Subject: [lula] MO drive beta testers wanted
dank@...
Send Email Send Email

Olympus is looking for power users to beta test their MO drive
under Linux. The drive is a 3.5", 640 megabyte, external SCSI unit.
It's presumably about as fast as a hard drive, and is bootable.

They have asked me to contact the Los Angeles area Linux User Groups
and help them rustle up some beta testers.

Each LUG is invited to send me a list of people who fit
the following criteria:
1) must be able to plug in an external SCSI drive
2) must be willing to install the Olympus drive and stress it
    out through realistic usage
3) must agree to fill out a questionaire at the
    end of the beta period

Olympus will select the beta testers from this list. There
are a limited number of drives (20 or so?) available.

When the beta period is over, the beta testers would get to keep
the drive, as long as they used it and gave the required feedback.

So anyone who meets those criteria, please get together with your
LUG and get your name on their list, and get them to send it to
me by next Friday!

Subject: Linuxatlax Networking tutorial Sat Oct 14
ibk@...
Send Email Send Email

I am most pleased to announce that John H Terpstra (of the Samba team and
VP at Turbolinux) will be putting on a full day practical networking
tutorial at our next meeting.

During this session he will build a sample corporate network using Linux.
This will include the deployment of several boxes including two fire-walls
(to setup a "DMZ" for the internal network) as well as other boxes with
these services; DNS, FTP, Web, Squid, PostgreSQL, Mail (external), Mail
(Internal), Samba, DHCP, IMAP, and finally the incorporation of NT4
workstation along with Linux based workstations (us!).

This session will be very interactive- be forewarned as John will ask
for volunteers from the floor to help speed things up. To quote him
"Better tell all my victims (attendees) that they can come along expecting
to get involved." (don't worry- John won't bite!)

Anyone of you who wants to bring your own notebook/computer along to get
patched into the "model company" network should and is encouraged to do
so.

The basic idea is to deploy a network with this topology;

------------
| Internet |-------|
------------       |
               ------------
               | Firewall |
               ------------
                    |         ------------
        ----------------------| Firewall |-----------------
        |           |         ------------        |       |
    ---------   ---------                     --------- ---------
    | Box-A |   | Box-B |                     | Box-C | | Box-D |
    ---------   ---------                     --------- ---------

This will be built using the following:

1. An internet connection
2. 2 x Machines with dual ethernet for use as firewalls
3. 2 x HUBs
4. 4 x Boxes as follows:
         Box-A: Linux - DNS, FTP, Web
         Box-B: Linux - Squid, PostgreSQL, Mail (external)
         Box-C: Linux - Mail (Internal), Samba, DNS, DHCP, IMAP
         Box-D: MS Windows NT4 Workstation

The idea is that by the end of the day attendees will understand the
techniques, practical aspects and pitfalls of deploying such a network.

And of course as usual we should have lots of fun as we learn.

Look forward to seeing you all there on Sat Oct 14 at our eLinux digs.
More info as this develops will be posted over at
http://www.linuxatlax.org in the meetings section.

Pass the information on as you like. Thanks for your attention.

best regards,

Ismet

Hi Larry,
check out http://www.lalugs.org, it's a directory of all the local
user groups. Many of our groups sponsor periodic installfests,
and would be interested in helping you out.

16 megabytes isn't a whole lot! You'll need to slim down your
installations (one tiny writeup on this subject is
http://www.linuxdoc.org/HOWTO/mini/Small-Memory.html )
or use a specialized distribution that caters to the low-memory crowd.
One list of them is at
http://www.softpanorama.org/Freenix/minidistributions.shtml

Are you planning to run Linux on each of your computers?
Have you checked out http://www.seul.org/edu/ yet, btw?
Give me a call at 323 931 6717 if you want to chat.

I am very pleased to remind us all that the next meeting will feature Mr.
Chris Dollmont.

In the first hour he will be discussing tape backup and recovery methods.
He will be showcasing Amanda (The Advanced Maryland Automatic Network Disk
Archiver (http://www.amanda.org/) to connect/backup *nix boxen and NT
server file shares.

This will include a live demonstration with a Linux box / SCSI DAT
drive to connect to the NT box, as well as demonstrating remote Linux
client setup and backup. The emphasis will be on the important and
practical aspects of data backup and recovery.

In the second half of the morning session Mr. Dollmont will be
reviewing Mac OS X. This hour long session will walk us through the
basic features and design considerations as well as a demonstration of
Aqua, the GUI on top of OS X. We will be seeing how much like Unix this OS
is. Compatibility issues with OS 9 applications will be included.

The above morning session begins at 10 am and will conclude at 12:30 pm.

Mr. Dollmont is an excellent speaker/teacher with a deep understanding of
Linux, computers and day to day issues facing telecomunications
professionals. You won't be disappointed.

The afternoon session (from 1 pm to 4 pm) will be open, allowing for
an interactive workshop. Bring along any hardware that you are working
with. We have lots of table space, power strips and high speed Internet
access. If you can, please bring some long network patch cords to connect
to one of the two switches in the room. (20 foot in length would be
helpful).

The sessions are held at

Creative Computers
2555 West 190th Street
Torrance, CA 90504-6002

I have read that Mac OS X features some sort of centralized
management of all of the config files that are typically
scattered throughout Linux and Unix systems.

Will Chris be covering this? This could become a large advance
for open source if the other distros adopt this.

The Simi-Conejo Linux Users Group will be holding LUGFest IV on April 21st and
22nd, 2001, in Simi Valley, California.

