Thanks for your encouraging reply Neependra. Although I may not be
able to attend the LUG meets, I wish this LUG the very best.
Members at jabalpur please do the needful ASAP as the date proposed by
Neependra is not far. Also all colleges would be in the middle of
exams i believe. Some kind of permanent place would be required for
the meets even if they happen once in 2 months.

Yes,most of the users are coming from a Red Hat or Fedora background
but LUG is not bound to a particular distribution. Its a platform where
people can talk about open source in general, share their knowledge,
have install fests etc.
I apologize if I passed the wrong message earlier.

Yes, every one uses different distribution according to their
convenience/needs.Currently I am using Fedora and I just wanted to
share the the things which we can do with it.

No problem.
Having a LUG meet at engineering college will be much more fruitful.
Girish mentioned me about the Institution of Engineers, Opp. RTO.
http://www.ieindia.org/comm/jaba.htm.
I have few earlier experiences in convincing engineering college etc.
for such an events, which were not good.
I thought maximum of us are out of Jabalpur, so it will difficult to
arrange for the venue. If someone is willing to take the responsibility
for the alternate venue then that will be helpful.

Hi,
Its good to see that this LUG is awakening slowly. I hope the momentum
would continue as things progress.
Please refer my previous posts on this group. This is the right time to
bring a philosophy and broad guidelines for this group to flourish in
the community way and not be tied to any commercial or monopolistic
interests the M$ way.
This meet as it is happening after a long long time is all the more
significant as the purpose of this LUG is to be fully understood by
one and all so as to meaningfully use it for all community based
activities.
I hope all new entrants would agree with me.Since most of the users
will be coming from a red hat or fedora background i can understand
the inclination towards it ..
But that is never the end of the road and in GNU/Linux and the open
source initiative there is abundant scope of diversity which stands
for the freedom of its community, developers and users included. With
someone like Pushpendra who is into Free BSD or me who started with
Red Hat once upon a time but now moved on to Debian for all my
personal needs. Although I work on commercial UNIX for my living. I
retain the right to use my preferred OS at home :).
In the best interests of the LUG suggest we have a neutral venue for
the meet possibly a place of learning such as an engineering college
or something similar.
Neependra it would be better if the posts make a consensus before any
unilateral declaration on the mailing list because we do not want this
LUG to go down.
I hope this would be taken care of in all coming endeavors.
Best Wishes

Hello All,
Mr. Vikas Naidu has offered his place for the event.
He is a Red Hat training partner and playing an important role in
Jabalpur to spread Linux awareness.
He is also willing to host regular LUG events.
His institute is in middle of the city, which will be accessible to all.
The address:-

Hello All,
This might be my first mail in this group...don't ask me where I have
been till now..:)
Let me first introduce my self. My name is Neependra Khare and I did
my engineering from Khalsa engineering college,JBP in 2004. Currently
I am working with Red Hat in their Pune office.
I have always been in touch with Mr. Girish Shukla. He is great person.
He is the one who introduced me to the world of "Open Source" in my
college days.I will always be thankful to him.
From the previous threads I see members of the Jabalpur LUG are
putting their best efforts to revive the group.
I would like to thank Pushpendra and Ravi for this.
I would like to share my four years of industry experience with you
all, when I will be there.
I also did my engineering from Jabalpur few years back and I know the
student community out there.
Maximum of them even don't know why they are doing things, which they
are doing now.
We can not blame the students for this as they follow their
predecessors. Also the environment around them plays an important role.
Things are changing and students are becoming more and more aware but
the count of those students is very less.
I believe local LUG can accelerate this.
I also think that Fedora can be the platform on which we can count on.
http://fedoraproject.org/
It is built by people across the globe who work together as a
community and as being in Red Hat in know how much hard work goes
behind the scene.
I would like to invite you all for the LUG meet in Jabalpur on 17th
June. Please have look at following for more info:-
http://apnajabalpur.com/fedora/
The venue is not decided yet as we need to make arrangements according
to the registered participants.
Make sure you register for the event.
Also let others know about the event so that we can get maximum out it.
I will be bringing some fedora goodies which we can distribute to the
participants.
Any comments and suggestions are welcome.
Cheers,
Neependra Khare

