Hi All,

Thanks so much to Ray (for shooting it), Susan (for providing the Fuji stereo camera), and members of the club for elevating my spirits with your thoughtful stereo video greeting sent November 25th. It looked great on Stereoscopic Player.

I've just now returned home after being discharged from Stanford University Medical Center eight days ago, followed by a week recuperating with friends (see attached photo) in Morro Bay. The original plan was for the surgeon and his team to mend my existing mitral valve. Sad to say, my original valve was just too far gone. Plan B was to install a mechanical valve. So, now that mechanical valve is click-click-clicking away. It'll certainly take some getting used to, as will my now greatly restricted diet so as not to upset the effectiveness of the blood thinner and blood pressure medications (which I must take for the rest of my life. Grrrrr.....).

'Getting stronger every day, but still tire easily from small tasks. However, I've made great strides over the past week and can now walk half a mile. I look forward to shooting new stereo landscapes, figures, and everything else within a month or less. By the way, thanks for the two Competition Awards on a pair of Legacy entries from the last competition. It's always a great honor.

Onward & Upward,
Abe Perlstein

MTBS-TV Launched...In 3D!

Meant to be Seen and the S-3D Gaming Alliance Start Broadcasting Online
                                                   in Stereoscopic 3D

Toronto, Ontario, December 2, 2009 – Founded in 2007, “Meant to be Seen” has earned a strong reputation for advocating and being a catalyst for stereoscopic 3D gaming. So much so, it has become the largest S-3D gaming website in existence. To view the MTBS-TV inaugural broadcast please
visit: http://mtbs3d.com/cgi-bin/rss.cgi?news_id=378

"Meant to be Seen has been reaching gamers since 2007, and the first thing we learned is you always need to try new ways to reach them.  MTBS-TV is our latest effort," said Neil Schneider, President of Meant to be Seen.

Featuring Neil Schneider as its host, it's broadcast through a 3D webcam and can be viewed in true 3D using modern S-3D displays like 3D monitors, HDTVs, and more on the Internet. MTBS-TV's charm is its down to earth style and level headed analysis on the S-3D gaming industry.

The first episode features coverage of James Cameron's Avatar video game in 3D, an explanation of how the game works with different S-3D technologies, and more.

"I joke about the production values - I've never taken myself too seriously.  However, there is nothing cooler than to show video clips of games in S-3D or having our logo pop out of the screen.  It's really a lot of fun to watch and make these videos.  However, MTBS isn't the only pioneer in this.  One of our members, Yuriy Nikshych, has been at this for some time with Stereo3D News.  He practically begged us to do the same.  What gamers ask, gamers get."

Neil Schneider's second responsibility is being the Executive Director of the non-profit S-3D Gaming Alliance (S3DGA).  With the sole interest of making S-3D gaming successful in the home, S3DGA was launched in September of this year at the 3D Entertainment Summit, and is the recognized voice for the stereoscopic 3D gaming industry.

To date, S3DGA members include DDD, iZ3D, RealD, Sensio, XpanD, John Peddie Research, Blitz Games Studios, TDVision Corp. and more.  Leading advisory board members include Habib Zargarpour, Senior Art Director for Electronic Arts, and Neil Trevett, President of the Khronos Group and VP of Mobile Content at NVIDIA.

"I'm very proud of what S3DGA and MTBS have achieved. While we are supportive of other organizations writing reports about the S-3D gaming industry, it's equally if not  more important to actually be in the trenches with game developers and gamers alike. This is what our three year track record is based on."

S3DGA members receive a complimentary copy of the U-DECIDE Initiative report. Nearly 80 pages in length, it features actual customer feedback from traditional 2D gamers and experienced stereoscopic 3D gamers.  Considered one of the most influential and informative reports in S-3D gaming, it was co-developed with AMD, Blitz Games Studios, The Game Creators, iZ3D, Guild Software, and Meant to be Seen.

Neil Schneider will be attending the 2010 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, January 5-10, 2010 and meeting arrangements can be scheduled via Carol Warren.

This is great to hear.   I know that everyone who knows you has been greatly concerned.

Now, you can once again look to the future.   I had a great meeting with Eli Jarra, and we discussed some possibilities as to some things that we might all create together.  Eli and I can schlep equipment, so don't worry about that.   Just let us know when you have recovered to the point where you can safely and comfortably join us.

Though progress is slow, every day I am getting stronger. Appetite has returned. I tire easily, but that comes with the territory. Will require daily ingestion of blood thinners and blood pressure meds the rest of my days, but am glad to be living and breathing. The simple pleasures of life seem a lot more meaningful now. Sitting in the morning sun sipping coffee. Hearing birds singing in the trees. Watching another scathingly funny episode of comedic genius Larry David's "Curb Your Enthusiasm" (available on www.ch131.com > TV Shows > Curb Your Enthusiasm) and laughing to tears. It's all good.

Thank you all for your support especially Kerrigan and Melanie Mahan and Dr. George Ward who were instrumental in the entire process. Thanks to Raenette Dewart with Dr. Miller who went way out of her way to make arrangements for my mom while she was in Palo Alto.  And thanks especially to Dr. Craig Miller, his surgical team, and the phenomenal Stanford University Medical Center staff whose compassion and professionalism shone brightly to usher me back to health. Thanks to my cousins Esther, Evelyn, Joel, and friends Chuck and Paul who lifted my spirits with timely visits to my hospital room. Now it's onward and upward.

