hi Stairways,

please make checking for updates an option that I can switch on or off
in the prefs.

I principally do not like it, when applications are set on automatic
regarding update-checks. It feels like someone else decides what´s
happening on my machine.

Besides that, everything - the features I use - seems to work fine.

Greetings

hi,

there is one functionality I am missing a lot:

I do not really need KM´s program-switcher, OSX´s command-Tab is fine
for me.

But I would like to be able to use controll-Tab for switching between
the windows of an open application.

Maybe I just have not found out yet how to do this. Please give me a
hint. Otherways I want to reqest Stairways to implement this in the
future.

Greetings

Nice one. I only worked out Cmd-Tab recently, and use it continually,
but I didn't know about Cmd-`. I've noticed it doesn't swap between
Finder windows: is it supposed to?

Hi guys :)

Each time I try to use the Window-switcher, it tells me I need
Universal Access, which for some reason isn't there: when I open it in
System Prefs (using Prefs Menu, a top little utility)

http://www.codeservant.com/prefsmenu.php

the Preference pane is blank. <Clytie looks blank>

Evidently I haven't installed it, or I've managed to delete it somehow.

I've tried running a custom install from my Panther disks, but the
install software doesn't like the idea, since I have 10.3.5 on my hdd,
it decides I must want an archive install or a clean install, which of
course I don't.

Does anyone know how I can get hold of Universal Access (which would
help me in other ways, since I'm ill and disabled) somehow, please?

I'd really appreciate the help. I know it's not KM's job to usher users
through system installs, but it might be helpful to include a note
about why it needs Universal Access, and how to get hold of it if you
don't have it. I may not be the only person around who's managed to
lose it. Many people may not install it at all, at first, if they
Custom Install.

Thanks :)

There's a utility that you can use to access and install individual
items from the system install disks, like the old TomeViewer, but I
can't think of the name of it. (Brief Google search....ah! Pacifist.
Locate Pacifist and it may be able to do the job for you.)

Hello,

I have recently moved from OS 9 to OS X 10.3.5

In 9 I used QuickKeys to create keyboard shortcuts for pulldown menu items in
Quark,
Photoshop and the Finder.

Now I need to either upgrade QK or get an alternative utility.

Will KM do what I want? Can one tell KM to record a shortcut or a sequence of
actions as
in QK?

Thanks,

Keyboard Maestro can create shortcuts (keyboard Hot Keys) for
pulldown menu items and lots of other system actions.

Keyboard Maestro does not currently (including version 2) have
recording to record a sequence of actions, although for creating a
hot key to a pulldown menu, it will let you just select the menu item
and fill in the details for you (as of 2.0b16).

Enjoy,
     Peter.

AFAIK, yes, you can: you have two options.

1. Collect the actions together as an Applescript, and simply tell
Keyboard Maestro to run the script at the relevant cue

(a) New Macro
(b) New Action -> Execute -> Run Applescript
(c) assign a cue (trigger)

2. List the actions as a macro. When you choose New Macro, you have a
choice of actions and triggers. You can simply ask for one thing to be
done, or list a number of actions in the order you want them.

(a) New Macro
(b) choose initial action, and its cue (trigger)
(c) choose next action. If listed directly under the first, in the same
macro window you opened to make the New Macro, then these actions
should run in order.
(c) If you want any of the successive actions to be cued by particular
things, you can assign them triggers, too.
(d) Save the macro, and test it out.

In fact, KM is extremely customizable. You can use it simply as a
switcher, or you can explore its power as a custom scripter. It's up to
you, how much you ask it to do.

It would be fun, and rather useful, if KM users could post macros
they've developed somewhere on the KM site. Is this possible without
much hassle for the developers? It would get more use there than if we
bury individual macros in the archives of this list. I'm just getting
into AppleScript, and I think there is a useful relationship possible
between KM and AS. I'd like to see the sort of script collections
available online, reflected at least a little bit, in macro collections
for KM. I'd be willing to do what I could to help this work. Any ideas?
Boundary lines? A new, shiny whistle?

