I have a short presentation on the upcoming Venus Transit that I would
also like to give.
Should take 10 - 15 minutes. (I'll need a digital projector).

Thanks,

Subject: NEAF Adventures

JoAnne and I made a quick trip to NEAF (North East Astronomy Forum) in
Suffern, NY, this weekend. Friday we were in Huntingdon, PA, helping with
the Burrell Middle School team at the state finals of the Science Olympiad.
There were 36 teams. After finishing 2nd at regionals a month ago, our team
won 4 or 5 medals, but we are certainly not heading to nationals. Teams
from around Philly always clean house.

We left Huntingdon around 5:30 PM and drove to northern New Jersey to a
hotel. It was then just a 10 minute ride to NEAF from the hotel Saturday
morning.

When we were carrying our bags from the hotel out to our car, we reached the
lobby and a few folks were holding a discussion, blocking our way. While we
stood there waiting for the Red Sea to part, a hand grabbed my shoulder from
behind. I turned around and it was Jeff Norwood from Camera Concepts. We
see him at star parties all over the country. He and his team had stayed
overnight in the same hotel. That surprised me, since he is from NYC, but
I'm sure it was a lot more convenient.

When we came back in to get our complimentary breakfast, there was a lot of
astronomy talk going-on on in the small restaurant. We joined-in. When one
fellow, about my age I suppose, found out we were from the Pgh area, he told
the story of when he was a teenager, he had attended an Astronomical League
convention in Charlotte. To make a long story short, someone gave up her
ticket to an area airplane ride so he could go and take some photos. It was
Wilma Cherup of the AAAP and he has never forgotten that act of kindness.

We arrived at NEAF at 8:25 AM, bought our admission tickets and almost
immediately the line began to move. NEAF opened at 8:30 this year. It is
held in a huge gym at the Rockland County Community College, in the Eugene
Levy building. I'm not sure if it's named after the actor or not. I think
they reported that there were more than 250 vendors and there were also a
number of presentations and workshops. The only one I wanted to see was
Sunday and I wasn't going to stay another night just for it.

At any rate, we began a survey walk around the booths. Not more than 2 or 3
booths in, we bumped into our buddy Dave Cotterell from North York, Ontario.
We see him at many star parties. His club sponsors Canada's largest,
Starfest. 10 booths later we saw Al (last name?), a friend of Bob Kepple's.
I've known him off and on for a number of years. He attends Astroblast and
the BFSP a lot. After our survey walk, we went back through the arena and
did a more in-depth tour, examining products. I ran into Carroll Iorg, the
president of the Astronomical League. (For you MLB fans he is the cousin of
Dane and Garth Iorg.) We've known each other for a few years and I'm doing
a modified AL presentation for him later this summer in Canada. What
impressed me here was the AL fellow who was with him, not only recognized my
name as being a member, but he knew my middle initial! Talk about a memory!
Speaking of memories, I saw Phyllis Lang in her Knightware Booth. She
produces some very nice observing software. Several years ago when I first
began to chase minor solar system moons, I had e-mailed her asking if she
was planning on adding moons to her software. She is, but it still hasn't
happened. At any rate, I thanked her for helping me with some websites that
can produce an ephemeris for moons I like to target, and after all this
time, she remembered that I was from around Pittsburgh. Then, JoAnne spent
some time talking to a lady she knows from the Night Sky Network. She's
gotten a ton of use out of the kits the Kiski Astronomers have earned. I
can't give too many details on the NSN booth because I went across the aisle
and looked at some fossils someone was selling. Speaking of fossils, there
were a lot of antique scope on display.

What also surprised me was not the fact that there were a half dozen or so
European vendors, but that Hubble Optics of Hong Kong was there. They said
it was a 19 hour flight. They were displaying a 16" and an 18" scope. I'd
imagine they'd have to make a $3500 profit just to pay for their
airfare/shipping.

A variety of interesting stuff, and pretty cool to bump into people we know
from around the US and Canada, but we made no major purchases. $15 of odds
and ends and 2 cups of coffee. We left around 10:30 AM and got home by 5 PM
Saturday afternoon. I was asleep by 9 PM or so, the 2 long drives tired me
out.

If you haven't been there, it's great to see all that stuff in one place,
and we've been there 2 years in a row now, but I'm not sure how frequently
we will go in the future. Hmmm...I also said that last year!

Hi Gary,

We discussed your interest in supporting astronomy activities in western
Butler County during last night's Kiski Astronomers meeting.

