NCOSS-09 announces

Demo Hall for Open Source Applications

on 25th - 26th May 2009, Mumbai, India.
ABOUT DEMO HALL
The National Conference on Open Source Software, NCOSS-09, announces
DEMO HALL for showcasing open source applications. The aim is to provide
a platform for people to demonstrate their open source works/tools to
the world. Irrespective of whether you have a paper at the conference,
you can use this opportunity to showcase your work.

The application, to be demonstrated, should be an open source
application - i.e., an application which is open source, not just built
using/on open source technologies. The application may be new systems or
significant enhancements to existing open source applications. Adapting
and adopting a collection of open source systems to solve a problem will
also be considered. With lower priority, we will also consider existing
applications with which you have extensive experience that you can share
with the audience. So, if you find, say Moodle, an excellent learning
management system and you have used it extensively, you could offer to
demonstrate it, to spread awareness of such applications.

All those participating in the demo-hall must register for the
conference. The demo hall will have demonstrations slotted for half an
hour each. The demo-hall will run in parallel with the conference paper
presentation, excluding the plenary sessions. The slot allocations will
be done by the conference organisers, considering the topic of the demo
and other parallel events likely at that time.

If you are interested in participating, mail your applications to
ncoss@...
<mailto:ncoss@...?subject=Demo%20Hall%20-%20Application%20>
giving a brief description of the demo sessions. Last date for
submitting your 'Demo Hall' entries: May 05, 2009. According to its
relevance to the conference and other constraints, we will short-list
entries from received applications. The list of demo-hall entries will
be announced periodically, adding new entries subject to availability of
slots. So apply early...

Software Freedom International, the worldwide organizer of the annual
Software Freedom Day, encourages all SFD teams to support the Document
Freedom Day 2009 (DFD 2009) celebration (http://documentfreedom.org/) on 25
March 2009. DFD 2009 aims to raise awareness on the importance of accessible
document formats and open standards in everyone's day to day activities.

Open standards are agreed document definitions which are available to the
public to review and use. They cannot depend on formats or protocols that
are not open standards themselves. The definitions of these open standards
are free from legal and technical restrictions that limit their use, and can
be easily implemented in multiple environments - so they can be used on PCs,
iPods, Playstations and whatever computing environments we'll be using in 50
years time.

Open standards protect governments, businesses and the wider community of
computer users from vendor and data lock-ins. Such lock-ins obstruct users
from exercising their full freedom in software and the information they
access. Computers have only become part of daily life in the last twenty or
thirty years, and yet already there are documents that, due to closed
formats, we are unable to easily access using modern software.

Software freedom will not be complete without open standards and open
document formats. Together, they ensure that free and open source software
can be created and developed to implement open standards to benefit millions
of users worldwide.

The Software Freedom Day and Document Freedom Day teams are united in
advancing information and software freedom for everyone. Find out where your
closest DFD 2009 team is by visiting the website (
http://documentfreedom.org/) - and if there isn't one, why not plan your own
event?

Hi,

Debian has released new stable version after Debian Etch 4.0

http://www.debian.org/

Debian GNU/Linux 5.0 released

February 14th, 2009

The Debian Project is pleased to announce the official release of
Debian GNU/Linux version 5.0 (codenamed "Lenny") after 22 months of
constant development. Debian GNU/Linux is a free operating system
which supports a total of twelve processor architectures and includes
the KDE, GNOME, Xfce, and LXDE desktop environments. It also features
compatibility with the FHS v2.3 and software developed for version 3.2
of the LSB.

Debian GNU/Linux runs on computers ranging from palmtops and handheld
systems to supercomputers, and on nearly everything in between. A
total of twelve architectures are supported: Sun SPARC (sparc), HP
Alpha (alpha), Motorola/IBM PowerPC (powerpc), Intel IA-32 (i386),
IA-64 (ia64), HP PA-RISC (hppa), MIPS (mips, mipsel), ARM (arm,
armel), IBM S/390 (s390), and AMD64 and Intel EM64T (amd64).

