Job Description:

Responsible for developing device clients for Visto's product line using
C/C++/Java (J2ME) on Pocket PC, Brew, or Symbian platforms.  These clients
support email and PIM Data sync between the device and the enterprise.

Skills and Required Experience:

*  2+ years using J2ME to develop applications on mobile device, handheld
(wireless phones, PDA) platforms or 2+  years applications development on

While the CDC/FP specifications are complete, I
am not sure whether the TCK is avaialalble to
certify the product. Without the Personal Basis Profile
or Personal Profiles, I am also not sure how useful
a J2ME CDC configuration is.<br><br>I suspect
Insignia, and other's are simply waiting for customer
demand. All of the J2ME focus to date, including that
from Sun, has been for the CLDC (much to many people's
confusion, not understanding there are two very different
configurations in terms of capabilities) configurations. Perhaps
this is because Personal Java already fills the
need.<br><br>Anyway, Insignia announced a Beta version of a CDC/FP
implementation last week, along with news around licensing the
technology from

On this same topic of developing clients capable
of both online and offline operation (albeit
potentially reduced offline operation) are there any proposed
or available API's, patterns, frameworks, etc. that
deal with determining network connection status, and
appropriately redirect an applications invocation of local vs.
network objects as well as relying solely on local
authentication, persistence mechanisms, naming services, etc.
etc.?

CDC specifies it's target as devices with network
connections. While I suspect many of the CDC target devices
will have network capability and often be connected, I
also suspect some of these devices, mobile in nature,
will frequently be without network connectivity. Smart
phones, PDA's and such. Living in a country the physical
size of Canada really brings this point.<br><br>Are
there any technologies/profiles already being
proposed/developed similar to JNLP (Java Network Launching Protocol
JSR-56) that would be suitable for these CDC devices? I
think the critical functionality would be the caching
of applications/applets, and automatic updating of
client jars. Web Start (JNLP) as it first appears is
overkill, and does not seem feasible upon first impression
just due to size of the download and platform
dependency (??).<br><br>Could/would such a profile be a J2ME
profile, or with some other functionality/capability might
such an API find it's way into J2EE as a client
container of some kind? Are there any plans for some kind
of J2ME compatible J2EE client
containers?<br><br>Thanks for any insight or thoughts.

Will Java be successful on PDA's? How will
Microsoft's lack of support affect Java's success in devices
with MS operating systems? Does it matter? Perhaps
Palm will up their capabilities or Linux might take
off.<br><br>That's part of the beauty isn't it? Develop for Java and
the OS and hardware platform don't matter - assuming
a VM.<br><br>Any thoughts?

Mass market PDA's with Personal Java "off the
shelf" are beginning to appear.<br><br>HP began
packaging ChaiVM (their own (not Sun Certified) VM with
Jornada's over a year ago. However, to date support is
limited, and it is not loaded out of the box. According to
HP's website, "HP ChaiVM included in the CD is trial
software and not supported by HP except through devnet..."
<br><br>At JavaOne in June 2001 Compaq announced the
availability of Insignia's Sun Authorized JVM, Jeode (EVM,
Embedded Virtual Machine) for the iPaq 3600 series. It

we will see more mass market PDA's with

the time for this club has come.

One of the reasons I started this club was the
lack of information or resources available for J2ME
Connected Device Configuration. I would like to keep this
club focused on J2ME CDC and related Personal/Embedded
Java topics. There are numerous clubs, listservers,
and newsgroups dedicated to CLDC. Links to those can
be provided if you are having trouble locating them.
Let's keep this club focused on J2ME CDC.

I'd like to see how this club evolves before
putting any real restrictions on the content of posts,
other than the obvious restrictions listed in the Yahoo
Terms of Service.<br><br>I hope the focus becomes
technically slanted, with members offering advise with
respect to design decisions, problem resolutions, product
reviews, and solution exchanges. However, at least in the
beginning, general discussions or debates of related topics,
related product or service announcments will also be
encouraged.<br><br>More as this club evolves......
