Subject: [labmanagers] Information Request - Prospering in Hard Times

I am preparing a presentation (for the next ALMA Pittcon Symposium) on how to succeed during hard times and hope you would share your experiences (the situation, how you responded, what worked/what did not).  I would use the responses in my presentation without any indication of the person or organization involved. 

 

We face many challenges in today's business environment including reorganizations, downsizing and the general expectations that we deliver better quality information faster and with fewer analysts.  Many organizations are also expecting that each analyst be proficient in more than one analytical discipline, an expectation that is often resisted by staff members.  At times these expectations are to be met internally and without outside training or significant costs.  Have you had to help staff find new positions after a downsizing?; did you find yourself in a job search as your organization right-sized? Perhaps you have had to deal with globalization of the analytical team; what impact has that had on you and your team?  Or was there a very specific shorter-term business situation that offered learnings for you and your fellow lab managers?  I'm certain all our members have had to deal with many other difficult situations.  Please feel free to share any situation you feel has been particularly difficult.

 

My presentation has become more personal - my position at Arkema was eliminated in November. This is an opportunity to demonstrate what I have learned in dealing with more difficult situations.  Thanks for sharing!