Debian GNU/Linux 5.0 "Lenny" adds support for Marvell's Orion platform
which is used in many storage devices. Supported storage devices
include the QNAP Turbo Station series, HP Media Vault mv2120, and
Buffalo Kurobox Pro. Additionally, "Lenny" now supports several
Netbooks, in particular the Eee PC by Asus. "Lenny" also contains the
build tools for Emdebian which allow Debian source packages to be
cross-built and shrunk to suit embedded ARM systems.

Debian GNU/Linux 5.0 "Lenny" includes the new ARM EABI port, "armel".
This new port provides a more efficient use of both modern and future
ARM processors. As a result, the old ARM port (arm) has now been
deprecated.

This release includes numerous updated software packages, such as the
K Desktop Environment 3.5.10 (KDE), an updated version of the GNOME
desktop environment 2.22.2, the Xfce 4.4.2 desktop environment, LXDE
0.3.2.1, the GNUstep desktop 7.3, X.Org 7.3, OpenOffice.org 2.4.1,
GIMP 2.4.7, Iceweasel 3.0.6 (an unbranded version of Mozilla Firefox),
Icedove 2.0.0.19 (an unbranded version of Mozilla Thunderbird),
PostgreSQL 8.3.6, MySQL 5.0.51a, GNU Compiler Collection 4.3.2, Linux
kernel version 2.6.26, Apache 2.2.9, Samba 3.2.5, Python 2.5.2 and
2.4.6, Perl 5.10.0, PHP 5.2.6, Asterisk 1.4.21.2, Emacs 22, Inkscape
0.46, Nagios 3.06, Xen Hypervisor 3.2.1 (dom0 as well as domU
support), OpenJDK 6b11, and more than 23,000 other ready-to-use
software packages (built from over 12,000 source packages).

With the integration of X.Org 7.3 the X server autoconfigures itself
with most hardware. Newly introduced packages allow the full support
of NTFS filesystems and the use of most multimedia keys out of the
box. Support for Adobe® Flash® format files is available via the
swfdec or Gnash plugins. Overall improvements for notebooks have been
introduced, such as out of the box support of CPU frequency scaling.
For leisure time several new games have been added, including puzzle
games as well as first-person shooters. Also notable is the
introduction of "goplay", a graphical games browser offering filters,
search, screenshots and descriptions for games in Debian.

The availability and updates of OpenJDK, GNU Java compiler, GNU Java
bytecode interpreter, Classpath and other free versions of Sun's Java
technology, into Debian GNU/Linux 5.0 allow us to ship Java-based
applications in Debian's "main" repository.

Further improvements in system security include the installation of
available security updates before the first reboot by the Debian
Installer, the reduction of setuid root binaries and open ports in the
standard installation, and the use of GCC hardening features in the
builds of several security-critical packages. Various applications
have specific improvements, too. PHP for example is now built with the
Suhosin hardening patch.

For non-native English speaking users the package management systems
now support translated package descriptions and will automatically
show the description of a package in the native language of the user,
if available.

Debian GNU/Linux can be installed from various installation media such
as DVDs, CDs, USB sticks and floppies, or from the network. GNOME is
the default desktop environment and is contained on the first CD.
Other desktop environments — KDE, Xfce, or LXDE — can be installed
through two new alternative CD images. Again available with Debian
GNU/Linux 5.0 are multi-arch CDs and DVDs supporting installation of
multiple architectures from a single disc; and this release adds
Blu-ray Discs, allowing the archive for an entire architecture to be
shipped on a single BD.

In addition to the regular installation media, Debian GNU/Linux can
now also be directly used without prior installation. The special
images used, known as live images, are available for CDs, USB sticks,
and netboot setups. Initially, these are provided for the amd64 and
i386 architectures only.

The installation process for Debian GNU/Linux 5.0 has been improved in
many ways: among many other improvements, support for installation
from more than one CD or DVD has been restored, firmware required by
some devices can be loaded by using removable media, and installations
via Braille display are supported. The installer boot process has also
received much attention: a graphical menu can be used to choose
front-ends and desktop environments, and to select expert or rescue
mode. The installation system for Debian GNU/Linux has now been
translated to 63 languages.

Debian GNU/Linux can be downloaded right now via bittorrent (the
recommended way), jigdo or HTTP; see Debian GNU/Linux on CDs for
further information. It will soon be available on DVD, CD-ROM and
Blu-ray Disc from numerous vendors, too.

