Does anyone know the exact settings to make the Users under Macintosh
HD/System Folder/Preferences/Multi User/Multi User Cache/User
disappear? In this folder I find as many as 200+ users that
accumulate over a short period of time. The regular users folder that
is in the Macintosh HD folder seems to disappear on some of my
labhand computers but not all the time which is fine because it
doesn't seem to accumulate as many as the other users folder.
I think it is worthwhile to mention in the documentation that when
you clear the "users" folder, and you are using a machine that
boots into OS X, you will delete all your documents. Case in
point, on my TiBook I usually use OS X for most everything, but I
decided to boot into OS 9 to test LabHand a wee bit.
Unfortunately it slipped my mind that all my documents are
stored in the "users" folder, and when I set LabHand to clear the
users folder on logout...yeah, you get the idea. Severe Badness.
Most people probably a) don't dual boot with OS X and b) aren't
stupid enough to do this but I think it's worth mentioning....if it
can save one person right?
I work for a high school that has iMacDV's MacOS 9.2.2, 256 MB RAM,
running Macintosh Manager 1.4. I cannot run the UMAX ASTRA 6450
scanner under a user log-in correctly. I installed the application
under the users log-in which did work but am told by the system
administrator that would create massive traffic due to the
preferences each user would send to the server each time they logged
in. So we both sat down and tried to implement our labhand software
which I am told "didn't create a new set of managed preference folders"!
I am back to the drawing board since my fix didn't work, but I can't
get the LABHAND to work either.
Any help greatly appriated.

I have LabHand installed on iMac's of all flavors, tray and slot
loading, along with G3 AIO's, 5400's and 5500's and have not seen this
type of behavior yet. I've got LabHand set to only update once per
day. Could this behavior be caused by LabHand comparing the HD to the
update folder periodically?
All machines are running either Mac OS 8.6 or Mac OS 9.2.2. Some may be
at Mac OS 9.1, but definitely none still at 9.0.4. I'm taking them all
to 9.2.2 as quickly as possible to eliminate the MS Office "out of
memory" errors. My main reason for installing it is the CD ejection and
showing the Control Strip.

I installed, configured, and tested out LabHand today (finally!) and am
interested in using it. The CD-eject and screen bit depth features
alone will really help.
There was a problem for me, though, in that something LabHand does
accesses the workstation HD about every second. It sounds like a watch
ticking (double-ticking, actually). Not too annoying on one machine,
but in a labfull of stations, it's more than annoying. Of course, I'm
concerned about the wear on the drives, as well.
I'm using iMac/400 workstations at OS 9.04, MacMgr 1.4.1 on ASIP 6.3.3.
Everything else runs peachy, and removing LabHand eliminated the
ticking; verified on 6 different client machines.
Hi all,
How is everyone? I hope you all had a nice Christmas/New Year's break.
Down to business...
LabHand b6 expired at the end of December. You can grab a patch to update to
b7 from here:
http://www.chac.qld.edu.au/~smacdonald/sw/labhand/beta/labhand_b7_patch.hqx
b7 is virtually identical to b6, but b7 won't expire until the end of
February.
If you have any suggestions or bug reports, get them in soon, because I'll
be releasing the Real Thing, Real Soon Now.
Best regards,
Stewart

That desktop was only about 15 minutes old. You should see it now! The
upside of getting Tiffany (the TiBook) is that I can work on LabHand as I'm
driving to work of a morning. So you should be seeing some real progress

Hello,
I attempted to go to Stewart's site yesterday for the current Lab Hand but
couldn't get to the download page
<http://www.chac.qld.edu.au/~smacdonald/sw/labhand/getlabhand.php>
I can get to the LabHand description page and can even get the docs, but not

I emailed Stewart but as yet no response.
Have tried getting the d/l on two different machines, two different OSs, two
different browsers...
Anybody know what might be happening?

Hi all,
I'm please to announce Beta 6 of LabHand.
I was hoping to put more features into this version, but my life ended up
getting in the way. I pretty much just released this version because the
last version will expire soon. I hope to release another version within the
next week (or so) with more features in it. I'm also hoping to release a
"proper" version soon (as opposed to all these betas), so if you have bug
reports or feature suggestions, get them in quick.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
This is what's new in LabHand:
Bugs fixed in this version:
* Empty CD Trays are no longer ejected on logout
* "TempResXXX" files are now properly cleared up.
* Bug that prevented LabHand from auto-updating itself is fixed
New features in this version:
* "Clear Users Folder on Logout" option
I've also release LabHand Prefs Editor 1.0.2:
* Password is now bulleted on the main screen, but it's still in
clear text when you edit it
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Get more info here:
<http://www.chac.qld.edu.au/~smacdonald/sw/labhand/>
You can also join the LabHand/File Blaster mailing list (it's VERY low
volume):
<http://www.chac.qld.edu.au/~smacdonald/sw/fb/list.html>
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Thanks to Mark Ingram, Bryan VonDeylen, and Tim Kamps for their feature
suggestions and bug reports.
Best regards,
Stewart

Hi All,
I'm proud to announce the latest version of File Blaster.
File Blaster 1.5.1 incorporates the following changes:
* Added "quitWhenFinished" AppleScript command.
* Added better support for Macintosh Manager 2's folder structure.
* Added a spiffy new Online Help section.
* Carbon version now available, for running natively on OS X.
More information can be found on my ultra-new, ultra-shiny web site:
<http://homepage.mac.com/ugtech/>
Note:
File Blaster 1.5.1 differs only slightly from the semi-publicly released
1.5. 1.5.1 fixes a problem with the application's icons, and it adjusts the
layout of one window to be more Aqua-compliant. If you have 1.5, and you
don't care if it has an incorrect icon, you don't need 1.5. There is no
difference in functionality between the two versions.
As per normal, if you have any questions about File Blaster, drop me a line.
Best Regards,
Stewart Macdonald

