Good snap! It must have been very exciting.

I remember one of the Leonids from '97 or '98 where we watched from Vangani
and at that time too we had seen 2-3/minute peak rate.

Hi All,

We (me, Nilesh Desai, Ganesh Kale, Girish Vaze & Swapnil Kore) went to Lonavala,
for meteor shower observation & Photography.

The Sky was cloudy by the time we reached our observing place at 11:00 PM on
17th night. The sky darkness was very good as we can see through small openings
in clouds. We spend few hrs in waiting for sky to clear as there was lot of
movement in clouds. By 1:00 AM we started setting up things, telescopes &
cameras. By the time setup complete Sky was totally Clear !!!

Clear, Dark with Dazzling Stars !!!

And we were already seeing some meteors flashing in sky. The rate slowly
increased and peaked by 2:30-3:00 AM when we could see 2-3 Meteors / Min and
this count is just from North, East and Overhead portion of Sky, south & west
were blocked from our view !!!

Thats pretty amazing rate corresponds to almost 150-200 meteors / hr !!!!

I was shooting with Camera on Tripod, almost all meteors fall in the portion of
the Sky where my camera was not pointing !!! S0ome 5 meteors just out side of my
camera Frame & One Meteor we saw actually passed through Sky where camera was
pointed but that was the time between two shots !!! Just 7 secs break between
two shots and I missed the Meteor in that break !!!

Finally I got one Nicely framed !!! But here too my success did not come without
disappointment !!!! In the Same Frame I missed another "Dazzling Fireball" -
almost -6 or -7 magnitude. Blazing with green / orange color, trailed almost
15-20 degrees across sky & its Smoke-Trail lasted for 15-20 secs !!!

It started just at the edge of the My Frame and where you can see its starting
point and then its Out !!!!!

Here is the Catch !!!

http://www.flickr. com/photos/ thakursam/ 4116555514/

I need to check with Girish as he too pointing in the same portion of the sky at
that time with almost 4times bigger Frame than mine, I was using 18mm Lens & he
was 10mm, he must have captured both Meteors nicely !!! will update later on
this.

Overall this was one of the best Meteor Show I have seen so far, nice dark sky
and good number of meteors !!

Do share your experiences !!!

Have a Clear Sky Always

as i pointed in other mail, the debate might exist for sake of debate. how ever
the issue of iridium existence needs to be explained by Volcanic activity
people. Incidentally the credit for KT boundary related work goes to famous
(accelerator) physicist Luiu Alvarez  and his geologist son Walter.

I dont know abt the volcanic eruption issues, so maybe some geologist in group
can comment on the issue.

thanks for sorting out dating related issue.

Hi,

This is about accuracy of Dinasaur Extinction dating. Recently Paul Renne and
his team from University of California, Berkeley has refined the dating
techinques. Now they can give a better estimate of extinction of Dinasaur and
many other organisms. Earlier the extinction was estimated to happen 65.5
million years ago with the error of 300,000 years. According to Renne and his
team the extinction is now dated at 65.95 million years ago with the error of
40,000 years. For more details see the following references:
1. http://www.universi tyofcalifornia. edu/news/ article/17711
2. K. F. Kuiper, A. Deino, F. J. Hilgen, W. Krijgsman, P. R. Renne, and J. R.
Wijbrans. Science 25 April 2008: 500-504. DOI: 10.1126/science. 1154339
or
http://www.sciencemag.org/cgi/content/abstract/320/5875/500

Though the extinction dating is becoming more and more accurate, the theories
about how mass extinction of dinasaur and many other organimsa at the
Creataceous- Tertiary (K/T) boundary happened is an issue in debate.
Nevertheless study of Shiva crater is interesting in its own aspects.