Upgrades to Debian GNU/Linux 5.0 from the previous release, Debian
GNU/Linux 4.0 (codenamed "Etch") are automatically handled by the
aptitude package management tool for most configurations, and to a
certain degree also by the apt-get package management tool. As always,
Debian GNU/Linux systems can be upgraded painlessly, in place, without
any forced downtime, but it is strongly recommended to read the
release notes for possible issues, and for detailed instructions on
installing and upgrading. The release notes will be further improved
and translated to additional languages in the weeks after the release.

Dedication

Debian GNU/Linux 5.0 "Lenny" is dedicated to Thiemo Seufer, a Debian
Developer who died on December 26th, 2008 in a tragic car accident.
Thiemo was involved in Debian in many ways. He has maintained several
packages and was the main supporter of the Debian port to the MIPS
architectures. He was also a member of our kernel team, as well as a
member of the Debian Installer team. His contributions reached far
beyond the Debian project. He also worked on the MIPS port of the
Linux kernel, the MIPS emulation of qemu, and far too many smaller
projects to be named here.

Thiemo's work, commitment, broad technical knowledge and ability to
share this with others will be missed. Thiemo's contributions will not
be forgotten. The high standards of his work make it hard to pick up.

About Debian

Debian GNU/Linux is a free operating system, developed by more than a
thousand volunteers from all over the world who collaborate via the
Internet. Debian's dedication to Free Software, its non-profit nature,
and its open development model make it unique among GNU/Linux
distributions.

The Debian project's key strengths are its volunteer base, its
dedication to the Debian Social Contract, and its commitment to
provide the best operating system possible. Debian 5.0 is another
important step in that direction.

Hi All,

FOSS.in dates are now declared. However, what is more interesting is this:

http://foss.in/2008/10/fossin2008-the-omelette-post/

Of late, FOSS related events seem to be becoming more like election
rallies and this looks like a really positive change initiated by the
organisers. Surely, makes it worth attending even more. Please visit:
http://foss.in for details.

Views, comments and plans on the same are welcome.

Very true. FOSS is now like every where.

With open source events You
a. make friends
b. come to know the latest trends/technology in the market.
c. can market your skills.
d. get free t-shirts/Goodies/CDs etc...

Few of the events are listed here.
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/RegionalTeams/India/EventTracker

I have been to Gnuify(http://www.gnunify.in/) twice Once as an
audience and once as a speaker. Ofcourse the experience was different
:) . Its a worth attending event . There are both technical and non
technical discussions. There is some thing for every one, from
beginners to experts.

The next big event is coming in this November, FOSS.IN/2008(http://foss.in/).
I will be attending it this time.

You can only realize the benefits of such events when you attend one of them.

Hope to meet you in one such event.

Cheers.

hi..I have sent 5 Cds of Ubuntu Linux [www.canonical.com] each to
Takshshila, Hitkarini and Polytechnic colleges and 2 Cds to
Pushpendra. If anybody needs copies, they can contact the respective
HoDs of the said colleges.
If I will get hold on any interesting stuff, I will have it
distributed as and when possible.
Hope the efforts like the one taken by Neependra will help promote the
FOSS movement and create opportunity to embrace the same in
development, education and usage.
There appears to be a growing recognition of FOSS and Linux in
e-governance, education and industry and if seminars and events can be
arranged periodically, it will help guide the efforts of everyone in
the right direction.
With best wishes,

It's not the Gates, it's the bars
By Richard Stallman
Founder, Free Software Foundation

To pay so much attention to Bill Gates' retirement is missing the point.
What really matters is not Gates, nor Microsoft, but the unethical
system of restrictions that Microsoft, like many other software
companies, imposes on its customers.

That statement may surprise you, since most people interested in
computers have strong feelings about Microsoft. Businessmen and their
tame politicians admire its success in building an empire over so many
computer users.

Many outside the computer field credit Microsoft for advances which it
only took advantage of, such as making computers cheap and fast, and
convenient graphical user interfaces.

Gates' philanthropy for health care for poor countries has won some
people's good opinion. The LA Times reported that his foundation spends
five to 10% of its money annually and invests the rest, sometimes in
companies it suggests cause environmental degradation and illness in the
same poor countries.

