Description
This group was created for the exchange of ideas related to development of Joe Monzo's JustMusic software, utilizing lattice diagrams to create microtonal music. That objective has changed.
In February 2003, Chris Wittmann and I founded a company called Tonalsoft, whose purpose is to provide the tools that enable musicians to more effectively compose, playback, analyze and manipulate music in any tunings.
In May 2003, development started on the first version of our core software product, which will
- Graphically create a prime-space (lattice) for visually manipulating rational tunings, temper those tunings to create custom temperaments, or to enter and edit freestyle tunings that are neither rational nor tempered,
- Create musical pieces that incorporate one or more tuning systems, and use the graphical tools to compose in the selected tuning systems,
- Save those pieces in native and MIDI format, for playback (on standard players or Tonalsoft’s microtonal player).
With most architectural design and early development behind us, we have a core product which will be released mid-to-late 2005. We seek proficient software developers passionate about music to join our team and to take the lead. Knowledge about musical math, device drivers, and real-time programming are a plus.
The challenging work will continue, as we have thousands of major and minor features to add as the product and its sibling products evolve and become increasingly more robust.

After the software is finished and released to the public, we’ll also have a users group with open access.
