Re: Morror replacement

Hi Marc,

Sorry, but I doubt anything other than a very similar model would fit... Your
cheapest route might be to find a broken down T3/T3N or, perhaps, an A3/A1000. I
dunno if either of these latter two would fit for certain... However, one of
them - and I forget which right at the moment - is based upon the same body and
chassis as the T3/T3N, so might be a good parts candidate.

You might get some offers from folks here on KonicaSLR, who have spare parts
cameras.

I seriously doubt a mirror from an FT-1, T4, TC or the earlier T/T2 would fit.

Also, I'm afraid it's not an easy job to replace the mirror(not like Canon 5D,
where the mirrors fall out on their own and a little super glue fixes them in a
jiffy... pretty sad for a camera that sold for $3200-3300 apiece initially).
It's a major teardown of the camera toi get the mirror out, and might as well do
a compete and proper CLA on it while at it.

I've worked on cameras for years, but I still try to avoid cleaning mirrors
myself and prefer to put it in the hands of a pro. Those mirrors are
front-silvered and very, very easily damaged. A local shop that does camera
repairs might be able to help and might just surprise you if one or the other of
those mirrors isn't actually damaged, but is just "gunked up" from failed light
seals or something like that. Sometimes when those foam seals are neglected and
get too old, they get gummy, crumbling and particulates of the black foam stick
on the mirror. It's most often at the leading edge of the mirror where that
happens.

Note: I'd be careful about letting a local shop do much more than a simple
mirror cleaning and, prehaps, mirror light seal replacement. The reason is that
a lot of them are unfamiliar with Konica and end up mis-adjusting the camera, so
that it "pre-fires" every time you wind the film and cock the shutter. That's
very common when a shop that's not experienced with Konica works on a T3 or T3N.

If you don't have a local camera repair shop, then Greg Weber at
www.webercamera.com is probably your best bet. He knows Konica inside and out,
and might be a source for a replacement mirror, as well. Or, you might ship your
cameras to him in trade for a good, working T3/T3N. Get a good one and you'll be
all set to shoot another 30 years with it!

The last "parts" T3N I bought showed up in full working order! It was supposedly
jammed, but I think was just being stubborn from sitting for years and the
jostling during shipping must have brought it back to life!

Anyway, there are some other Konica repair people around (check the Database on
KonicaSLR home page), but Greg is about the best known of them all.

Hope this helps!

Please say it ain't so Michael! You should *never* use a standard Q-Tip (cotton bud) anywhere inside a camera. I know a lot of people do it, but that doesn't...
