This month's Ringo Macintosh User Group meeting will focus on the
theme of Japanese language study and reading aids. The feature
presentation will be by the crew that produces JapanesePod101[1], a
free daily podcast designed to make learning Japanese fun and
relatively painless. There will also be demonstrations of some web-
based tools (including Jim Breen's WWWJDIC[2]), an extension[3] for
Firefox and Thunderbird, LiveDictionary[4], the OS X translation
widget, and probably a flash card program or two.

Friday, March 17th 19:00~21:00
Theater, 3rd Floor, Apple Store, Ginza
Free admission.

Everyone interested in the Mac is welcome. (Many of the topics
discussed at this meeting are cross platform, and so may be of
interest to the Unix/Linux and Windows communities too.) Most Ringo
meetings are webcast live. Check http://www.ringo.net/ during the
meeting for details. The Ringo MUG hosts an active online bulletin
board[5] and mailing list[6] system for problem solving and general
discussion between the monthly meetings.

ICA Event - February 16th
Speaker:
Yosuke I. Itoh III, Director, CSP and Media Industry Services, Abeam Consulting
LLP.

Title:
Japan's Mobile Commerce Boom!
A Driver for Marketing Loyalty Program Consolidation

Japan is beginning to experience a dramatic increase in m-commerce adoption,
driven in part by Mobile Suica's launch, set for January 28, and the
super-successful "FeliCa"-branded mobile contactless payment services which have
been adopted by NTT DoCoMo, KDDI and Vodafone as the de facto market standard
for m-commerce, e-wallets, transportation and other peer-to-peer data transfer
services. Our presenter, Yosuke Itoh will cover how these advances in m-commerce
are changing the landscape in the field of Loyalty Marketing.

Loyalty marketing programs are designed to create loyalty and increase sales
from your best customers. Adding mobility and mobile payments to these programs
opens up a whole new world of opportunities for mobile marketers and enterprises
in todayfs competitive marketplace. Up until now, the proliferation of such
programs among virtually all national brands has made program differentiation
difficult. Our presenter will explain why several national retail brands are
teaming up to form "coalition loyalty schemes", and how the m-commerce platform
is helping to make this an even more powerful tool. Prior to joining Abeam,
Yosuke Itoh was an Associate Partner at Accenture's European
Communications/HighTech practice , CTO & Operator Alliance Director with the
original Livedoor Inc., and VP of CIO office at SONYfs Global headquarters.

*Books = Mind Mirrors*

Just as books are mirrors of the mind, bookstores serve as thought
seismographs.

Surely Casanova, my fellow librarian, would agree that "I couldn't find

going unnoticed. We now evaluate books every business day, so feel

free to bring your books any time!

*Country named after books?!*

Books are called *hon* in Japanese; Japan is *Nihon.* This doesn't mean the
country is called "two books." However, it *is *the same Chinese character.
The *hon *of *Nihon *means source or origin, for knowledge

will be a long, long time before a country is known as *Nimovie *or *Nianime

one has asked yet, but we don't have Batman in Bhutanese either!

a special course fee schedule, below:
Planning and Managing Projects (P&MP)
March 8-10 (3 days) - Tokyo Design Center
Early registration eligibility: Register by Jan 27
Professional Development Units (PDUs): 24

The most hands-on project management course available in Japan. Focus on the
definition, planning and control of key value-adding processes in projects. Case
studies are replaced with real projects that participants decide, giving project
managers a head start on their real work. Excellent for project teams that are
starting out a new project, or project managers needing knowledge in the
fundamentals, but at a deep level.
Managing Integrated Programs (MIP)
March 27-28 (2 days) - Tokyo Design Center
Early registration eligibility: Register by Jan 27
Professional Development Units (PDUs): 16

Starts from the premise that interdependent projects must be managed with added
skills and techniques. The aim is to improve program execution by using the
Planning and Managing Projects (P&MP) framework in each project, and conduct
special activities to initiate the program definition, manage interdependencies
between projects, and manage time based on one integrated schedule. Essential
for managers of multiple, connected projects, and the project managers of those
component projects.
Course Fees
(fees in JPY) Regular Fee Early Registation Fee
P&MP 200,000 180,000 (save 20,000)