I think there is a bit of confusion in this description as to the
action with multiple triggers. In Keyboard Maestro version 2 (due
for release shortly):

You have a list of Macro Group, each of which can be limited to a set
of Applications. Each Macro Group contains a set of Macros.

Each Macro contains a sequence of Macro Actions and a set of Macro
Triggers. The actions are executed in order when any trigger happens.

Macro Actions can be any of a large number of different actions, such
as selecting a menu, simulating a key press or mouse click,
controlling iTunes, pasting text, and so on.

Macro Triggers can be hot keys (key presses, like F1,
command-shift-X, etc), time events (eg, every hour), application
events (eg, when Photoshop is launched), clicks on a floating
palette, and PowerMate actions.

I'm sorry to report more problems with the beta version

Although I downloaded b19 (using Interarchy, as usual) and installed
it, and it has a creation date of 13th September 2004, it still calls
itself b16. This may only be a cosmetic matter.

However, LaunchBar can't see b19 in my Applications folder on my hdd,
which is weird.

The biggest problem, however, is that although KM opens normally and
displays my list of macros, none of them work!

I think I'd better go back to an earlier beta meanwhile.

This behavior is reminiscent of a bug that was present
in earlier version of the MacOS X (which, BTW, I
reported and saw that hey fixed). I believe it was
MacOS X 10.1 where Apple introduced a caching feature
for application launching which improved the launch
speed the applications after the first time you
launched them. However, the caching mechanism didnot
correctly work when an applicaiton was replaced in the
Finder through drag-n-drop. Bascially, it maintained
and used the cache of the older verison of the
application even the disk contained the newer version.

To compensate for this bug, you simply had to log out
and log back into tour user account (the cache was
wiped with each log out).

But this is strange, because I believe Aople did fix
this bug.

Hmmm . ..

Yes, I restarted after the security update, and everything was fine,
then.

I have had problems with downloading updates to apps., and having my
browser cache the previous version, so I don't get the update at all,
but I get KM via Interarchy. I doubt if it would do that.

I hope so. I recently had to zero my disk and reinstall from scratch

Nice to see the relase of KM 2.0.

The "Activate Specific Application" switches to the app if it is
running, but it doesn't create a new window. If I click on the app in
the dock, it will be activated and makes a new window of there isn't
one. This is especially useful for Safari.

Is there some other way to achieve this behaviour in KM2? Is the way it
works now a bug or a feature?

The same thing happened in the previous version.

Subject: PR: Stairways Software releases Keyboard Maestro 2.0
peterneillewis
Send Email Send Email

Perth, Western Australia - 21 September 2004 - Stairways Software Pty
Ltd is pleased to announce Keyboard Maestro 2.0, the eagerly awaited
successor of its powerful powerful productivity enhancer for Mac OS
X. Keyboard Maestro consists of three functions: powerful macros,
program and windows switching, and clipboard switching.

Using Keyboard Maestro's macros you can control applications,
windows, or menus; insert text; open documents, applications or URLs;
execute scripts; control the system, iTunes, or a PowerMate; and
more, all with the touch of a key, click of the mouse, periodically
or at specific times, or even when an application is launched,
running or quits.

The Program Switcher lets you cycle through applications or windows,
closing, hiding, launching, and more. Keyboard Maestro can help you
regain control of your crowded screen by letting you close or hide
multiple windows or applications, especially useful in the Finder.

The Clipboard Switcher lets you select from a number of named
clipboards, storing information away for later retrieval. Store the
details you are working with and access them by name again and again.

Keyboard Maestro was acquired by Stairways Software on 30 June 2004
and we have continued to build on the solid foundations that Michael
Kamprath developed in Keyboard Maestro 1 and the initial 2.0 betas.

Keyboard Maestro 2.0 represents a complete rewrite of the internal
engine to support multiple Macro Triggers including:
* traditional Hot Keys - execute macros with the press of a key.
* Application - on launch, quit, activate, deactivate, or
periodically while an application is running.
* Time - on login, at a particular time of day, or periodically.
* Macro Palette - with a click on a context sensitive Macro Palette.
* PowerMate - by using a PowerMate.

