I am currently looking to fill the
following position at DIRECTV located in
DIRECTV Engineering is seeking
a Database Administrator to join the Systems Integration team. The
Database Administrator will be well versed in database administration
practices and principles. The Database Administrator will share the
responsibility of overall database support in developing, integrating, and
operating homegrown applications. This position will be an integral part of a
very successful team of engineers that are responsible for the development,
integration, and management of a core component within DIRECTV®.
The Database Administrator will be
responsible for the following:
- Assisting the 24/7 operations staff
in troubleshooting performance issues by evaluating the behavior of
database instances. Including tasks such as investigating I/O
bottlenecks, tuning instance parameters, identifying poorly structured
queries, and most of all bird-dogging vendor support when issues arise
that are outside our scope of view.
- Partner with Software
Developers to engineer suitable database schemas fit for newly designed
software applications.
- Continuously monitor those
environments to ensure the choices were correct as the applications scale.
- Provide assistance with data
mart environments. The activities will include organizing
database layouts, optimizing the environment to meet performance needs,
and diagnosing problems that surface in the environment.
- Audit and optimize all database
environments which will include items such as index performance, database
fragmentation, security policies, and overall health of each database
environment.
- Research ways in which
Operations can more proactively monitor their environments to prevent
avoidable problems from occurring. This may involve evaluating software
tools, developing UNIX scripts, and writing documentation (e.g. SOPs -
Standard Operating Procedures).
- Install database vendor
software/patches on Development, Systems Integration, and Production
environments.
- Evaluate new patch releases
from the various database vendors to understand the relevance to our
environments and make recommendations on their applicability.
- Within the scope of this job,
consider ways in which you can improve the DIRECTV®
products and the overall customer experience.
REQUIREMENTS
- Bachelor's degree in Computer
Science/Information Systems.
- At least five years experience
with Oracle 8i/9i/10g database administration.
- Experience with Oracle RAC, Oracle
DataGuard, IBM DB2, and/or Sybase is highly desirable.
- Thorough familiarity with
archiving/restoration strategies and tools is absolutely essential.
- Any Experience with the
following tools such as Embarcadero DBArtisan, Quest Toad, and other
analytical tools is a plus.
- Intermediate experience in a
UNIX (HP-UX/Linux) environment is a must as is a working knowledge of UNIX
scripting (e.g. ksh or bash).
- Ability to work on simultaneous
projects, meet project deadlines, work well as a team member, and work
well under pressure.
- Because of the nature of the
broadcast business, on-call support will be required.
- Strong verbal and written
communication skills.
- Minimum travel will be
required.
