The JBoss Enterprise SOA Platform is a flexible, standards-based platform for integrating business services/ events and automating business processes. It enables business process automation by orchestrating application components and services running on JBoss Enterprise Middleware or any other application platform that supports key SOA standards.

In this session you'll learn how to leverage the new features and functionality to rapidly, and cost-effectively develop, deploy and manage SOA-based solutions that solve real problems now.

Presenter Bio

Blaine Mincey has over 13 years of experience designing and developing enterprise systems across a variety of fields including retail, transportation, bioinformatics, electronic commerce, and location based services. A JBoss proponent for many years, he is a member of the Atlanta Java Users Group and the Atlanta Chapter of the International Association of Software Architects. When not behind a computer, he can be found running around the soccer field and spending time with his wife and 6 month old son. I'm conflicted about that one. Unfortunately, I've experienced my share
of grief over the years trying out code samples that yanked resources in
from a dozen unnamed packages (imports omitted in the examples to save
space).

However, somewhere not too far behind my hatred for the "All You Have to
Do Is..." and "Git 'R Dun!" plagues upon the profession are the all too
common questions that start with "I'm using Eclipse/NetBeans/IntelliJ...
and I .... how do I...???" and proceed to illustrate that they've dug
themselves into a great big hole because the IDE did all the thinking
for them and they actually have no clue whatsoever as to what's really
going on.

I see a lot of those on the JavaRanch, and sometimes I just have to turn
and walk away, because otherwise I'll spontaneously combust. IDEs are a
great blessing and a great curse. They manage my imports, keep me from
having to maintain flawless copies of tens of thousands of APIs in my
poor deteriorating brain, and allow me do extensively refactor projects
without having to spend a week getting them back into compilable shape.

The curse is that they exacerbate the "AYHTDI" situation by allowing
managers to dump sophisticated projects on people whose ability to
create "Hello, World!" is questionable, but who'll work for 15
rupees/hour. People whose lack of understanding results in shaky
software abominations whose poor quality drag down the reputation of the
profession as a whole. I think I've said it before, but it's the IT
equivalent of buying Chinese pet food from Wal-Mart.

And I freely confess that I, too have ended up with pretty messed-up
results when I tried to use tools like that without proper training in
how to use the tool. Even when I knew the underlying technology.

Which is one of the other reasons why starting off with an IDE is widely
disparaged. You double your educational load by having to learn the IDE
while at the same time that you're learning the language. And things
like "press Ctrl-space to auto-complete" aren't exactly intuitively
obvious. Especially if you've never dealt with auto-completion. I must
have used Eclipse for 2 years before I finally wised up and started
using Ctrl+R to get quick access to resources.

I'll admit it. If a new and radically creative computer virus came along
and made it impossible to write software with anything but an
old-fashioned line-at-a-time editor on a Teletype, I'd regret losing the
IDEs. But I managed to write interrupt service routines for IBM
mainframes with nothing better. It was the core-dump debugging that was
the real pain in the fundament.

Of course, life isn't all gravy these days, either. I'll rant some other
time on people whose projects can ONLY be compiled and built in an IDE.
Set up exactly identical to the way THEIR computer had customized the
IDE.

So, ideally, what I'd recommend would be to use Windows Notepad and the
command line and defer the IDE until the basics of language, runtime,
servers and frameworks were well understood. It's just that I know how
difficult that can be.

I think its easier to learn using an IDE. I have programmed with a text editor
and IDE, with the text editor you spend time getting the imports right,
syntax... Why not let the IDE help you with that and the code completion helps
you learn the language faster in my opinion.

I am assuming you are starting from very little to no java experience.  My recommended order of reading/doing would be:

1) First cup - http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/getStarted/cupojava/    (basically the Hello World tutorial)
2) Sun Tutorials - http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/   (Start in the "Trails Covering the Basics Section", move to others depending on interest)
3) Try to write some programs - trivial is fine

My biggest piece of advice is to *not* use an IDE at first.  Basically, try and make it through the tutorials using only the JDK tools manually and a text editor with some syntax highlighting - learn the basics before using an IDE to make some of the basics easier/hidden.  Then go learn to do all of this with an IDE when you want enhanced productivity.  Stray away from the JDK distributions that have Netbeans prebundled (or install it and ignore it completely at first).