Package! 300,000
(save 50,000) 250,000 (save 1000,000)

resources a chance to benefit from these courses. Company sponsored participants
can still benefit from the package course fees

ICA November 17 Event at FCCJ

Topic: W-CDMA/EVDO Mobile Security

While our reliance on mobile communications has increased, the reliability and
dependability of these networks has steadily decreased. The original voice-only
mobile networks were very secure from external security threats. However as
Mobile messaging services became popular, mobile networks were subject to spam
attacks which were primarily a nuisance but not a security threat. The advent of
GPRS, CDMA 1xRTT and now W-CDMA and EVDO has introduced full internet
connectivity to mobile networks. The entire internet is now connected to mobile
networks through a direct path with Emerging IMS platforms that mobile operators
are planning to deploy. Mobile network operators are just starting to realize
the enormity of the problem. There is serious concern that internet connectivity
will expose mobile networks to a wide range of security threats.

Questions to be answered by this presentation include:

* What are the security threats in the Mobile operators eco-system?
* What are the opportunities for technology companies and System Integrators?
* How big is the Mobile Security market?
* How does IMS (IP Multimedia) Network deployments impact Mobile Operator
Security?
* How does lack of Mobile Security in operator's network impact Consumers?
* Why should the Government be concerned about Mobile Network Security?

Our presenter, Greg Tarr, founded SecureMobile in 2005 focused on W-CDMA/EVDO
Network Security, and CrossPacific Capital in 1998 focused on Asia/Japan
Business Development for Venture Capital funds + Mobile Technology Startups. His
angel investments and/or interim VP roles in Silicon Valley/Greater
China/Japan/Korea firms include Azteq Mobile, Kodiak Networks, IP Unity,
Linktone (Nasdaq Exit March 2004), Smartpay, Proquent Systems (acquired by Byte
Mobile), Snowshore Networks, Com2us, Infobank, Intrinsic, Unitech + Asia Online.
Greg earned a B.A. in Psychology and Marketing at University of Colorado-Boulder
and an MBA from Pepperdine University-Los Angeles and attended Bronx H.S. of
Science.

Greg Tarr, Technical Director in Japan for Foundry Networks

PCC 21: "Communicating with Designers" - MJ Daniels-Sueyasu, Wed 9 Nov. 2005

How do ideas get translated from a client to a designer? Clients and
designers are a indeed different breed with different needs yet the the
economy has created the need for them to work in harmony.

In the internet age when communication literally flies at an electric pace,
companys' have to have a streamlined process for establishing an online
presence to promote their new products and services. The designers with the
skills and experience are the ones they turn to for execution, yet the
communication between the two parties can often be a stumbling block
resulting in additional costs, delays and even failed projects.

MJ Daniels-Sueyasu, a veteran in the international Tokyo web design
community will share her expertise and experience to help you achieve
successful design projects. Focusing primarily on graphic and web design,
designers will learn what they can do to better work with clients, and those
with projects to offer will learn what they can do to better communicate
with designers in order to complete projects successfully - on time, on
budget, and with the minimum amount of stress.

=== Speaker Profile ===
MJ Daniels-Sueyasu is a seasoned web monkey. She has years of experience in
the web design industry having worked on projects for both small and large,
international and domestic companies, including an extended period working
as Web Design Manager at the American Chamber of Commerce in Japan. Being
one of the early blogging pioneers she has extensive experience in several
content management and blogging software including Movable Type, Wordpress
and Expression Engine and played an active role in establishing a the Japan
Bloggers community. She now works independently with her own business
Souzouzone with clients such as veteran Japan mobile technology company
Enfour. Her personal web site can be found at www.souzouzone.jp.

