My name is girish and i work at metalayer a knowledge management firm which
develops collaborative spaces for communities. You are quite right there is a
lot of confusion true because sharing docs, work in progress issues, separate
formal communities of practice are disparate entities and using this in the
intranet is a pain as there are different entities and different needs served.
CONTEXT Is lost if i am right

David, i work for metalayer and we develop collaborative spaces with a
difference, you share files, start discussions, meetings, work in progress,
communuties of practice in the same portal and under CONTEXT (if i am speaking
to you or sharing some info then in simultaneously i can share files to support
the dialogue, put up links to webpages, share Video, Audio, Put up images,
Presentations everything in context to our discussion)

May be you might not understand it right now, but if you please i can show you a
demo of the portal to you and your colleagues then you can suggest to your
company about this portal - IF YOU feel satisified.
