profiling with Visual VM
most of the previously standalone tools JConsole, jstat, jinfo, jstack, and jmap
are part of Java VisualVM. Java VisualVM federates these tools to obtain data
from the JVM software, then re-organizes and presents the information
graphically, to enable you to view different data about multiple Java
applications uniformly, whether they are running locally or on remote machines.
Furthermore, developers can extend Java VisualVM to add new functionality by
creating and posting plug-ins to the tool's built-in update center.

One of the biggest reason why any Java Developer developing on or
running Linux should check out Gentoo. Why others have not
adapted/ported the following command is beyond me

It's been the second Wednesday of the month for the year I believe. I
got the Jax LUG weeks mixed up a month or so back. There was some oddity

Not sure what extra time there will be in December. Actually have a

I joined the mailing list about a month ago because I want to get back into
programming, job wise.  I haven't had a programming job for a number of years,
so I feel as though I'm starting over at ground zero.

I'm looking for suggestions on how I can get myself up to a reasonable level of
competence in Java.  What would you recommend?  I'm open to any ideas, from
self-taught methods to paid training and/or certification/degree paths.

I think its easier to learn using an IDE. I have programmed with a text editor
and IDE, with the text editor you spend time getting the imports right,
syntax...  Why not let the IDE help you with that and the code completion helps
you learn the language faster in my opinion.

of grief over the years trying out code samples that yanked resources in
from a dozen unnamed packages (imports omitted in the examples to save
space).

However, somewhere not too far behind my hatred for the "All You Have to
Do Is..." and  "Git 'R Dun!" plagues upon the profession are the all too
common questions that start with "I'm using Eclipse/NetBeans/IntelliJ...
and I .... how do I...???" and proceed to illustrate that they've dug
themselves into a great big hole because the IDE did all the thinking
for them and they actually have no clue whatsoever as to what's really
going on.

I see a lot of those on the JavaRanch, and sometimes I just have to turn
and walk away, because otherwise I'll spontaneously combust. IDEs are a
great blessing and a great curse. They manage my imports, keep me from
having to maintain flawless copies of tens of thousands of APIs in my
poor deteriorating brain, and allow me do extensively refactor projects
without having to spend a week getting them back into compilable shape.

The curse is that they exacerbate the "AYHTDI" situation by allowing
managers to dump sophisticated projects on people whose ability to
create "Hello, World!" is questionable, but who'll work for 15
rupees/hour. People whose lack of understanding results in shaky
software abominations whose poor quality drag down the reputation of the
profession as a whole. I think I've said it before, but it's the IT
equivalent of buying Chinese pet food from Wal-Mart.

And I freely confess that I, too have ended up with pretty messed-up
results when I tried to use tools like that without proper training in
how to use the tool. Even when I knew the underlying technology.

Which is one of the other reasons why starting off with an IDE is widely
disparaged. You double your educational load by having to learn the IDE
while at the same time that you're learning the language. And things
like "press Ctrl-space to auto-complete" aren't exactly intuitively
obvious. Especially if you've never dealt with auto-completion. I must
have used Eclipse for 2 years before I finally wised up and started
using Ctrl+R to get quick access to resources.

I'll admit it. If a new and radically creative computer virus came along
and made it impossible to write software with anything but an
old-fashioned line-at-a-time editor on a Teletype, I'd regret losing the
IDEs. But I managed to write interrupt service routines for IBM
mainframes with nothing better. It was the core-dump debugging that was
the real pain in the fundament.

Of course, life isn't all gravy these days, either. I'll rant some other
time on people whose projects can ONLY be compiled and built in an IDE.
Set up exactly identical to the way THEIR computer had customized the
IDE.

So, ideally, what I'd recommend would be to use Windows Notepad and the
command line and defer the IDE until the basics of language, runtime,
servers and frameworks were well understood. It's just that I know how
difficult that can be.

Hello all,

Our next JaxJUG meeting will be held on Wednesday, December 9th (location and
other details will follow).

The highlight of the meeting is a presentation by a special guest - Blaine
Mincey, an Architect at JBoss (a division of Red Hat).

Presentation Outline:

How are you integrating and orchestrating your services? Is your current
solution easy to use and cost-effective? If these questions leave you scratching
your head, you need to think about what's available in the upcoming JBoss
Enterprise SOA Platform v5.0.

The JBoss Enterprise SOA Platform is a flexible, standards-based platform for
integrating business services/ events and automating business processes. It
enables business process automation by orchestrating application components and
services running on JBoss Enterprise Middleware or any other application
platform that supports key SOA standards.

In this session you'll learn how to leverage the new features and functionality
to rapidly, and cost-effectively develop, deploy and manage SOA-based solutions
that solve real problems now.

Presenter Bio

Blaine Mincey has over 13 years of experience designing and developing
enterprise systems across a variety of fields including retail, transportation,
bioinformatics, electronic commerce, and location based services. A JBoss
proponent for many years, he is a member of the Atlanta Java Users Group and the
Atlanta Chapter of the International Association of Software Architects. When
not behind a computer, he can be found running around the soccer field and
spending time with his wife and 6 month old son. Blaine holds a BA from Mercer
University, MBA from Shorter College, and is currently completing an MS in
Applied Computer Science from Kennesaw State University.