Hello all,
Firstly, a formal meeting announcement:
Event: ILUG-Delhi meeting
Date: Fri., May 9th
Time: 6.30pm
Agenda: o Brainstorming for working with NIXI. Please
see details below.
Participants: All on this list.
Venue: BB/3G, DDA flats, Munirka.
Contact: Me (9868527992)
We had an interesting meeting today with some people from
NIXI, the National Internet Exchange of India, which is now
set up as a not-for-profit company. Briefly, NIXI wishes to
play the role of a bridge between industry, government, and
the FOSS community, and has certain advantages over normal
government agencies when it comes to funding projects in this
area.
Here are some ideas mooted from their side. Please note
that these are open to people from anywhere in India, and
they would like to see country-wide participation:
1. Preparing for roll-out of internationalised top-level
domain names, i.e., web URLs entirely in Indian languages.
ICANN should be approving this in some 6 months time, so
NIXI wants people to participate in an experimental setup
on a private (to India) network which can go public on the
Internet on ICANN approval. This work would include the
preparation of a write-up on potential issues involving
canonical representations for Unicode names, phishing and
other security loopholes, etc. Sarai might be hosting an
informal seminar to introduce this topic, in a week or
two.
2. ipv6 roll-out: NIXI would like to have a parallel ipv6
network in 1-2 months time. They have already done training
and awareness sessions for ipv6 routing, but largely using
proprietary tools. They would like community folk to hold
training sessions for (a) MCA-level students, and
(b) technical folk in small/medium enterprises, universities,
or other institutions.
3. Software for, and management of .in domain name registry:
Currently, they use proprietary software, and databases,
and would like to switch to open-source alternatives.
4. Community participation in the Internet Governance Forum
(IGF) meeting to be held in Hyderabad from 3-6 Dec., 2008:
http://www.intgovforum.org/ NIXI wants the community to be
there, as this is supposed to be a meeting for public
comment, and I think that it is important that we take
part. In particular, names are being solicited for
be part of the advisory group, and the deadline for that
is May 21st. For more on the IGF, please see
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_Governance_Forum
5. Of particular interest to IndLinux is that NIXI is willing
to (a) fund localisation work carried out by distributed
community groups in the country, (b) fund projects aimed
at polishing open-source Indian language tools, and deploying
them, e.g., making sure that OpenOffice, and Mozilla
Indian language packs get built, and distributed, and
(c) provide bandwidth, and hosting to such open-source
projects.
6. Deployment of Indian language, and other open-source
software developed in India, and/or targeted at an Indian
population. Their examples were Hindawi, Dhvani, etc.
The goal here would be to (a) put together software that
demonstrates the use, and (b) convince people using
proprietary alternatives to switch.
7. Survey of sites in the .in domain: Someone to carry out
a study of .in sites (which are currently some 4.5 lakh
in number), categorise them, and give awards to the best
sites in various categories, e.g., best Hindi/Indian
language blogging site, best open-source site, etc.
8. Rework syllabi at elementary, and middle school levels
to replace references to proprietary applications with
generic teaching, and/or references to open-source
alternatives.
9. Bring your own ideas: NIXI is also very interested in
hearing about your ideas for possible open-source
projects. Please feel free to contact us at Sarai,
or to directly get in touch with Mr. Rajesh Aggarwal,
IAS, Additional CEO, NIXI, or Mr. Ajay Tripathi,
Technical Officer, NIXI. (Their email addresses are
in the list of recipients.)

