You may also try one of the Live CD distributions of Linux and have all of the kicad stuff on a USB stick for example. I use Linux and Windoz versions of kicad
Very well said. Any time there is a "closed" program, file format or whatever, it limits you to that program and often it makes your life harder than easier.
