Subject: problem with qmail-syslog and received message count
grantsupp
Send Email Send Email

I am using isoqlog 2.2 and qmail-syslog. There are two qmail servers
logging via syslog to a central server. I have one domain on the
system called weboms.com. This central server is running isoqlog.

For some reason, the number of Received messages for each domain is
not calculated. Although under the "General" section, it shows 59
Received messages.

Also under the "General" section, the number of Sent messages (1,060)
is way too high. If I look under the weboms.com section, I see only 3
sent messages.

In the General statistics for Today, I see
"weboms.com-info@..." under "Top 100 Receiver". I think the
problem is that isoqlog is not evaluating "weboms.com-info@..."
as "info@...". This appears to only happen when using qmail-syslog.

I'm also seeing similar behavior on a differnet server, although this
server is using qmail-multilog, execpt the domain contains a hyphen.
In the general statistics for Today, I see
"1.com-mark.pollvo@...", which should be evaulated as just
"mark.pollvo@..."

Can anyone help?

Thank you.

I just realized yahoo groups truncated my e-mail address examples
above. Since pictures often speak volumes, here is an image of the
issue I am experiencing: http://63.99.213.249:8080/isoqlog.gif

I appreciate any help anyone can give me.

isoqlog evaluate weboms.com-info@... as info@... normally.
Can you send me some samples from your log files?
By the way, i could not open http://63.99.213.249:8080/isoqlog.gif page.

Thank you for your reply. I have been testing this issue further and
found the following log entries will increment both the Sent and
Received message count under the General category by 1. These are the
log lines generated from sending 1 message to hotmail.com. I would
expect just the Sent count to increase. Am I wrong in my thinking?

Here are the log entries when a message is received. This increments
both the Sent and Received message count under the General category by
1. I would expect just the Received count to increase. Also, when I
view the per-domain statistics for weboms.com, the Received count is
0.

Hello all,

I'm new to this isoqlog.

In my qmail installation, i have log files in different directories:-

/var/log/qmail/qmail-smtpd/
/var/log/qmail/qmail-send/

Is there a way to club this log file into a single logfile & further run isoqlog.

With warm regards,

As far as I know, isoqlog only needs to read the /var/log/qmail/qmail-send/ file
to compute all statistics.

Hi,

We talked about isoqlog message counts in this list so many times.
I decided to discuss about new and correct isoqlog parsing and message
counting algorithm, so i need your suggestions about this issue.
qmail logs are really very hard to follow. How can we interpret log
messages.

Example 1:let's look at following log.

@40000000422f9d1f14ff53fc info msg 386: bytes 5596 from <admin@...>
qp 68022 uid 0
@40000000422f9d1f211a8684 starting delivery 24: msg 386 to remote
user@...

This message is in queue now, but it may be delivered after five days later
(or may not be delivered -queulifetime-) so we have to keep 5 day's logs to
get status of this message(failed, delivered etc). is it acceptable or not?

There are alot of questions like that should be clear.

Let's discuss these and then we will change isoqlog according to your ideas.
Best Regards.

Yes, I think if we need to keep 5 days of logs to get accurate message
counts then the trade off is worth it. It just needs to be clearly
written in the documentation that 5 days of logs is required.

Actually, wouldn't that depend on the queue lifetime? For example, on
my system an email will continue trying to send for 7 days. So wouldn't
we need seven days worth of logs? Come to think of it, we'd need eight
to catch any messages that were sent at the very end of the day. Hrm.

Just a thought...

Hello all,
I have just installed isoqlog-2.2.1 for a Plesk server.

$ cat /usr/local/etc/isoqlog.conf
#isoqlog Configuration file

logtype     = "qmail-syslog"
logstore    = "/home/shantanu/maillog"
domainsfile = "/usr/local/etc/isoqlog.domains"          #
outputdir   = "/var/www/html/isoqlog"                   # html output directory
htmldir     = "/usr/local/share/isoqlog/htmltemp"
langfile    = "/usr/local/share/isoqlog/lang/english"
hostname    = "enderunix.org"

maxsender   = 1000
maxreceiver = 1000
maxtotal    = 1000
maxbyte     = 100000

Then I populated the /usr/local/etc/isoqlog.domains
I ran isoqlog which said that output is generated in /var/www/html/isoqlog
But when I see the output all Sent, Received, Total, Size are 0
This is true for all domains. This server is heavily loaded so this is not
true that all sizes are 0.

What is the thing I left out here.

Hi,

I am new to qmail. My application needs to send mail based on a job
scheduler.
Each job roughly needs to send 2,00,000 mails. There might be multiple jobs
running parllely.

Assume if there are two jobs job-1 and job-2 running parllely, then log
messages of both jobs will get mixed up.
If i need to find the list of sucessful mails sent for a job-1. I will need
job-id to be embedded in the log message.

Is there any way to customize log messages and add additional.

Or is there any work around for this.

regards,
B. Srivatshan.

Do the stats calculate the external linked images/files that are in the email as well? or just the message body/headers? Although this client of mine has a 40,000 person email list, it should not be doing 7GB in 2 days.... or could it? What could be the reason the stats are so high? What does isoqlog take into account when processing logs. I am using postfix/dbmail with a mysql backend.

Any help would be appreciated.

Hello there!

Thanks for isoqlog. I'm using it for qmail. I don't know
if my problem is a bug or should be considered a kind of
"feature".

Ususally, the senders report includes addresses mostly
from my domains (those which are hosted on my machine).
But it might happen that I receive a lot of email from an
external site, and that "sender" is being included in the
"senders reports".

I understand that, and maybe that is the behavior one may
expect. But I really don't want that, I would like to see
senders only if they are of one of my domains.

I can work out a patch or solution, if necessary. But I
wanted to ask first. Maybe this is a bug, or just the way
isoqlog works.

Thanks a lot!

Dear Isoqlog developers,

I am currently operating and maintaining an Internet Services Portal
(www.educa.madrid.org), among them mail relaying through qmail.

Congratulations for your excellent mail traffic analisys tool.

However, we've got a problem using it: Every Monday's statistics are
missing (they don't appear in the report list). Eventually, some
other days are missing too.

We execute Isoqlog everyday at 22.30 h by a script which previously
collects and concat the qmail logs (qmail-send and qmail-smtpd). It
works properly almost everyday.

Qmail logs rotation is executed precisely on mondays at 00.01h, but
we have checked this operation is correct.

Would you please give us any idea about what is happening, please?

Thanks a lot