Dear 3D Friends,

Emilie Claire was born 11-24 at noon, 6lbs 1oz, 18 inches.
Marie is doing fine and generally had a very easy natural birth (especially
compared to Kevin ;-). We came home from the hospital yesterday
afternoon. My sister Robin flew down from Fremont just in time
to be in the delivery room for the birth! (Having given birth to two kids of
her own is invaluable family experience in the delivery room).
Marie's mom, Jacqueline flew in from France on the same day
(by coincidence) and will be here one month to help us ;-)

We want to wish you all a Happy Thanksgiving.

With the newborn, this will be a very special one for us.
We are happy to have the whole family together to celebrate it..
including 3 proud grandparents and my sister and her family.

Love to you & yours.

At the last SCSC meeting Ray Zone shot a couple of little 3D Video Get Well messages for Abe Perstein and Jim Long (using Susan's Fuji 3D camera). In case anyone else in the club would like to see how these came out, we had to put them on an upload/download site, as they are too large for an attachment.

Below are the links to get the downloads:

Description: Get Well Jim - Fuji 3D AVI video from the Stereo Club
You can use the following link to retrieve the file (you have to download it):

http://www.sendspace.com/file/ul108o

Description: Get Well 3D AVI to Abe (Fuji 3D format)
You can use the following link to retrieve the file (you have to download it):

http://www.sendspace.com/file/lrqsud

Note that, depending on the player used, you will get a normal flat video, two videos in different windows, or, with StereoMovie Maker you can get a 3D video in your choice of viewing formats. Stereoscopic Player must work as well, just haven't tried it myself.

Enjoy,

Has anyone heard about this Japanese high-speed high-res, full-color video camera with a 2000-frame-per-second shooting rate that apparently does not require a lot of light for shooting? In the attached demo (see attached video file), a yellow balloon is filled with water and then pierced. The balloon disappears from around the water. Amazing! I can only imagine this in stereo.

Anyone have thoughts about precisely syncing a pair of these to capture high-speed subjects?

Abe Perlstein

P.S. I was discharged from Stanford University Medical Center a few days ago. While my open heart surgery to repair the mitral valve was unsuccessful (it was just too far gone), a mechanical valve took its place and I am now on the road to recovery nesting with friends in Morro Bay until I am well enough to return home.  Thanks for the outpouring of support these past weeks. It helped a lot to keep my sagging spirits afloat.

I'm writing this for Jack Laxer, who does not have a computer or email.

He has about 25 rolls of Kodachrome 64, 36 exposure (KR-36) for sale. This is from the last batch produced Sept 2009, and has been refrigerated since new. This is the regular, not professional, Kodachrome.

Since Kodachrome was discontinued, dealers (where you can find them) are selling this film for about $15 a roll.

Jack is offering his at $7 a roll. Call him at 310-459-1213 if you are interested.

He checked with Dwayne's photo (the only Kodachrome processor) and they say they will offer KR processing until the end of 2010. Last chance to shoot some of this legendary film.

Hi 3-D Club Members,

Just a note to tell you that we got a few more 100% to the club donated items to sell. We would rather not hang on to them for a year, so I'm bringing them to the club tonight to see if there is some interest. If not sold tonight we can list them in the "3D News". With potential large expenses coming up, donations like these are very welcome, and the club can use the cash!

1) A TDC 116 Projector in very good condition. In original case, so very clean. Has harder to find 4" (rather than 5") lenses, which are much more desirable for home projection (larger picture at a shorter distance). New polarizers (donated by Reel 3-D) installed by me this morning. Tested and working well. Asking $350.00  (100% goes to the club!)

2) A TDC Project-Or-View. Looks like it's all there, and in fairly good condition. No power cord, so could not test it. As-is. $100 or best offer (100% goes to the club).

3) A Stereo Realist Model 81 Projector. A rare projector with high quality 3.5" lenses. No case. Lamps and fan work. Overall very good condition, except rotating slide carrier is damaged. Best fix would be to remove it completely and convert  it to use a TDC deluxe carrier. AS-is. $100 or best offer. (100% goes to the club).

You may view (and buy) these items tonight at the meeting. I'll be able to demo and answer questions.

Yours In DDDepth,

DDDavid Starkman

P.S. Susan reminds you all that she'll be selling December Banquet tickets at the club tonight. $30 tonight. $35 after Dec. 10. Bring cash or checks! Thanks!

Dear Family & Friends,

You are recieving this message because you are on my short list of contacts I'd like to keep in the loop following my open heart surgery at Stanford University Medical Center in Palo Alto, California to repair a failing mitral valve. Upon completion of surgery and following the first day or so in intensive care and recovery, I will have my mom---who will be flying out to help me in the two weeks after the surgery--call my dear friends, Kerrigan and Melanie Mahan of Morro Bay with an update. In turn, Kerrigan will send out an e-mailed update to people on my short list.

I expect to be going in for pre-op procedures, Nov. 12th, then surgery on the 13th. I should be in the hospital for at least five days, then transition to an on-campus temporary residence facility for another five to seven days. I don't yet have the number for that place, but hope to get it to you. After I leave Stanford, I'll be staying with my dear friends, Kerrigan and Melanie Mahan in Morro Bay, CA. for about one week or slightly longer. I will not be checking e-mail nor my home or cel voicemail boxes during my time up at Stanford. Should there be a dire need to reach me prior to my return back to home in Los Osos, please leave a message at my home number voicemail at 805-528-8585. I will check it periodically when I reach Morro Bay. Or, in an emergency (only), you may call my mom's cel at 860-712-1783 (please limit calls to between 9:30AM and 9:00PM, Pacific Standard Time).

Just so you'll know, I'm in excellent hands with Dr. Craig Miller, the cardiothoracic surgeon. They say I'll eventually feel ten years younger. I wonder if I'll look ten years younger?

Best Regards,
Abe