Many computerists specially hate Gates and Microsoft. They have plenty
of reasons.

'Solicit funds'

Microsoft persistently engages in anti-competitive behaviour, and has
been convicted three times. George W Bush, who let Microsoft off the
hook for the second US conviction, was invited to Microsoft headquarters
to solicit funds for the 2000 election.

Many users hate the "Microsoft tax", the retail contracts that make you
pay for Windows on your computer even if you won't use it.

In some countries you can get a refund, but the effort required is daunting.

There's also the Digital Restrictions Management: software features
designed to "stop" you from accessing your files freely. Increased
restriction of users seems to be the main advance of Vista.

'Gratuitous incompatibilities'

Then there are the gratuitous incompatibilities and obstacles to
interoperation with other software. This is why the EU required
Microsoft to publish interface specifications.

This year Microsoft packed standards committees with its supporters to
procure ISO approval of its unwieldy, unimplementable and patented "open
standard" for documents. The EU is now investigating this.

These actions are intolerable, of course, but they are not isolated
events. They are systematic symptoms of a deeper wrong which most people
don't recognise: proprietary software.

Microsoft's software is distributed under licenses that keep users
divided and helpless. The users are divided because they are forbidden
to share copies with anyone else. The users are helpless because they
don't have the source code that programmers can read and change.

If you're a programmer and you want to change the software, for yourself
or for someone else, you can't.

If you're a business and you want to pay a programmer to make the
software suit your needs better, you can't. If you copy it to share with
your friend, which is simple good-neighbourliness, they call you a "pirate".

'Unjust system'

Microsoft would have us believe that helping your neighbour is the moral
equivalent of attacking a ship.

The most important thing that Microsoft has done is to promote this
unjust social system.

Gates is personally identified with it, due to his infamous open letter
which rebuked microcomputer users for sharing copies of his software.

It said, in effect, "If you don't let me keep you divided and helpless,
I won't write the software and you won't have any. Surrender to me, or
you're lost!"

'Change system'

But Gates didn't invent proprietary software, and thousands of other
companies do the same thing. It's wrong, no matter who does it.

Microsoft, Apple, Adobe, and the rest, offer you software that gives
them power over you. A change in executives or companies is not
important. What we need to change is this system.

That's what the free software movement is all about. "Free" refers to
freedom: we write and publish software that users are free to share and
modify.

We do this systematically, for freedom's sake; some of us paid, many as
volunteers. We already have complete free operating systems, including
GNU/Linux.

Our aim is to deliver a complete range of useful free software, so that
no computer user will be tempted to cede her freedom to get software.

In 1984, when I started the free software movement, I was hardly aware
of Gates' letter. But I'd heard similar demands from others, and I had a
response: "If your software would keep us divided and helpless, please
don't write it. We are better off without it. We will find other ways to
use our computers, and preserve our freedom."

In 1992, when the GNU operating system was completed by the kernel,
Linux, you had to be a wizard to run it. Today GNU/Linux is
user-friendly: in parts of Spain and India, it's standard in schools.
Tens of millions use it, around the world. You can use it too.

Gates may be gone, but the walls and bars of proprietary software he
helped create remain, for now.

Dismantling them is up to us.

Meeting minutes of LUG event (17th June'08)

The event was organized at Takshila Engineering college. It was
attended by students of Takshila Engineering college,Jabalpur
Engineering college,HItkarni Engineering college and St. Aloysius
college.

The event was started with an open discussion in which we discussed
about common problem which students face, like lack of guidance,
resources. Then I mentioned about the practical uses of the
engineering subjects. This was eye opener for few of the attendees.

After that we talked about the Open Source. Why it is idea behind it
and why we should use it?

Then I gave the presentation on Fedora.
http://fedoraproject.org/w/uploads/6/69/Presentations_dakshh_presentation.pdf

We then discussed about the JBP-LUG.I gave a bit of history about it
and then introduced senior members. Then I mentioned about the things
which we can do in LUG meetings and requested some of the students to
come forward and volunteer for LUG activities.
Chandan Tiwari of Takshila Engineering college put his name to help
us organize the next event.

We were not able to finalize the next event venue or date but promised
to discuss about this on the mailing list.

