I need to purchase a TOC analyzer. The
material to be sampled is:
Aqueous
solution of NaCl, where NaCl concentration is 300 gram / liter (+/- 10)
Aqueous
solution of KCl, where KCl concentration is 300 gram / liter (+/- 10)
The TOC specification for these materials
is < 7 ppm by weight.
Sample frequency is 2 per week for each
material.
Does anyone have any recommendations,
either for or against?
I've posted a few notes in the past about work Delphinus has been
doing in education, in particular the recently held "Manager's Guide
to Laboratory Automation & Technology Management" Course.
After some consideration, we've moved all of the educational work to a
non-profit - it just made more sense to do it that way. So,the point
of this note is to make you aware that the organization "Institute for
Laboratory Automation" exists as a 501(c)3 non-profit.
The web site is http://www.InstituteLabAuto.org
I can be contacted via j.liscouski@...
look us up!

It has always been my experience that in order for lab personnel to
conform to a particular method such as keeping their notebooks up to
date and organized training sessions with frequent follow up will help
them. Once clear expectations are set of what the notebook should
look like, with examples, then you have set the bar. Now you can let
them try and hold them accountable if performance is not met. With
frequent follow up eventually they will get it.
That's just a thought.

used to have scientists fill out their Laboratory Notebooks

tying compliance to performance evaluation. Any thoughts on this would
be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Why did you reject other LIMS systems? How did implementation of

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I am presently going through the same process.
It is... time-consuming.
Early in the process, my IT Department made
it clear that they strongly prefer a LIMS that does not require ANY additional
software be installed on users' computers. In other words, they want
a web-based system. That eliminated a couple of LIMS which used MS
Access as the front end and also a few that required Citrix-like emulation
software. StarLIMS has a white paper on their web site titled "Web-based
vs. Web-enabled LIMS: What is the Difference?" Your IT people
might find it interesting. www.starlims.com/news/TechnicalNotes.htm
I found listings of LIMS vendors at www.limsfinder.com
and limsource.com. There is a sidebar on limsfinder that says "Order
your Free LIMS Kit CD." Don't waste your time. I have
requested that CD multiple times and it has yet to appear in my mailbox.
How to choose a LIMS? Limsfinder has
a search engine that got me going in the right direction. Go to their web
site and click on the "Suppliers" link near the top left corner.
Most vendors support multiple database servers, and it's a good idea
to ask your IT people up front if they have a preference. Beyond that,
I've not found a way to systematically rank the vendors. Two suppliers
have so far done internet demos for us. The first one was well received
by the lab people, but rejected by IT due to the MS Access front end. The
second one, a web-base system, was well received by IT, but the lab people
hated it. The vendor with whom I am now starting to talk was selected
because the head of our R&D Department was impressed with a demo he
saw at the last PittCon. Bottom line: The shotgun method is not efficient.
The capabilities of the LIMS I have looked
at is staggering. All vendors anticipate being required to port data
from your existing electronic recordkeeping system, whatever it may be,
into their LIMS. Every vendor will broach the idea of interfacing
your analyzers directly to the LIMS, but this does not seem to be cost
effective unless that analyzer is heavily utilized. Most vendors
offer their version of "MyLIMS Boot camp," at either your site
or theirs. One of our driving forces is to have a system for generating
Certificates of Analyses for our product shipments.
ERCO Worldwide's chemical manufacturing
facility in Port Edwards Wisconsin manufactures anhydrous chlorine, 50%
NaOH, 50% KOH and 36% HCl. I am looking for a lab capable of performing
QC analyses for these products using ASTM methods. If interested,
please contact me and I will provide details.

a NEW COURSE for lab managers and directors, is now available from
Delphinus, Inc.
The successful use of automation and information technologies in
laboratory applications depends as much upon the policies and goals
defined by lab management as it does on the skills of those
implementing projects. Whether you are responsible for one lab or a
laboratory complex, setting the guidelines within which automation is
implemented across lab organizations is fundamental to cost-effective,
successful, and supportable systems.
The purpose of this short-course is to introduce management to lab
automation: what it is, management's role in laboratory automation,
the policies that need to be developed to help ensure successful
projects, process models of laboratory work that can be used to define
automation needs and product requirements, and an overview of the
technologies used.
The benefits of the course include:
• Improving the effectiveness of automation systems, and their ability
to be successfully implemented and supported
• Improving the interaction between labs and company departments or
customers that either need controlled access to reported data, or to
submit information. Lab managers have to address both internal
operational issues and the need to interact with customers and other
corporate departments
• Reducing laboratory operating costs, and improving Return On
Investment in automation / computing technology
• Meeting the demands of regulatory agencies
• A basis for coordinating the work of IT groups, outside contractors
& equipment vendors
• Protect / enhance the value of the labs intellectual property, and
• Make the most effective use of people's talents
Since the participants are expected to bring with them a range of
experiences and perspectives, we expect this course to be interactive.
Laboratory automation is often viewed as a technology effort.
Successful projects will depend on managements ability to set goals
and policies to guide the development of systems that can be
integrated, reduce operational costs, and meet their goals. Managers
have an active role in lab automation projects, and should understand
how those projects can be used to increase the lab's effectiveness,
and the lab's ability to work with other organizations.
For more information see: http://www.Delphinus-LAE.com/course
Our company is in the process of evaluating LIMS vendors.
I would greatly appreciate input from other members who have been through this
process. What LIMS systems did you evaluate? How did you go about
evaluating the various vendors? Which LIMS system did you eventually
select? Why did you select that particular system? Why did you
reject other LIMS systems? How did implementation of the system you chose
proceed (time frame, problems, etc.)?
Too often laboratory automation is viewed in terms of technologies and
products, the things people use to implement projects. What is
overlooked is the planning that is needed on a management level [often
senior management] to provide a basis for the successful development
of laboratory automation systems.
This guide is the start of a process of establishing policies,
practices, and operational models that provides a basis for the
definition, design, development and implementation of lab automation
systems. Successful systems, those that meet their objectives, are
supportable and can be gracefully upgraded as needed, are not the
result of fix-the-bottleneck methodologies. They are the result of
design-against-a-plan methods.
That planning should be the province of lab management working to
provide systems that will enable those in the lab to work at their
fullest level of capability, to be productive. The material you are
reading is the starting point. The benefits of that planning include:
* improving the effectiveness of automation systems, and their
ability to be supported,
* reducing laboratory operating costs and improving ROI,
* meeting the demands of regulatory agencies,
* a basis for coordinating the work of outside contractors &
equipment vendors,
* protect / enhance the value of the labs intellectual property, and,
* make the most effective use of people's talents.

Last year I attended my first ALMA conference in Portland, and found it to be exactly what you are looking for. I was surrounded by people that manage laboratories, and found that as diverse as our labs are, the key challenges are pretty much the same. Each speaker/class/roundtable discussion applied directly to my position. The conference is next week, very short notice for you if you aren't already coming, but keep it in mind for next year...

Larger UPS units can be purchased from several places - look for units
that are scaled for home entertainment systems. One caution - typical
UPS units intended for home / office use aren't capable of handling
equipment with heating elements [ovens, etc.]. They consume too much
power.
