I agree the price will come down gradually.  After all before Jinfinance
entered the fray Cameraquest was (and still is I think) charging $150 and up for
Leica and Canon FD adapters. It is a question of whether you want to start using
your legacy lenses now or wait  awhile to save a few dollars.  The photos on
the Flickr site are great and certainly demonstrate the usability of the Micro
4/3rds legacy lens combination.   So far I am very pleased with the test shots
I have taken with one lens as well.

I suspect that the price will come down as more makers enter the market. The
standard 4/3 adapters are all at about $30 or less and do much the same thing,
although they use less material being smaller. I think this price has a lot of
air in it.

Delivery is usually reliable from these suppliers, but is not trackable so
occasionally things vanish. It takes 10-15 business days usually.

In another group, CanonFD, I found a link to some photos (not mine) that show
what you can do with legacy optics on the micro 4/3. Check it out:

Hi Philip,

I chose the G1 over the GF1 for the following reasons. The G1 has a built in
flash (not that crucial) and a built in live viewfinder.  To get the live
viewfinder with the GF1 you must buy an add on which is costly and kind of
defeats the slim-line profile of the camera.  Also as I want to use
larger/heavier legacy lenses such as Hexanons the larger grip on the G1 is an
advantage. What the G1 lacks is movie mode.  The GH1 is a G1 with movie mode
but is a lot more expensive.

You also might want to check out the new Oly EP2 which has an add on live
viewfinder like the GF1 and which comes with the EP2 kit.  The EP1 did not have
a live viewfinder option.  The Olympus cameras also  have the advantage of in
body stabilization anti-shake rather than in lens as with the Panasonics.

There are three companies on the Bay selling the adapter made by Jinfinance.
One located in Hong Kong is selling it for $70 US the cheapest I have seen so
far.  I paid over $90 from Jinfinance.

Hope this helps,
Doug

Hi Doug

So you've managed to activate the shoot w/o lens function. I've been playing
with this adaptor as well and I don't think there is a focus confirmation beep
facility. You can magnify a bit of the image easily through the menu cluster of
buttons. Press the left hand one, then the middle one to confirm, then focus.
Touch the shutter release to get back to full screen. I'm going to try my 55mm
macro next.

be a magnification focus aid which will magnify a portion of the scene in the

advanced point and shoot cameras and DSLRs, overcoming some of the
disadvantages of each, but not matching the greatest advantages of either.  So
it's clear why these little beauties appeal to Hexanon users, but not so clear
to me who else would prefer micro 4/3 to highly versatile point and shoot

guess I'm so used to packing a DSLR with three and four pound zooms attached,
that I can't relate anymore.  Cost aside, it would be fun to own one and try to

I think I may have actually purchased something from that seller. I'll have to
dig through old e-mails and see if I can find out.

This 28mm F1.8 is sometimes sold by the dude in LA who gloms on to all the rare
lenses on eBay. At any point in time he has 2-3 listed. Pricing is about
double to triple what I think they are worth, but he seems to have some
turnover. One way to do it.

I was fortunate in picking one up a while ago, the pawn shop thought they were
raping me. They had no idea. Sometimes you gotta jump on a deal.

I think the key with this combination of a micro 4/3rds and a Hexanon is to use
the auto everything lenses in the normal and wide angle ranges and the Hexanons
in the long focus range. For example an 85mm, 135mm and 200mm Hexanon would be
about right, I don't think I would use anything shorter then a 50mm though......
I think much over 400mm would be overkill.....

exposure is correct. The scale is visible in the viewfinder which is reasonably
bright even with the lens stopped down. I have been using my Pentax DSLR's for

takes some getting used to. I am trying to figure out if there is a focus

be a magnification focus aid which will magnify a portion of the scene in the
viewfinder but haven't figured out

So far I have only used the Hex 43mm f1.8 as I figured it would balance nicely
with the G1.
I have been going through the manual as I shoot a few test pics indoors to find
out which features will work in manual mode with the adapter.  The viewfinder
works very well with the adapter/konica AR combination. I tend to use the screen
mainly to review pics I have taken, preferring the viewfinder for picture

Hi Fred,

Oh, how I wish I had. I wonder what such a thing would be worth if it ever came
up on Ebay. But for my purposes, I found the next best thing: A brochure with a
nice big photo of the beast. Has anyone here ever seen a 58-400mm in real life?

cheers,

jj,

After I got your first post regarding the info that I would probably have to
change a setting I searched through the Custom Menu and found the "shooting
without lens option". I turned it on and you know the rest.