Keyboard Maestro 2.0 also adds support for a wealth of new actions, including:
* Manipulate Window - resize, close, zoom and more.
* Press Button - Simulate a click on a button.
* Simulate Scroll Wheel - Simulate a scroll wheel action.
* Use Named Clipboard - Use a particular named clipboard

Keyboard Maestro 2.0 adds a new concept of a Macro Group, a set of
Macros that are enabled for a specific set of applications. This
allows you to easily create Macros to enhance a particular
application without tying up Hot Keys in other applications.

Keyboard Maestro 2.0 adds support for importing and exporting Macros
so you can share Macros with your friends and colleagues.

Detailed changes include:
* New Application Triggers on launch, quit, activate, deactivate.
* New Time Triggers on login, at a particular time of day, or periodically.
* New floating Macro Palette appears if you have any active macros
that are triggered from the Macro Palette.
* New PowerMate Trigger.
* New Manipulate Window Action - resize, close, zoom, move, minimize,
bring to front the current window or a named window.
* New Press Button Action to simulate a click on a named button.
* New Simulate Scroll Wheel Action.
* New Use Named Clipboard Action to use a particular named clipboard.
* New Insert Current Clipboard Text Action Token.
* Macro Groups for controlling Macro targeting.
* Support for Importing and Exporting Macros.
* Quit Engine command in the File menu.
* Acquired and supported by Stairways Software.

Keyboard Maestro 2.0 requires Mac OS X 10.2 or greater.

Keyboard Maestro is engineered by Stairways Software Pty Ltd and
distributed by Kagi. Keyboard Maestro is licensed on a per
workstation basis (individuals can choose to license it on a per user
basis).

New customers can purchase Keyboard Maestro from
<http://purchase.keyboardmaestro.com/> for US$20.

Hi all,

This is just a reminder to everyone about the way this mailing list works.

The mailing list is an open forum for discussion of all things
related to the released version (now 2.0!) of Keyboard Maestro. You
can discus macro examples, ways to use Keyboard Maestro, problems,
bugs, issues, future directions, anything along those lines.

We here at Stairways are on the list and will listen and respond as
any other Keyboard Maestro user might, and will answer questions and
problems as time and inclination permit. We generally wont discuss
future issues like future release dates or features that will or wont
be in particular versions, except for things like bug fixes that will
definitely be in near term minor releases, and generalities like
"that issue/request is on our list".

We also don't guarantee to answer all emails here, so if you have a
support request that you require our assistance on, that should be
sent to our support address, <support@...> which we do (to
a reasonable degree anyway) generally respond to within one business
day.

Enjoy,
     Peter.

You can set this in the Safari prefs, for example: create a new window
on startup. Many apps give you that option in their prefs. Then
whenever KM switches to an inactive app., it will startup and execute
its preference. I'm not sure KM should be usurping that choice, but
that's a individual thing.

Hi--
I just updated from v.1 to v.2. A bunch of my macros are broken and I can't
seem to recreate them with the new version. For instance, I had a
universal "find file" macro which opened "find file" in the Finder.

The new Keyboard Maestro does not record menu pull-downs (in any
application, as far as I can tell), nor does it open Find File when I type it in
manually.

Lots of my other macros no longer work, though not all. I have
macros to launch various applications from option+key hotkeys. Some of
them work, others don't.

What's up with this? The new version is useless to me as is...

Thomas,

10.3.5 with all the patches... so that ain't it.

I tried this at work. As I did not have that particular macro
assigned previously I entered
and V2 correctly does this:

Insert Text 'Steve Chambers...'

rather than trying to display the whole macro inline. I think I will
try deleting and re-
adding it. Perhaps that was a leftover from an earlier version's
preference file corruption...

thanx!

Yes, but I was thinking more of the situation where Safari is started,
but have no open windows. In this situation, clicking on the (already
started) app in the Doc switches to it and (in Safari's case) creates a
new window.

I'm quite sure KM 1 worked this way. KM 2 doesn't.
