested in the future of the image industry.

Subject: XMP to XML translation?

Hi all,

I’m looking for a quick and simple method to transform XMP files into well-formed XML, possibly according to an extremely simplified schema (i.e. effectively a root node and a list of allowed elements from selected namespaces, all with cardinality 0-n).

The use case here is to import XMP data into an XSLT engine I’m using, but the existing software can’t handle the RDF/XML of the raw XMP.

Since the XMP is relatively flat, I thought there might be a standard or at least well-known way to get this stuff into a very simple XML form, from whence it could be input into my XSLT engine (which auto-detects the “schema” of the input data before creating an XSLT to transform it and future uploads to a new schema).

I’ve identified which namespaces need to be included in my pseudo-schema, I just wondered if there are some existing tools, preferably free, which can do the job? Can this be done with more XSLT…?

Dear all,

Thank you in advanced for all the help that I might receive.

I’m a ACDSEE user (pro 5.2) with a catalogue of about 21.000 images. I need at all time to search the catalogue. All my keywords are logged in the IPTC>Content>keywords (due to transfer from Lightroom to acdsee) and everytime I need to make a search it simply takes ages…..or doesn’t even makes the search effectively!

My question is: is there any additional software that I can use to make the search or a tool for the acdsee or….any solution?

Many many thanks for all the great brains out there!

Monica:

It may help to back up a bit and understand what is likely happening with your particular image cataloging program.  I'm not an expert on ACDSEE (pro 5.2) but have looked at previous versions and believe it operates as many other "cataloging" program do.  I'm unaware of any "plug-ins" that would speed it up, however, you may wish to look at your hardware, etc as one means of increasing speed.

With ACDSEE you have to first "import" the images you wish to catalog into the application.  During this import, the program either creates a "thumbnail" (smaller "derivative" version of the original image)  or pulls an embedded JPEG from the image to use as a thumbnail.  It may also ingest the contents of the various metadata already embedded in the image (Exif, IPTC, and XMP for instance -- see http://www.photometadata.org/META-101-metadata-types for more detail on these types of metadata), and will store that text information within it's own internal database.

When you add information to a particular image (or images as part of a batch operation), that information is first added to the internal database.  With some applications it's only written to this internal database, while other apps may automatically then "synchronize" this information with the original image (if it's part of a writable volume -- hard drive, SSD, etc -- not a Read Only storage device like a CDR or DVDR).  With some applications you have to instruct the application to write the information back to the originals at a time of your choosing. I seem to recall this being the way earlier versions of ACDSee worked, but not sure if that is still the case.

When you perform a search within ACDSEE, it is not opening up each of the image files that have already been imported and reading the contents of an IPTC field; rather, it's searching through the fields in its own "internal" database.  The speed of this type of search will depend on the type of database  and how the information was stored. Many applications now use an SQL - Structured Query Language -- database, some of which exist as open source; while other programs use their own proprietary database structure.  Some application databases may also "index" the information in specific fields, and if so, this can make for very quick searches, some even responding as you type in each character.

My guess would be that ACDSee has not indexed the values within the IPTC "Keywords" field, and this is affecting performance.  Their particular database itself may be part of the issue as well.

You don't mention if you are specifically searching one field only, or using a general "search" box in the interface. This can also affect performance, so I would first suggest seeing if there is an "advanced find" of some sort that will allow you to search only specific fields.

Depending on which metadata fields that ACDSee supports, this could make for a substantial difference.  If ACDSee is using IPTC Core, then that schema alone is over 20 + fields.  If the general search box is having to look through the values in every single one of those fields, it will certainly take longer than limiting the search to only the Keywords field.

You don't mention your particular operating system/platform and hardware set-up, so it's also possible that your performance is being limited by an older machine, older version of an OS, insufficient RAM, etc. I would suggest that you check the ACDSee forums and see if anyone can help you benchmark your system and see if an upgrade in OS or Hardware might help.

Otherwise, the other option would require a major shift -- as it would require moving to a different application, or adopting a different application for the "Archiving" portion of your workflow.  There are many other good pieces of software out there, but it's not really possible to make any useful suggestions without understanding your type of work, and specific goals.

Hope that helps.

David

Hi Walter

No, the IPTC-PLUS metadata does not work with Bridge CS6 - yet.

But the built-in File Info panels support the full set of IPTC Core and
IPTC Extension metadata = you can work with all IPTC metadata.

Best regards,

Michael

Hello everyone,

I’m looking for the proper way to mark up image licensing metadata in HTML: Some minimal “semantic web” markup that would tell search engines “you can license this image”, or “you can use it freely for non-commercial purposes”. (I know that search engines currently don’t read this information…)

I’m new to RDFa and microdata, but have done a little research and written it up in a blog post: http://www.strehle.de/tim/weblog/archives/2012/05/31/1494

Do you have experience turning photo metadata into semantic HTML markup? Is there anything you can recommend?

(I’ve seen the http://www.iptc.org/std-dev/photometadata/examples/RDFaPages/demoWebpage-RDFa.html demo page already, it was a great inspiration!)

Thanks in advance,

Tim Strehle