Gora

I had shared some of these inputs published in LFY last year, and I re-share
them here:
1.It is observed that LUG is mostly confined to students and mentors
discussing basic things about Linux Installation, the ideas of FOSS,etc. and
the loop sticks till the students pass out for jobs or mentors stop being
active. There should be a system wherein, the members continue their
participation, even once they are no longer students and give back their bit
to the community and help create innovators and not just Linux Users.
2.The revival measures have a set of issues. e.g. as prashant had suggested
before, of merging the two groups, however, there was no response as there
is nobody left around to respond, so what do we merge? There are 2 LUGs in
Indore, the older one having senior professionals and is very low activity,
like ours, the other being new and confined to students re-inventing the
wheel with loads of messages. There is a need to remove this gap of
continuity as senior members prefer to discuss "the issues relating to
OpenXML standards" while youngsters prefer something like "figuring out how
to configure".
3. I suggest to have the website of LUG developed, starting with LOGO and
other stuff. If any required support like Linux Hosting, etc. is required, I
am willing to arrange the same, however, I will appreciate if other members
coordinate with the development and get it into shape.
4. Also, to re-start with, *I request all existing members to re-introduce
themselves please* mentioning their present areas of expertise and how they
can participate. For e.g. someone with expertise in SysAdmin can volunteer
to post about latest trends on SysAdmin.
5. Another idea is to put up posters/notices in colleges which I used to do
when I was there.
Its good to see the group getting back to life and these are my 2pence to
the same.

Girish

Do You Yahoo!?
Tired of spam? Yahoo! Mail has the best spam protection around

Hi all,
I got the words, and i am on it nowwards. Currently i have over 100 students
from various engineering and other technical collages. I can start some campus
activities but any suggestion, what kind of activities we should start? I mean
some thing really new, not all that old stuff like telling them linux is the
safest thing... we must give our audience something what they really need but
dont know its there.
What people do on there PC these days is
Internet surfing
Play MP3
Watch Movies
make presentations and word documents for their collage activities.
And yes last but not the least gaming.
Can we do all these things on linux, better then Windows?
Well linux can be a good thing for developers like me (coz its a bit easy then
my FreeBSD) but not everyone uses their machine for software and web
development. For most of them its just a gaming stuff.
May be such people are not our target audience but we must have something for
everyone.
So what are we planning to introduce? The only suggestion I have for it is, it
should not be very fancy (or technical in other words) it should be something
everyone can understand and something they can enjoy.
I hope you wont mind my language. :)

**Thats the reason i believe there is less involvement in it. We
**should create a community where new members can take charge as old
**faces move out and the community keeps evolving rather than dying.
**For this we can make a common binding guideline for this group to
**grow and evolve and maintain it outside the current yahoo group if
**that is feasible.

I had shared some of these inputs published in LFY last year, and I
re-share
them here:
1.It is observed that LUG is mostly confined to students and mentors
discussing basic things about Linux Installation, the ideas of
FOSS,etc. and
the loop sticks till the students pass out for jobs or mentors stop being
active. There should be a system wherein, the members continue their
participation, even once they are no longer students and give back
their bit
to the community and help create innovators and not just Linux Users.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
**The innovators part can only be done by programmers. Rest of the
**people may help in documentation or similar stuffs which an average
**person can do or implementing available solutions.
**I am not an innovator but I have been using Linux only on my
**personal computer since I bought my own computer 2 years back
**(Compaq Presario V2000 working with Wi-fi on Linksys WRT54G router
**on Debian 4 etch updated to latest including volatile.debian.org).
**Because I do not believe in piracy :-) .Never done a dual boot
**with windows since i bought it with free DOS. That is my way of
**giving respect to the Linux OS and community which they rightly
**deserve..
---------------------------------------------------------------------
2.The revival measures have a set of issues. e.g. as prashant had
suggested
before, of merging the two groups, however, there was no response as there
is nobody left around to respond, so what do we merge? There are 2 LUGs in
Indore, the older one having senior professionals and is very low
activity,
like ours, the other being new and confined to students re-inventing the
wheel with loads of messages. There is a need to remove this gap of
continuity as senior members prefer to discuss "the issues relating to
OpenXML standards" while youngsters prefer something like "figuring
out how
to configure".
---------------------------------------------------------------------
**Yes if we define that this group is for initial members only and the
**mature can move to relevant groups that should be fine and harms in
**no way. That is the way things work... different lists for different
**interests..
---------------------------------------------------------------------
3. I suggest to have the website of LUG developed, starting with LOGO and
other stuff. If any required support like Linux Hosting, etc. is
required, I
am willing to arrange the same, however, I will appreciate if other
members
coordinate with the development and get it into shape.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
**No harm in contributing but people at ground zero actually matter to
**keep this group alive and kicking and hence a need to re-align it
**meaningfully..
---------------------------------------------------------------------
4. Also, to re-start with, *I request all existing members to re-introduce
themselves please* mentioning their present areas of expertise and how
they
can participate. For e.g. someone with expertise in SysAdmin can volunteer
to post about latest trends on SysAdmin.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
**Good idea if we have a conference call on Skype ? Posting work
**details is not a good idea because i represent myself and not my
**company:-) I can share my experiences on Linux in enterprise or
**banking environment in general separately.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
5. Another idea is to put up posters/notices in colleges which I used
to do
when I was there.
Its good to see the group getting back to life and these are my 2pence to
the same.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
**Money should not be a problem now. We can definitely share it to a
**reasonable expense to bring things to life...
**Maybe we should arrange kind of Linux boot camps to keep people
**engaged.Especially people in schools colleges who are the future.

