In May 2007, Marc Canter, 'a well-known figure in the sphere of open
standards, social networks and blogging', will visit Japan. Take this
opportunity to hear from Marc and mix and mingle with Tokyo's
international internet community.

PRESENTATION OVERVIEW

Digital Lifestyle Aggregation: Portals 2.0 (DLAs)

As the worlds of social networking and blogging become more and more
of a commodity, new `destination' sites are arising which provide
integrated, aggregated and highly customizable interfaces. These DLAs
will bridge the world of PCs, with mobile, gaming and TV. Are they
long awaited solution for convergence? What about the battle between
the big boys (Google, Yahoo, Microsoft, AOL, MySpace) and all the
smaller players? Will there be any crumbs left on the table - for us?

And what will the global, distributed, decentralized mesh of
inter-connected social networking and blogging platforms look like?

SPEAKER PROFILE

Marc Canter is a well-known figure in the sphere of open standards,
social networks and blogging. Marc co-founded MacroMind in 1984 and
began developing for the newly launched Apple Macintosh. MacroMind
became Macromedia in 1991. He was part of the team that created the
first multimedia player, the first cross-platform authoring system and
the world's leading multimedia platform. Marc was considered one of
the founders of multimedia and has been a speaker, developer and
evangelist in the industry for over a decade. Over the years Marc has
also traveled worldwide, consulting to global corporations and has
written on the multimedia industry and burgeoning world of
micro-content publishing and social networking. He is the founder and
CEO of Broadband Mechanics (http://broadbandmechanics.com) a digital
lifestyle aggregator (DLA) company. Broadband Mechanics builds tools
and environments to enable online communities. (Source: Wikipedia.org)

It is with great sadness that I pass on the news that Ben Miller,
founder of the JPNET list and a well known person in the Tokyo
community passed away at the end of February after suffering two brain
aneurysms.

Ben was a well connected person and a passionate researcher, most
recently spending a lot of his time on Web. 2.0, SNS and other online
services - many of which he posted about on his site:
http://www.benmiller.com/

The funeral has taken place but I will post to this list again as soon
as I have details of any other memorial services taking place or if a
web site is established in memory of Ben.

Please pass on the sad news to anyone who new Ben who you think may
not have heard. Ben's connections on LinkedIn can be seen here:

We'll all miss Ben.

From Conception to Execution: When you have to do it all!
Warren Arbuckle, PMP - Wednesday September 13, 7pm

Today's business demands put increasing stress on
high-performers. As more pressure is placed on individuals and
teams, it becomes critical to broaden each individuals skill set.
Taking an idea from conception and managing it through to the
end product or service requires extremely honed business skills
along with the ability to to align team goals with overall business
goals. Without the underpinning of business fundamentals, your
performance could hinder your progress rather that in enhance it.

This is particularly important for those who wish to improve their
career or run their own business.Warren Arbuckle, of Global
Learning Inc, will present a step-by-step method for analysing,
developing and presenting solutions to problems, a method which
is appropriate for individuals as well as teams. We will then learn
to use a very flexible tool called SWOT to analyse a problem,
task or situation.

== Presenter Profile ==
Mr. Arbuckle is the COO of Global Learning Inc., a
consulting firm specializing in education, training and business
development. Warren has lived in Japan for over 20 years, is fluent

in the training field in the early 1990s after training and working
under Dr Betty Edwards - Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain - a
course in artistic confidence and creativity. After learning Mind
Mapping in 1994, he has studied and worked with the originator, Tony
Buzan, and has taught children, students and adults. Programs range
from learning how to learn, to taking a business idea from conception
and managing it through to the end product or service. He is a

Everyware: The Dawning Age of Ubiquitous Computing
A talk by Adam Greenfield

Saturday, July 15, 2006
14:00
Mita Campus, Keio University

The age of ubiquitous computing is here: a computing without
computers, where information processing has diffused into everyday
life, and virtually disappeared from view. What does this mean to
those of us who will be encountering it? How will it transform our
lives? And how will we learn to make wise decisions about something so
hard to see?

Join noted writer and critical futurist Adam Greenfield as he explores
this new technology and its implications for society, for business,
for the way we design spaces and cities - even for the way we relate
to each other.

Adam Greenfield is an internationally-recognized writer, user
experience consultant and critical futurist. He was previously lead
information architect for the Tokyo office of Razorfish.

ICA Event - June 15th
Improving Communication and Presentation Skills

Speaker: Robert Burnside
President and Chief Communicator of Empowr

Having the best service or technology does not always guarantee success. To get
ahead in business today, effective communication and presentation skills are a
must. Our June speaker, Robert Burnside, specializes in leadership
communication--how to influence others with powerful verbal and visual
communication. He trains, coaches and consults at all levels to teach you how to
understand what you want to say, then say it so that others understand. Robert
will teach you to handle the following questions and situations:

  * Can you describe your business in 20 seconds, or in one minute explain how
you differentiate yourself from the competition?
  * Can you infect others with the enthusiasm you have for your business? Can you
describe your vision?
  * Does your audience take away a visceral understanding--an image in their
minds--of what, why, how?

Robert Burnside will explain what really underlies convincing presentations, why
we need them, why so many presentations are so bad, and how to work towards
making yours better. This is not about presentation skills as we know them, but
about the attitude necessary to acquire the skills; the principles of persuasion
that we have known for thousands of years (and ignore daily); the lessons of
evolutionary psychology and modern neurology; and about using authenticity,
simplicity and common sense. As president and chief communicator of Empowr (a
New Zealand company), Robert has been delivering his Powrtalk training and
coaching for several years at some major companies in Japan (such as Toyota, NTT
DoCoMo, Citigroup).