Oops! Apparently there was a bug in the LabHand Prefs Editor application.
I've fixed the bug, and have a new version here:

If you downloaded LabHand, you'll need to get the new version of LabHand

the Prefs Editor.
Sorry for any inconvenience,

Hello all,
As some of you may know, I've been working on a little utility that
integrates with Macintosh Manager. It's called LabHand, and you can find out
more about it from here:
<http://www.chac.qld.edu.au/~smacdonald/sw/labhand/>
I've just finished LabHand 1.0b5, which is the fifth version in LabHand's
public beta series.
LabHand works with both MM 1.x and MM 2.x.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
LabHand currently has these features
* Client Updating:
LabHand will connect to a server and download software updates
* Machine-specific Preferences:
When a user logs in, files from a folder on the local Hard Drive are copied
to the user's Preferences folder. This is useful for applications that
require machine-specific serial numbers (ie, a unique serial number for each
machine). You can put different serial numbers into different preferences
file on each computer, and have that file copied to the user's preference
folder when they log in.
* Preference Deletion:
When a user logs in or out, specified items are deleted from their
Preferences folder. Good for getting rid of Web Browser cache files. Using
this and the above feature, you could have scanner preferences copied to a
user's preferences folder on login, and then deleted when they log out. This
means that you won't have gigs of useless files stored on your server.
* Control the Control Strip on Login:
You can tell LabHand to either show or hide (or neither) the Control Strip
when a user logs in. This feature now works properly.
* Automatic ejection of CDs at logout:
If a CD is in the drive when a user logs out, it gets ejected. This feature
now works smoothly too.
* Changing Monitor Bit Depth (the colours of the monitor):
LabHand can change the monitor to a pre-determined bit depth when users log
in, and back again when they log out.
* Changing Sound Volume:
LabHand can change the sound volume at login and logout.
* AppleScript Commands
You can ask LabHand for the current Username and the current Workgroup name.
More details on this will come with a later beta, so for now, just open up
LabHand Extension with Script Editor, and have a look at the syntax.
* Control Strip Module:
LabHand now has a control strip module. Currently it has only two usable
actions, Update Client (which forces LabHand to connect to the Update server
and update the client machine) and Change Location (which lets users change
Location Manager locations). Both of these actions are only available in
System Access or on the Login screen.
* Setting Internet Preferences:
The following Internet Preferences can be set;
Web Home Page
Web Search Page
HTTP Proxy
--> No Proxy Domains
Web Download Folder (this feature works most of the time!)
This option is only useful if you use applications that get their
preferences from the "Internet Preferences" file. Internet Explorer does,
and Netscape Communicator can use some of the settings.
* Restarting if the Workgroup Documents Volume can't be Unmounted:
If a user logs in, opens Internet Explorer, and then IE crashes, certain
files will be left open on the WG Docs volume. This means that the volume
can't be ejected. If you have users logging in using their own usernames and
passwords, the next user to log in on that machine won't be able to access
their documents, because the machine is already connected to the server as a
different user. With this option enabled, LabHand checks to see if the WG
Docs volume is still mounted after the user logs out. If it is, LabHand
tries to eject it. If the volume can't be unmounted, LabHand displays a
message and restarts the machine in 5 seconds.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
LabHand Prefs Editor
LabHand now comes with a Preference Editor. You no longer need to use
ResEdit to edit preferences.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Known Issues
The "Set Web Download Folder" feature is successful about 90% of the time.
I'm working on the other 10%
There may be bugs. Please let me know when you find them.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
So, what are you waiting for?!?!? Head on over to:
<http://www.chac.qld.edu.au/~smacdonald/sw/labhand/>
and download it. While you're waiting for it to finish downloading, read the
proper documentation:
<http://www.chac.qld.edu.au/~smacdonald/sw/labhand/beta/docs.html>
Please Note: the documentation is a bit of a mess. I'll sort it out when
LabHand approaches its proper feature set.
LabHand (and File Blaster) also has a mailing list:
<http://www.chac.qld.edu.au/~smacdonald/sw/fb/list.html>
LabHand beta 5 will expire at the end of November. I'll have a new version
ready by then (in theory).
If you have any questions, comments, suggestions, queries, nice recipes, or
bug reports, please feel free to contact me.
Best regards,
Stewart

Thanks, Stewart! We're crazy about your software. We're finally able to take
advantage of the Sherlock search functionality with Mac Manager thanks to "the
Blaster".
I'm in the process of reviewing Mac Administrator software from Hi Resolution.
(We're just about at our wits end with Mac Manager - way too much hoop jumping
for me!) Mac Administrator comes out of the UK and I've found it's being used
at our many of our universities, but have not seen it being used in K-12
schools. Do you have any experience with it or know anything about it or the
vendor, Hi Resolution. I'd appreciate any insight you might have.
Thank you,

Hi all,
In case any of you three are interested, I've got a small (very small)
update to File Blaster.
Someone asked for additional AppleScript functionality, so they got it.
File Blaster 1.4.1 adds one extra AppleScript command "quitWhenFinished". If
you call this at any time, File Blaster will quit when all current Blasts
are finished.
If you call "quitWhenFinished" with no Blasts running, File Blaster WILL NOT
quit.
<http://www.chac.qld.edu.au/~smacdonald/sw/fb/files/fb1dot4dot1patch.hqx>
How is everyone? Busy at work?
I'm working on the next version of File Blaster in my spare time. Any
feature requests?
