The paper might be of interest for reading/studying which is mostly what I do with regard to SNe.
I can see from the title why you would think sn 2008es is supposed to be observably bright. But I think this refers to its intrinsic or absolute brightness (not apparent magnitude).
Type II-L seemed unusual.