President's Message
Dear ICA Friends:

The ICA board would like to give a special thanks to our new corporate sponsor
Access Technology. Access Technology is Japan's premier technology-focused
search firm. Access joins current sponsors Skillhouse, Temple University & PM
Global.

As a part of the ICA's ongoing efforts to better serve our members, we are
continuously looking for feedback from our attendees. In doing so, we have
received a number of constructive comments. One of those comments has been that
there is not enough time to share information regarding each member's company
during the networking period, prior to the main presenter. For this reason, we
have set up two discussion rooms at Yahoo. One of them is for assisting members
in better sharing information about their respective companies. Details at
http://www.icajapan.jp/yahoo_chat.html.

ICA Chat
This discussion group was set up to allow members to voice their opinions, offer
suggestions on ways to improve the ICA, or discuss whatever is on their mind.

ICA Company Promo
This discussion group was set up to allow ICA members and friends to post
information about their company.

Again this month, we would like to thank LINC Media for promoting our events in
their popular and informative email newsletters which are free of charge. For
those of you thinking of buying real estate in Japan, there is a wealth of
information in the archives of the Personal International Investor newsletter.
You can sign up for that newsletter and 9 others at:
http://www.japaninc.com/subscribe_news.html.

The big news around Tokyo has been the sale of Vodafone KK to Softbank.
Softbank's Son-san is moving quickly to transform the company which is a good
strategy in the ongoing battle with KDDI and DoCoMo. Sun Tzu, the author of the
Art of War, would approve. In chapter two Sun states "When doing battle, seek a
quick victory. I have heard of military campaigns that were clumsy but swift,
but I have never seen military campaigns that were skilled but protracted".
Son's reputation with services such as Yahoo BB is to slash prices to gain
market share. This is great news for consumers and enterprise customers of
mobile services, but terrible news for KDDI and especially DoCoMo which is
already under pressure from price erosion. The next 12 months will be very
interesting to watch in Japan's mobile space. Hey, maybe the ICA can get Son as
a speaker later this year!
Sincerely

Darren McKellin

President of Weisser Consulting and Director of PBXL

Title:
IP Telephony, the Future is NOW

After years of hype, IP Telephony, Voice Over the Internet, VOIP and integrated
applications are changing both consumer and business interaction in Japan. Some
markets are beginning to see the "death of distance", while others (especially
Japan) are moving to a highly integrated phone and networking model.

Jim Weisser, President of Weisser Consulting and Director of PBXL, will speak
about migration from legacy systems to hosted services in businesses, how
consumer services like Skype and YahooBB fit into the global picture, integrated
applications and some of the entrepreneurial opportunities in this fast changing
environment. By putting voice and data over one IP network, companies can save
money and provide their workers with communication tools not available with
older proprietary systems.

Customer Centric Business Planning ---
    Henry M. Seals, President
Merchant Global Technologies and Investment (MGTI) http://www.mgti.co.jp

Most concepts for a new business come from within, where one takes an idea in
their head, along with a perceived possibility, and
develops a business model. As a start-up business, a beginning that is either
too slow or too bumpy, can derail even the most
enthusiastic entrepreneur. What large companies do, and what many start ups can
take advantage of, is a customer centric approach to
business development; that means building a business plan based on an organized
assessment of customer needs.

In short, if you give your customer what they want, they will buy it.

There is a plethora of ways to economically and effectively be Customer Centric,
and these methods have provided large dividends to
many companies. Henry Seals will explain the methodology behind this method of
business development, and how it is used successfully
by large corporations, as how many start-ups can implement such steps,
economically, and quickly.

== Speaker Profile ==
Henry Seals began MGTI in 1998, at the request of one of his college professors,
to share his experiences in Japan with companies
and individuals in the West, whom were looking for in-roads into Japan. To fund
his business he wrote a book about his professional
experiences, titled Making It in Japan, An Insider's Road to Success. In 2000
he partnered with a US internet firm and created
BiPacificLink, a consultancy based in NY. In 2002 he sold his interest in this
company and returned to focusing primarily on
companies in Japan. At present, using a Customer-Centric approach Henry's firm
is now expanding into the education market.

This month's Ringo Macintosh User Group meeting will focus on the
theme of Japanese language study and reading aids. The feature
presentation will be by the crew that produces JapanesePod101[1], a
free daily podcast designed to make learning Japanese fun and
relatively painless. There will also be demonstrations of some web-
based tools (including Jim Breen's WWWJDIC[2]), an extension[3] for
Firefox and Thunderbird, LiveDictionary[4], the OS X translation
widget, and probably a flash card program or two.

Ringo Macintosh Users Group http://www.Ringo.net/
Friday, March 17th 19:00~21:00
Theater, 3rd Floor, Apple Store, Ginza
Free admission.

Everyone interested in the Mac is welcome. (Many of the topics
discussed at this meeting are cross platform, and so may be of
interest to the Unix/Linux and Windows communities too.) Most Ringo
meetings are webcast live. Check http://www.ringo.net/ during the
meeting for details. The Ringo MUG hosts an active online bulletin
board[5] and mailing list[6] system for problem solving and general
discussion between the monthly meetings.