I guess, Pushpendra and 1 more guy. So, there is a need to involve more

PHP and Postgre. I am trying to establish a server facility in
jabalpur where we can try new technologies, ideas and can share them
with others. Currently I am working on FreeBSD only (actually its the

real stuff. But as i said earlier i dont have enough experience in Linux.
If this can help you guys, or any thing i can do please tell me.

I believe in the years gone by many engineering colleges and technical
institutes have come up in Jabalpur and Linux would be the OS of
choice for the new generation.
Is there no way we can delegate this LUG to new people who could
revive it in a constructive way without duplicating resources already
available on other mailing lists ?
Thanks

Hi,
This LUG has been dead for a long time now. Any ideas how we can
revive this ?
I believe in the years gone by many engineering colleges and technical

Is there no way we can delegate this LUG to new people who could

Hi all,
We are an p2p group named wikiocean (www.wikiocean.net) which
uses & supports free software in whichever way possible.
Most of the time when people are looking for solutions on
GNU/Linux platform they are unsure of service support.
In that context we are looking to make a database of freelancers,
small & medium support centres who are providing GNU/Linux service
support to Individuals, NGO's, small & medium organisations . As
GNU/Linux is a wide-wide world for time efficiency's sake we have
chosen ubuntu as it has the commercial support of Canonical while at
the same time has the technical stability & expertise courtesy the
Debian Universe. So if you are interested in knowing more, please
join http://groups.google.com/group/wikiubuntu.

Dear Members,
A couple of months ago, when we held our editorial meeting to discuss
about the August issue, an interesting point was made, and it came
almost like a revelation. We realised that we have published myriad
articles on popular distros like Fedora, openSUSE and Ubuntu, but
probably never done due justice to the true community distro - Debian
Linux. So, here we are, with the Debian special issue.
This issue is special, both on the editorial as well as the DVD front.
Not only does it bundle the full set of three DVDs containing the
complete Debian package, it also features the best of articles on the
Debian project
Apart from Debian, embedded development seems to be the pseudo theme
for this issue. In addition to an article on debootstrap, we have a
couple of more articles on this topic that should be of interest to
the developer community, especially those working in the field of
Embedded development.
Talking about the industry, probably the biggest news that made
headlines this month was CUPS' creator Michael Sweet's announcement
that Apple has acquired the project. Though nothing seems fishy from
the outside and community also seems to be pretty cool about it, we
have tried our bit to explore the pros and cons of this move.
We have put in our best to make this issue extra special for our
readers. We used to get a lot of requests for bundling the complete
Debian distro with LINUX For You. This time, not only we have done
that, but also got the best of authors to write about Debian. That's
why, I hope that our readers will be able to appreciate our decision
to price this issue at Rs 125. Though the subscribers remain
unaffected from this price change. Another reason to subscribe, I must
say Wink

Debian is a free operating system for your computer. An operating
system is the set of basic programs and utilities that make your
computer run. Debian uses the Linux kernel (the core of an operating
system), but most of the basic OS tools come from the GNU project;
hence the name GNU/Linux.
Debian GNU/Linux provides more than a pure OS: it comes with over
18,733 packages, precomplied software bundled up in a nice format for
easy installation on your machine.
To start the installation, boot from the DVD. Make sure your BIOS
setup is configured to allow booting from DVD. To try out the new
graphical installer type installgui and hit ENTER.
We hope you enjoy reading the issue. Please send all your feedback on
