Re: [jfugue-users] JFugue 3.0?

Hi Chris,

Thank you for your email!

JFugue 3.0 will definitely be out in the next week or so - I've been working like mad to put the finishing touches on it.   I have a bit of a hard deadline coming up, because I'll be presenting JFugue at this year's JavaOne conference in May!

Along with the release of JFugue 3.0 will be a new set of webpages, one of which outlines all of the new JFugue features.  Some of the biggest new features include converting existing MIDI files to JFugue Music Strings, a revised architecture that allows for easily plugging in new Parsers (turn data into musical events) and Renderers (turn events into something that can be heard or seen), support for microtonal music, and much more.  Key signatures weren't in my original plan, but I'll look into it and if it's not too time-consuming, I'll put it in.

One of my Wishlist items that I know I won't have time for is a Parser that can read music from ABC notation ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abc_notation ).  As the Parser converts ABC notation into musical events, any Renderer that is listening to the Parser can convert those events into MIDI, Music Strings, or anything else (maybe an animated light show, or sheetmusic using LilyPond?)

If this sounds interesting to you, let me know and I'll get you a beta version of JFugue 3.0!

Thanks for your interest in JFugue!

Best Regards,
-Dave

I'm a Java developer, and would be glad to get involved in contributing
code if there is an area of enhancement you'd like to see worked on but
don't have the time to contribute to it yourself.

I've been using JFugue to help expand my knowlege of vocal harmony,
using it to train my ear to pitch and tone. As a Java developer, I've
appreciated the API and how it abstracts the details of MIDI away from
me and allows me to focus on the music itself.

If I could change anything about JFugue, I would add key signature
support (maybe you're planning this for 3.0?). It seems an easy enough
thing to do, maybe using a PatternTransformer to, for example,
transform a "B" in the music to a "Bb" if, say, the key signature
if "F".

Another thing that would be nice is a way to abstract the details of
treble and bass clef away and allow me to focus on notes only, though
I'm not sure how I would do it. You still need to put the octave number
in.

Thanks!
Chris
