Summary

Japan today is by far the most advanced country globally in
terms of
broadband FTTH, ADSL, 3G and 3.5G mobile communications.
Mobile payments
and m-commerce (e. g. paying for goods and services by
mobile phone), as
well as mobile transactions (e.g. purchasing shares by
mobile phone)
have become an important segment of Japan's daily life.
The relentless spread of true flat-rate-all-you-can-eat
mobile voice and
data plans forces Japan's mobile carriers to break 100++
years of
telecom business history, and develop entirely new business
models and
to step into new uncharted telecom industry territory.
Japan is also the
only country in the world with full-scale nationwide
electronic cash.
This talk will be based on a recent keynote presentation
given to top
managers in the global mobile communications industry, and
on the
speaker's 20 years of hands-on work in Japan'
telecommunication industry
starting with cooperating with NTT's R&D labs since 1984.
The seminar will describe how increasing competition in
Japan's mobile
industry is driving the next global paradigm shift in the
mobile
communications industry, and how this impacts entire
segments of
Japan's industry, such as the music, games and financial
industries, and
daily life.

The Speaker:

Gerhard Fasol (http://fasol.com/) is CEO of Eurotechnology
Japan KK
(http://www.eurotechnology.com), focused on business
development in
Japan's high-tech sector. Eurotechnology Japan KK has
worked for many of
the world's largest corporations, including NTT's strategy
for Europe,
SIEMENS' business expansion in Japan, and advising the
Government of
Finland on Finland's national mobile industry R&D funding
strategy for
2005-2010. Gerhard Fasol works much for the community
helping EU-Japan
relations to develop and mutual understanding. He served
several years
on the Advisory Board to the Chairman of JETRO, and has
briefed the
President of Germany, the Vice-Industry Minister of France,
US-Senator
Jeff Bingaman and many other VIPs on Japan's technology
industries.
Gerhard Fasol has worked with Japan since 1984 starting
with work on a
cooperation of NTT's telecom R&D labs with one of Germany's
top research
labs. Later he was Manager of one of Hitachi's R&D labs, he
became a
Faculty Member of the NTT Telecommunications Chair of Tokyo
University.
Gerhard Fasol graduated with a PhD in Physics from
Cambridge University
and Trinity College, Cambridge, UK.