In 2004 the PCC had a couple of great presenters talking about Social
Networking Services (SNS) - web sites that help connect people and their
extended networks. A year later and registrations at these sites continue
to flourish. But users fall into two general groups - heavy users making
big use of them and people who have registered and don't really know what
they've registered for or how to make use of the service. This is a waste
because SNS' have enormous power to connect extended networks in such a
way that was simply not possible before they existed and not using SNS
services means wasted effort and missed opportunities.

Focusing on business (i.e. not friend/dating) SNS services experts and
novices alike will learn what SNS services are all about, how to use them
and how you can make them work for you. Key items to be covered are:
- A look at the Top 3 Social Networking Services: www.linkedin.com,
www.openbc.com, www.ecademy.com
- Some of the not so great SNS services
- An intro to of the top Japanese social networking services and the
differences compared with their English counterparts.

As an added bonus, for those with an interest in MindMapping software this
presentation will be given using that latest version (v.6) of MindManager
from www.mindjet.com.

Topic: The Next Generation of Internet Protocol
Opportunities and Challenges for Enterprises in Japan

IPv6, the next generation Internet Protocol, has been in the works since the
early 90s when the rapid growth of the Internet threatened to exhaust existing
IP addresses. The new protocol offers scalability, increased security features,
real-time traffic support and auto-configuration, but the path is full of
pitfalls and risk. This presentation will focus on how to introduce IPv6
networking into the enterprise network without the introduction of productivity
risk. Specific focus will be on how to make enterprise environments more secure,
reliable, and productive for Voice, Video, Data, and Interactive networking.

Japan is a leader in the development of IPv6 technologies, but the focus is
mostly on service providers in the initial phases. As the list of service
providers offering IPv6 increases, so does the chance and opportunity to
effectively introduce high productivity IPv6 technologies. Our speaker, Gary
Blankenship, plunged into communications in 1983 as a telephone and data systems
engineer in the United States Marine Corps for 14 years in roles ranging from
Telephone Switchboard Technician to Information Systems Management Officer.
Later Gary worked for key US government contracts as the lead engineer in Asia
for Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC) including all US
Medical facilities in Asia and as a key network security architect and operator
for the United States Marine Corps' Network Operations Center in Quantico, VA.
Mr. Blankenship has a Bachelor of Science in Information Systems Management from
the University of Maryland.

Dear friends of the TPC,

The Tokyo PC Users Group holds annual elections at the October
meeting. If the TPC is to continue holding monthly meetings and
improving the new website, we will need to know who is interested in
running for the offices of president and vice president.

This year, it's particularly important to get people involved as I
will not be running for re-election and Sako Eaton has had to resign
as vice president. If we can not find people who are interested in
running the club -- finding speakers for the monthly meetings; and
adding content to the new website at www.tokyopc.net then it will be
my last and sad duty to disband the group.

It may well be that the TPC has outlived its usefulness. It was
started out of a need for English language information on building
and repairing personal computers; and now a lot of that information
is available online.

I won't keep you, but I did want you to know that if we have no
volunteers to run for the offices of president and vice president by
the October 6 meeting, the Tokyo PC Users Group will be no more. If
you're interested, just show up at the meeting.

As usual the meeting will be held at the Tokyo Union Church in
Omotesando. Doors open at 6:30, meeting starts at 7:00. In light of
the fact that this may be the last TPC meeting, I have not scheduled
a speaker. If we find the volunteers to continue the TPC by that
evening, then the time will be spent in discussion on how to manage
and maintain the Tokyo PC Users Group. If you need a map to the
meeting please email me at barbaram at global online.

Thanks,
Barbara Manning, TPC president
Tony Whitman, TPC treasurer

ICA September 15 Event at FCCJ

Topic: Security Threats in Japan
Changing Attitudes, the Legal Framework, and Credit Card Industry
Countermeasures

Attitudes towards data security are changing: the Japanese media has recently
made a great hoopla over recent high-profile card counterfeiting, data leakage,
and phishing incidents. Our speaker, Daniel Lintz, will present some case
studies of recent security incidents that received widespread media coverage.
Daniel will describe countermeasures that Visa International and the broader
card industry are taking in response to these threats, and the opportunities
that this will create for other players in the IT field.