Although there some concern was expressed about the stretching of our member
resources over wide areas and the scarcity of dates due to possible previous
commitments and/or other club activities, the basic consensus was this: If
you see something you believe to be important for the Kiski Astronomers to
support, contact the membership and see how many have the ability and time
to help. If there's enough people, then make the proper arrangements.

Sorry you were out of town and unable to attend.

John Holtz, Ed Honkus, my wife JoAnne and our younger son Geoffrey observed
the November 15, 1999, Mercury transit from a site that I now recommend you
consider as a back-up for whatever local Venus transit observing plans you
have for June 5. Who knows if it will be cloudy there, but it won't be the
same Great Lakes clouds we see so often in western PA.

The site is on an overlook, high above a lake, with no western horizon
obstructions. It is probably a 6 hours drive to Pittsburgh's southwest.

Your destination is near Brookville Lake of southeastern Indiana,
specifically, the Bon Well Hills area between the town of Brookville, IN and
the Mounds State Recreation Area to Brookville's northeast.

You may find a quicker way to go, but the simplest directions are:
1. Take I-70 west to Richmond, Indiana.
2. Go south on US 27 to Liberty, Indiana.
3. Go south on Indiana Rt 101 for about 14 or 15 miles.
4. Turn right at a brown park sign that mentions: Army Corps of Engineers
Office, Visitor's Center, Bon Well Hills and Overlook.
5. Turn left where the next sign indicates the Overlook road.

You will need to carry your scope from the parking lot to the overlook. It
was 50 feet - 100 feet, I'd guess, but I'm old and 1999 is a long time ago.

Good luck.

night, May 12. The forecast is for clear to party cloudy. I wonder how
much rain that means!?!

We have another confirmed PSA, it's in the Post-Gazette. Hopefully the
weather will really cooperate for once since at least a few of the media
folks I contacted appear to be interested.

Please let me know if you're planning to come and help with the star party.

Thanks a million everyone.

Terry

Just a heads up on a detour.

Somewhere on Pine Run Road, the back road that Kunkle Park is on, there
is a bridge out .... I'm guessing for repairs or being replacement.
Saturday we saw detour signs are at each end of Pine Run Road, one being
Rt 356 past the old ice cream stand/mini golf heading towards North
Washington and the other is on Rt 380 about a half mile past the stop
light at 7th street extension again heading towards North Washington.
I'm not sure where the closure is on that road and didn't have the time
to check it out. I know the first detour sign said local traffic only.

Pine Run Church Road, off Rt 66, that some of you take to Kunkle looks
to be ok and maybe the way to go.

I'm guessing that the detour is going to be there for a while.

I was wondering if anyone in the club might be interested in doing some type of
presentation
for the Zelienople Library. I had talked to the library last January and
mentioned that our club was

working with other libraries, such as Saxonburg, in the Butler County area,
doing programs and such.
I got a call from Amy yesterday, wanting to know what we could do. I told her
since we're still in Florida
that I couldn't do much for her, but I would get someone to give her a call from
up there, {see letter
below}. So if anyone is interested, let me know, or call her and talk to her
about it. We'll be home this weekend, and I'll have my email back on by Monday.
Thanks a bunch...Gar

Well, some folks may be interested, remember the consensus was for you to
talk to the group first.  So contact the members who live closer to your
area and see if they want to commit to anything before you shut it down.

OK, for some reason I thought that Ed was something. I forgot about
Tony.
Anyway, I'll be home on Friday and take care of it. I thought we were
trying

to get the club into the public's eye. At the time when I was working
for the

library system in Butler I talked to all the Librarians about
promoting an interest in

Astronomy and tried to create an interest in the Kiski Club and their
members doing
star parties and presentations, similar to what has happened in
Saxonburg. I'm
guessing by what you said about the last meeting, and our involvement
in Butler
County, that I shouldn't have said anything to these other libraries,
because they

are located too far from the Kiski Area. If this is how it's going to
be, I'll
get in touch with Bill Moutz, and he can contact them to set up
something. I hate

to see the interest in this die out...Gar

Yes, I don't have his address, I sent it to you and Ed, {the
officers}.
Not much I can do about it down here, and I told here someone in the

club would get back to her to talk about it...

Hi Gary,

I’m not sure what you’re saying.  Do you want me to forward this
e-mail to John Labrecque?

hi Gary,

If you or someone wants to work with them on setting up a date, I'd be
happy to come up and give a talk.
Just don't schedule anything until after June.
