When I enter information in the credit field in Photo Mechanic, this information shows in the 'Provider' field in CS4, and indeed the credit field as such misses in CS4.

No worse than entering information in the "Object Name" field in Photo Mechanic and having it show up in the "Title" field of Photoshop. ;-)
Which is say, that the problem you are experiencing is simply a "mapping" issue. Over the years some developers have chosen to come up with their own "labels" for some of the IPTC fields. Provided that you know what the field is to be used for, it's not a problem, but when you move to another application things can get confusing.
That is why, about 8 or 9 years ago, I began creating an IPTC Mapped fields chart to assist others in understanding and comprehending this issue. When the IPTC Core was released in 2005, I updated this chart, and part of it is even included as an appendix to the IPTC Core "users guide."
You'll find that document at: http://www.iptc.org/std/Iptc4xmpCore/1.0/documentation/Iptc4xmpCore_1.0-doc-CpanelsUserGuide_13.pdf
or

The most recent version of the IPTC Core Mapped fields chart can be found on my website at: IPTC Core Mapped Fields ( http://www.controlledvocabulary.com/imagedatabases/iptc_core_mapped.pdf )
I would also encourage you to contact each of the developers whose applications you use and let them know that it would be in everyone interest for them to either update their application to use the field label names as recommended by the IPTC, or to provide a means by which you the user can choose which "set" of field label names you wish to use. At this point there are the label names for the IPTC Information Interchange Model (IIM, often referred to as the "legacy" version), the IPTC Core 1.0, and the IPTC Core 1.1 and IPTC Extension 1.0.
Hope that helps.
