The next version of KOffice will be based on Qt 3.0, so it will have
bidi support, just like the rest of KDE. It will probably be released
separate from KDE 3.0, so the release date of it is not yet known...
KOffice is probably the part of KDE that lacks the most in terms of
complete Hebrew translations, so help with translating is very much
needed. If you're interested in helping with this, contact me by email
and I'll explain what has to be done.

Hello everyone here.
What is needed for KOffice to be translated... ?
Will it be "right to left enabled" in KDE 3.0 ?
What kind of help is needed ?
(I don't see SUN's StarOffice doing any good with Hebrew in the near
future).
I think that will help a lot of people to port to Linux very soon...

Yes, I can read Arabic. Didn't they teach it to you in
school? :)
I would like all discussion regarding this matter to end
now. We got what we wanted, the translation was
changed. Any further discussion about this is
unnecessary, so please, there is no reason to post
anything about it in IGLU.

Do you read all the translations in the KDE project? ((: ?
Also, I think this is something that should be written in "iglu" web site.

Regard the Arabic translation: I think that to translate "Israel" to
"falastin almuhtala", is like we will translate "Palestine" to " The
terrorist's country" or "murderers country".

This is not really a hebrew issue, so I'm not sure ivrix-discuss is a
proper mailing-list for this, but I guess the rest (linux-il and kde-il) are.
> I complained to the KDE i18n maintainer, and you can
I think the issue is pretty simple: the UN has an official list of countries,
which, like it or not, contains both Israel and Palestine. This list of
countries is also used to determine which "country" can get a ccTLD (country
code top level domain, like our ".il") so in the last couple of years there
was an interesting phenomenenon of several tiny countries who never joined
the UN because of the costs, joined it now with the money it got as an
advance from a company which is to run this country's domain name (I believe
".tv" was such a country).
Anyway, the only sensible thing for the KDE maintainer is to refuse
politically-controveritial "countries" that don't exist in the UN's list.
No "Occupied Palestine" (but yes to a "Palestine" and "Israel"), no "Muslim
Republic of Kashmir", no "Iraqi province of Kwait", and so on. Even the whole
Taiwan/China mess has official names in the UN's lists, if I remember
correctly.

Greetings,
I thought it would just interest you to know about a
debate that's started regarding the translation of KDE
into Arabic that recently entered the KDE CVS.
To sum it up, the string "Israel" which is used in the
country list in the KDE Control Center was translated
into Arabic "falastin almuhtala", or "occupied Palestine".
I complained to the KDE i18n maintainer, and you can

Greetings,
I understand everyone wants to see screenshots of KDE
with QT 3.0 in action, but I think it's too early for it being
possible to take these screenshots. The latest CVS version
of KDE is still awfully unstable and it is very hard to have
applications do something that's worth a screenshot
without crashing (Even taking this Kate screenshot took
a whole lot of effort)...
Still, I hope to make some of these screenshots soon,
it is just that I am busy right now with converting the
Hebrew translations of KDE 2.2 to logical Hebrew for
KDE 3.0. Once I do these screenshots I hope to have
them posted on the KDE Israel website and mention it
on IGLU.

Miracle? Heh :)
I didn't have much time to bother taking screenshots,
and they wouldn't look all that impressive at this
stage anyway, but for your viewing pleasure I took
one shot of typing Hebrew in KDE's text editor Kate:

Can you post some screanshots of this miricle?

I'll share with you some of the experience I had
with installing KDE with QT 3.0 beta 4.
I checked out qt-copy from the KDE CVS. After some
attempts I was able to compile the QT 3.0 libraries.
I then compiled kdelibs. To my surprise it compiled
without any problems. kdebase also compiled well,
though some applications caused problems since they
weren't ported to QT 3.0 yet.
Even more surprising, KDE started up without any
problems. It is not that stable, but still can be
partially usable. The bidi features are in there
as promised. I was able to very easily type in
Hebrew from right to left in KWrite and Kate.
However, there still seems to be some problems
with it. Most noticeable is a problem with spacing
between the first character and the rest of the
word. Nevretheless, Hebrew is already fully
functional. A nice additional feature it has
is that applications user interfaces come up
mirrored if they are translated into Hebrew.