Many thanks,
Doug

Doug, I just did some more digging on the subject and it seems the G1 has
a custom menu where you need to enable the *Shooting without lens* option. The
default factory setting for this if OFF. Good luck.

Hi Doug,

Right off the bat, let me say I don't have a G1 or the K/AR adapter for it, but
from what I was able to read here and there, it seems to me your problem might
be that your camera doesn't *realize* it has a legacy lens on it.

Modern cameras communicate with the lenses mounted on them by means of contacts
on the lens mounting plate. These contacts convey all sort of info back and
forth, such as focal length, aperture setting, image stabilization info, etc.
When you use a lens (or adapter) that has no contacts, the camera acts as if
there was no lens on, hence the Defcon 3 alarm.

There is a place in the menu where you can *tell* your camera you are using a
manual focus (MF) lens. I am not referring to the M mode setting, which only
turns the camera's automatic modes off, but a setting in the menu itself. If I
am not mistaken, this setting should turn off all the lens related electronic
circuits and let you use MF lenses.

Just a few thoughts off the top of my head.

cheers,

jj (in Warsaw)

When I place the adapter on the camera with or without a lens attached it seems
to fit fine but I get a message on the camera viewfinder saying "please check to
make sure the lens is attached correctly" I have tried following the suggestions
in the camera manual for when this message appears to no avail.

Yes. I set the mode dial to M and the focus dial to MF to no avail.

Do you have to use "manual" mode when using the adapter?

Hi all,

Hopefully someone can help. I just received the micro 4/3rds adapter and tried
it with my G1 camera. It does not work (won't allow me to take a picture) When I
place the adapter on the camera with or without a lens attached it seems to fit
fine but I get a message on the camera viewfinder saying "please check to make
sure the lens is attached correctly" I have tried following the suggestions in
the camera manual for when this message appears to no avail.

Is there a simple solution involving one of the camera's settings? Has anyone
else had this issue? Any ideas as to what I should try. I have sent an email
to the seller outlining the problem. I cannot find any reference on the web to
this problem.

Help!

I don't know if under normal circumstances the lack of an optical viewfinder
(OVF) is a deal breaker on these cameras. Might be useful for focusing, but a
focus confirmation or zoom in the EVF might be just as useful. Considering that
few modern cameras are intended for manual focus, they don't have the optical
focusing aids like split ring / diaprisms either, so focusing isn't easy with
OVFs either.

The thinness of these bodies is what allows them to be used with our old
Hexanon lenses, which have some huge bebefits with these cameras.

1) A 135mm f/2,5 Hexanon becomes equivilent to a a 270mm f/2.5 lens, and a 200mm
f/3.5 Hexanon becomes equivilent to a 400mm f/3.5 lens. The effective length
doubles, but the speed is not affected. Try finding a 400mm f/3.5 lens for a
Nikon D series, man, you would need to take out a second mortgage to pay for
that baby, which would probably outweight a Hexanon 1000mm.

2) Lenses in these equivilent lengths are going to be rarely used, so the fact
that they are already 30 years old, and require tricky manual focusing isn't
going to be as big an issue as with a standard lens that gets used all the time.

I personally don't think that 10 years from now the SLR will still be made.

EP1 body so far. Panasonic has it in their lenses. I dunno why. I want to
wait a while before getting one of these. I try not to buy the first model of
any new technology.

winning technology, still. You get very good image quality in a true shirt
pocket size if you use a pancake lens. People do rave about the faster
operation compared to point and shoots, and they like the Oly in camera JPEG
processing for its color rendition. For me this technology is on a wait and see
list, no doubt version 2 from Oly will be better still etc.

with image stabilization in body make this a real win using the classic Hexanon
glass [obligatory Konica mention :-].

talk to) makes all the difference. Of the micro 4/3 cameras, I believe only the
Oly EP-1 has it. I wouldn't use it however, because I can't see myself shooting
without true optical viewfinder. Still waiting...