Then Pushpendra advised the students to find "WHY/WHAT ??" in every
thing they see, study.
He mentioned that you should not believe in things which some
says.Analysis of any subject is very necessary and you should consider
both positive and negative aspects.

At the end we distributed fedora batches and stickers.

If I missed something then feel free to add.

Thanks.
Neependra.

ps: As of I now I have very limited internet access, so I will upload
the pictures of the event later.

Agreed...
But the kind of placements students get ,is the question?

This copy-paste attitude is the problem and our aim should be to discourage it.
Students have enough time here but they do not utilize it.

Right. We need to spread the awareness of the open-source and help the
students to understand the that culture. To be frank we do not have
enough mentors in Jabalpur who can help the students to make good
technical projects.Even if there are some, they do it commercially.

On the other hand we have very good mentors available in the online community.
I think we need to work as a channel which can forward the students to
the world of open-source.

Experience people enjoy talking about licensing,GPL/bsd, MS bashing etc..
For students it doen't matter muchl. We should definitely encourage
people to use Linux....having some kind of intall-fest will definitely
be helpful here.

I really appreciate your efforts.
Banner does matter and its your identitiy but there is no problem with that.

It will great if we can do things like this in near by cities.
That should be in cards after a year or so. Lets us first make the base here.

We should defenitely cash the opportunity of you being in Jabalpur.
I know you will be a great LUG member.
Thank you for support.

One more point that would interest new comers is the commercial
success stories of Open Source initiatives.

Even this could be discussed and highlighted in the LUG meets.

I believe you are right Prashant. If this group keeps meeting and
discussing/acting on whatever is discussed things would definitely
move. This would not happen in a day. Vikas I hope you get the cue we
are here to revive the group first and keep it moving. Thinking of
expansion in any aspect is practically a distant dream :) for this LUG
as of now.Every community member is a contributor in his own right. We
need to keep it in mind and keep the spirit up to see everybody is
equally involved and contributing to it.

I would suggest the following as some of the actionable items to be
discussed in this meet besides the Fedora presentations -

1.Frequency and venue of the LUG meet. Date time and place for the
next meet.
2.Identify key members who could be assigned the day to day tasks on
voluntary basis for the LUG or on rotation basis or whatever is feasible.
3. Discuss if any monetary efforts required for the LUG and come out
with the desirables for all to contribute.
4. Discuss the future course of LUG in terms of short term and medium
term objectives.
5. Clear guidelines for all posts, discussions on the mailing list etc
to reaffirm to all upcoming members of this group.
6. Discuss if separate hosting space for LUG is required to put all
its guidelines etc. etc.

The above points may seem simple on paper but require time and effort
of all concerned.

Best Regards
Ravi Shanker

Hi,
just few suggestion typically students are more computer savy in MP.
the first motive of students is to get a decent placement. and a minority
group is to gain knowldege in programming.

1st group is least bothered about linux, as companies don specifically ask
questions on linux and encourage more ctl+c, ctl+v attitude.

2nd group is the one which we need to target.get people to
understand benifits of GNU/linux.

most important thing that a student wants is help in how to learn programming
and and help for major/minor project.
i think we need some kind of effort to help students on these issues.

last but not the least, mostly all disucssions in linux world ends up heavy
discussions on licensing,GPL/bsd, MS bashing. its better we keep these things ,
encourage people to use linux at the same time if required help them write open
source softw.

these are my observation with linux world feel free to add on

Regards
Prashant

Hello Friends,
I am Vikas Naidu, purely working for the development of open source
and spreading it in Jabalpur. Please keep this away from your mind
that one banner has been suffixed with me. The motto of this group is
to spreading the LINUX (Open Source) acceptance in the Jabalpur as
well as the surrounding areas of Mahakoushal as well. If we stick to
Jabalpur only our motto is not going to fulfill. So my suggestation is
plz think for the forward also. I am working for the surrounding areas
also like Katni, Satna, Sagar, Rewa, Shahdol etc. and would looking
forward for happening of these events at these places also. Any kind
of support from me is accepted without any commercial or business
interest. I am the only person who is permanently sitting at jabalpur
so that I feel proud if I can help at any way for this community.