Greetings,
As you can see, the switch many of us have been waiting for for a long
time finally ocurred. KDE is now based on QT 3.0, and the next version
of it will have full support for Hebrew throughout its interface.
I will soon begin converting all of the Hebrew translations from
KDE 2.2 to logical Hebrew for KDE 3.0.

capabilities. Report any bugs you find with it so that they will be
fixed

Hi,
I just committed the configure changes to require Qt 3 for HEAD. I also
removed the QT_NO_COMAPT defines where I found them.
Things:
- compilation with QT_NO_COMPAT is currently not very high priority. the
main focus should be to make it compile with the current switches and
fix the major issues that prevent running it.
- no QT_VERSION backward compatibility is required in general. KHTML is
a
bit of an exception which needs to work with kdenox (QT2/Emb) therefore
we
have to keep the #ifdef's there for a while at least. Besides that, no
requirement of backward compatibility with Qt2 anymore, that means no
#ifdefs.
- please do not remove the QT_VERSION backward #ifdefed parts too early.
looking at them makes sure that porting is correct and the code is
ported
the same way everywhere. I'd recommend at existing ported parts to get
inspiration on what to do.
- please add the attic-classes from Qt3 where necessary to achieve
compilability, unless you have hacked up already replacements. its just
a
near future solution, I hope we can get rid of them very soon.
Happy porting.
Dirk
till there will be a way to manually select encoding in kmail i think
reading hebrew will be an issue in it
mozilla has a certain solution but i dont trust their mail till they
fix some more bugs
outlook doesnt send htmled messeages with a encoding code properly
marked so other clients will be able to read it only outlook clients
can decode the message properly

I will do some experiment with Hebrew writing.
Also , don't QT3 is supposed to fix this problem ?

In regard to your regards this list is for hebrew issues in kde which
is more likely to be "i cant read/write hebrew.".
considering some of us are reading mail with kmail ( i haven't
succeeded in making it decode hebrew consitantly ) and not Microsoft
Outlook Express which you seem to be using ( its clear from the
headers )
maybe with kde 3 and qt 3 hebrew will be easier but till then ill
stick to english for email

In regard to your regards this list is for hebrew issues in kde which
is more likely to be "i cant read/write hebrew.".
considering some of us are reading mail with kmail ( i haven't
succeeded in making it decode hebrew consitantly ) and not Microsoft
Outlook Express which you seem to be using ( its clear from the
headers )
maybe with kde 3 and qt 3 hebrew will be easier but till then ill
stick to english for email

Regarding writing in English:
Don't you think that it is abut time that we start writing in Hebrew?!
This is all this mailing list is abut, HEBREW !
So if we will continue writing English we are missing the all point & also
losing a lot of people that don't participate in this mailing list because
of their English is not language they can communicating easily or at all !
I think that the amounts of people that can't read Hebrew are much less then
the one that can.
& Since we are an Israeli mailing list, I think we should writ in Hebrew.
Also I think that this semi historical moment that QT3 is so close, is more
then a HINT to start writing in Hebrew.
Also, I wold like to make an offer for some small publicity for all Linux
activity, KDE & this mailing list & announce in all the forums etc .. That
this mailing list is open to Hebrew writing.
You will be surprised how many will come.

Greetings,
Let me start out by asking everyone on this list to write in English. We
can't be sure everyone can read Hebrew in their email client, and so we have
to settle for English at the moment.
If you or anyone else is interested in helping out with the translation
effort, please contact me.
KDE should move to QT 3.0 at the end of this month. In this message:
http://lists.kde.org/?l=kde-core-devel&m=99873469915494&w=2
you can see that the big switch is planned for this Friday (31/8).
If the change runs smoothly, we should expect to be able to use Hebrew in any
application that is based on the KDE 3.0 libraries. This includes the KOffice
applications.

I recently got an answer how to fix the hebrew mapping from lord-rel -
thank you very much, it works, and it ownz :>
but talking about gtk based apps, and qt based apps in X, like licq, or
xchat, is there a way to map the keyboard and prevent X from blocking
hebrew characters to them?
if so, umn, please email me, umn, and thanks again lord-rel! :>
Dan.
its quite simple to fix the question mark problem is font related as
the standard font helvetica is english only, some programs can have
their fonts change internally, but it is recommended to to change the
default kde fonts in kde to hebrew encoded ons.
for other apps i have noticed as well that kde has not good affect on
them, so for all over hebrew support i recommend using the command
setxkbmap -compat "group_led" -symbols
us(pc101)+il+group(shift_toggle)+group(switch)"
maybe even adding the command to your xinitrc
for using this command and changing the hebrew key see
http://iglu.org.il/faq/cache/86.html

I recnetly installed slackware 8 on my computer which comes with kde
2.1.1.
after sniffing around kde, i tried to map my keyboard to hebrew. the
kxkb applet is really neat, except for the fact that it didnt work for
me, so i sniffed around even more and saw i also have to export LANG,
LC_ALL and LC_CTYPE to be "he_IL" (tried with "he" as well), but the
result was same, whenver i switched to hebrew, it didnt plot anything on
applications such as rxvt, xchat or licq, and when trying it on
applications such as kedit, or konsole, i get question marks.
i tried to see what happens when i type characters, using xev, and the
characters that i typed really came out according to xev, so, i'm pretty
much of frustrated, if anyone knows what should i do, that might be
really nice if he/she would send me an email explaining me the problem,
and how to solve it.
thank you from advance,
Dan.