Japanese have traditionally paid little attention to data security -- due to
lifetime employment, a strong social fabric of mutual trust -- and financial
networks have been intentionally isolated. Global credit card industry standards
and practices -- such as front/back magnetic stripe specifications, terminal
standards, and encryption -- have driven the industry to evolve separately from
local financial-service sectors. Daniel will describe the legal and regulatory
frameworks behind this disparity. He will also cover recent changes in Corporate
Governance.

SPEAKER

Daniel Lintz, Director of Corporate Communications in Japan for Visa
International Asia Pacific Ltd.

A long time Tokyoite, Daniel joined Sony Corporation Headquarters as a PR
Manager in 1997 and spent the next four years promoting new technologies and
strategic initiatives including the AIBO robot, the FeliCa IC card platform,
high-density recording media and the Super Audio CD. Since June 2001, Daniel has
served as a Director of Corporate Communications for Visa International, with
responsibility for media relations, government relations, and public affairs.

The Tokyo Metropolitan Government recently started Tokyo Business Entry
Point, a free "one-stop information portal for foreign-affiliated firms".

http://www.tokyo-business.jp

Quoting from the site:
"In addition to essential business-related information such as Licensing
regulations and governmental support services, this one-stop portal also
offers information about education, housing, and other day-to-day
necessities."

I believe they are still quite quiet at the moment so it is a good time to
be asking questions.

"Design as a Driver for Brand Identity - the difference between design
and non-design run companies and why it makes a difference"
Jake Layes, Business Development Manager, AsiaPacific at
     Alias Systems (www.alias.com)

Have you ever wondered what's involved in getting a product like the
iPod from concept to market? Product design is something many of us
never get exposure to yet it is critical to the success of many
companies.

Drawing from his experience in product design, Jake will talk about
how product design is an important factor for a company's brand
identity. He will explain the important characteristics of a
design-run company and how current technology developments will change
how designers and companies will look at product development and brand
identity in the future.

=== About Joachim Jake Layes ===
Joachim "Jake" Layes, business development manager for Alias in the
Asia Pacific industrial design market, has had a hand in the design
development of products at Philips Design for Philips Electronics in
Europe and Asia.

He has been in Asia Pacific for much of the last eight years, and
through his positions meets many designers and design companies from
different industries and countries within Asia Pacific. He is
particularly interested in how Design has gained significantly in
importance as driver for brand identity.

He is a graduate of the Art Center College of Design in Switzerland
and US, and has worked for an Interior Design office in Germany, for
Philips Design in The Netherlands and Hong Kong, and for Alias in
Singapore and Tokyo. Jake gives design workshops and lectures and
recently presented a key note speech at the Tokyo Business Forum,
Japan.

Dear friends of the TPC,

The Tokyo PC Users Group holds annual elections at the October meeting. If
the TPC is to continue holding monthly meetings and imporving the new
website, we will need to know who is interested in running for the offices
of president and vice president.

This year, it’s particularly important to get people involved as I will
not be running for re-election and Sako Eaton has had to resign as vice
president. If we can not find people who are interested in running the
club – finding speakers for the monthly meetings; and adding content to
the new website at www.tokyopc.net then it will be my last and sad duty to
disband the group.

It may well be that the TPC has outlived its usefullness. It was started
out of a need for English language information on building and repairing
personal computers; and now a lot of that information is available online.

I won’t keep you, but I did want you to know that if we have no volunteers
to run for the offices of president and vice president by the October 6
meeting, the Tokyo PC Users Group will be no more. If you're interested,
just show up at the meeting.

As usual the meeting will be held at the Tokyo Union Church in Omotesando.
Doors open at 6:30, meetining starts at 7:00. In light of the fact that
this may be the last TPC meeting, I have not scheduled a speaker. If we
find the volunteers to continue the TPC by that evening, then the time will
be spent in discussion on how to manage and maintain the Tokyo PC Users
Group. If you need a map to the meeting please email me at barbaram@...

Thanks,
Barbara Manning, TPC president
Tony Whitman, TPC treasurer