After that, the next steps depend on what kind of programming you want to do... HTTP/Web Development,  Swing development for GUIs, etc. and then find a non trivial program to start or work on.

If you want to reach out to the community for help/advice here are some places to check out:

1) Here!  The volume of Q&A stuff on here isn't great, but when there is a question, most often someone jumps on it during the same day
2) IRC -  I frequent irc://chat.freenode.net/##java .  There are various other channels on irc that are for java related technologies.  There is also a (very small) subset of JaxJug folks hanging out at irc://chat.freenode.net/#jaxjug .
3) Sun Forums - http://forums.sun.com/index.jspa
4) Stack Overflow - http://stackoverflow.com/

And some reading/rss feeds pay attention to:

1)  Javalobby:  http://java.dzone.com/
2)  Dzone - http://www.dzone.com/links/index.html
3)  The Server Side - http://www.theserverside.com/

Or at least those are the three I pay attention to most in java land to stay up to date.

I joined the mailing list about a month ago because I want to get back into
programming, job wise. I haven't had a programming job for a number of years,
so I feel as though I'm starting over at ground zero.

I'm looking for suggestions on how I can get myself up to a reasonable level of
competence in Java. What would you recommend? I'm open to any ideas, from
self-taught methods to paid training and/or certification/degree paths.

Thanks in advance,

Melinda

Jason,

The JaxJUG meets every second Wednesday of the month, so if you have a way to set this up in your calendar, please do so.

Having said that, I should still send out the meeting announcements long enough in advance, and I apologize for the 'last-minute' announcement I made for the November meeting.

I believe we have an 'external' speaker lined up for December, but we will have more lightning sessions next year; all three subjects you had suggested sound interesting to me - you may as well pick the one you like best (or do more than one subject!).

I am sorry you had to miss yesterday's meeting, I have thoroughly enjoyed it. The presentations from the meeting will soon be uploaded to the JaxJUG's web site.

Regards,

Eyal

Eyal + William + Folks at Taleo + Anyone else who helps organize the meetings,

Would it be possible to get more of a heads up on what dates are set for JUG meetings.  I'm often on-call or committed for work on certain nights and I'm not really able to negotiate switching those out on short notice.  I had thought previously we were doing the first Wednesday of each month, so I left last Wednesday wide open.  I'm committed for some things tonight so I can't attend.

If we do lightning talks again for December. I'll be happy to present on something then.  Potential topics I wouldn't mind presenting on would be

1) Mule ESB
2) Project Lombok (although this video pretty much shows it off well enough:  http://projectlombo k.org/ )
3) Gradle

Whatcha think?

It's been the second Wednesday of the month for the year I believe. I
got the Jax LUG weeks mixed up a month or so back. There was some oddity
one month with like the 1st being a Wednesday or something like that. So
what seemed like the first, was really the second.

Not sure what extra time there will be in December. Actually have a
presenter arranged ahead of time. Didn't want to release details there
to distract from tonight's/this month's meeting. Also needed to discuss
it a bit with Eyal and maybe announce it at this meeting.

The November JaxJUG meeting will be held this Wednesday.

The meeting will consist of 'Lightning Talks', i.e. 2-3 short presentations in
relevant topics (something along the lines of the 'Scala Primer' presentation
given by Chris Lewis a few meetings ago).

If any of you is interested in making a 'Lightning Talk' for the meeting, please
contact me as soon as possible. It can be about something you have done or
encountered recently, and should not require much preparation.

Regards,
Eyal

User Groups: If you live near a major metropolitan area, it's easy to get
involved in the local user groups that are there. Most user groups meet once a
month, so they don't consume too many evenings when your family expects you to
be home. Don't be a passive participant; get involved. Talk about what you've
been learning in your spare time. Help organize the group. Get to know the other
people in the group.