A LUGFest is an opportunity for Linux users to demo Linux (or other Open
Source operating systems), Linux applications, attend seminars, and BOF (Birds
Of a Feather) sessions. Additionally, Linux vendors may participate and
show off their wares.

LUGFest III was held on October 28, 2000, and was a great success.
(See http://www.sclug.org/members/notes.cgi?date=10-28-2000-LUGFest3).
Approximately 350 Linux enthusiasts and a number of vendors attended over the
course of the afternoon.

We had people come from Orange County, Santa Barbara, Santa Clarita, the
South Bay area, all points in between, and also from out-of-state. Many Linux
vendors donated stuff for giveways and raffles. Vendors who came with their
wares were VA Linux, SGI, LinuxCare, LinuxBoxen, Mandrake, Parasoft, VMware,
Cobolt, LinuxSolve, Corel, Loki Games, Cosmo Engineering and Andern.org

If you have a special skill with Linux or a Linux application, or if you're
a Linux vendor who would like to show off his products, SCLUG would love
to have you participate in LUGFest IV! SCLUG is also looking for speakers on
Linux, Open Source, or other related subjects.

Due to the continually growing attendance from LUGFest to LUGFest, we've
changed the LUGFest to a two-afternoon event so more people can attend.

For more info, to register for LFIV, or to volunteer to do a demo, contact
gareth@..., or visit http://www.lugfest.org

OK, so the gcc on Red Hat 7.0 can't be used to compile the kernel
( you have to use what they call kgcc ). A lot of people have
given Red Hat flak for this and the C++ dynamic linking portability issue.

But I just noticed a real nice thing about the gcc on red hat 7.0:
it does better at stack tracebacks when a signal is received.

I often use the code fragments listed at the bottom of this email to force
a stack dump after a crash (not that I have many of them :-). Under older
gcc's,
it worked, but the stack was slightly screwed up, and it didn't
show the crash point reliably. For instance, here's a stack dump
from a program that calls crash_me() from main (where crash_me has
a null pointer reference) under Red Hat 6.2:

#0  0x402488c9 in __wait4 () from /lib/libc.so.6
#1  0x402a71cc in ?? () from /lib/libc.so.6
#2  0x401f7ccc in __libc_system (line=0xbfffee8c "gdb -batch -x gdbcmd ./mtserv
28026") at ../sysdeps/posix/system.c:136
#3  0x400578ac in system (line=0xbfffee8c "gdb -batch -x gdbcmd ./mtserv 28026")
at wrapsyscall.c:120
#4  0x804f87d in dump_stack (signum=11) at mtserv.cc:54
#5  0x401d5c48 in __restore () at
../sysdeps/unix/sysv/linux/i386/sigaction.c:127
#6  0x805043b in main (argc=3, argv=0xbffff8d4) at mtserv.cc:291

And here's the output under Red Hat 7.0:

#0  0x40260e69 in __wait4 () from /lib/libc.so.6
#1  0x402cce4c in __DTOR_END__ () from /lib/libc.so.6
#2  0x401f69d2 in __libc_system (line=0xbfffe95c "gdb -batch -x gdbcmd ./mtserv
16394") at ../sysdeps/posix/system.c:136
#3  0x4005b229 in system (line=0xbfffe95c "gdb -batch -x gdbcmd ./mtserv 16394")
at wrapsyscall.c:159
#4  0x804f0e6 in dump_stack (signum=11) at mtserv.cc:54
#5  0x4005907e in pthread_sighandler (signo=11, ctx={gs = 0, __gsh = 0, ...
oldmask = 2147483648, cr2 = 0}) at signals.c:97
#6  <signal handler called>
#7  0x804f104 in crash_me () at mtserv.cc:63
#8  0x804fc4e in main (argc=3, argv=0xbffff464) at mtserv.cc:291
#9  0x401c4f31 in __libc_start_main (main=0x804f954 <main>, argc=3,
ubp_av=0xbffff464, init=0x804c588 <_init>, fini=0x809f9d8 <_fini>,
rtld_fini=0x4000e274
<_dl_fini>, stack_end=0xbffff45c) at ../sysdeps/generic/libc-start.c:129

The output under Red Hat 7.0 with the new gcc is far more informative;
it correctly identifies the exact line of the crash.

             signal(SIGBUS, dump_stack);
...
}

void dump_stack(int signum)

     (void) signum;

     sprintf(s, "gdb -batch -x gdbcmd %s %d", argv0, getpid());
     printf("Crashed! Starting debugger to get stack dump. You may need to kill
-9 this process afterwards.\n");
     system(s);
     exit(1);

Slight change of plans, since the PIM demo wont take more than 15-20
minutes. Chris Little is gonna talk about gbuild for a while. Gbuild
is a nifty tool that takes the current CVS source for applications and
builds rpms. Should be interesting. Hope to see everyone there.

If Home Depot can do so can we-

Lilax chat is now open 24 hours a day - point your IRC client to
linuxatlax.org or 209.151.230.139 and join the #lilax channel.
For example, in ircII, x-chat, or tkirc:

/server 209.151.230.139
/join #lilax

If you have questions about IRC please see

http://www.irchelp.org/

If you have X running, X-Chat is good client to use
(http://xchat.org)

If you have some time please join in when you can to help others with
questions etc... we'll make sure to log the sessions and hopefully create
some method to search them as an additional information resource.

If a few of the experts in the group can intermittently populate the
server we can provide a real-time help service for the groups here
in LA- and now we can have folks on the East coast join in given the new
and improved hours of operation.

Just connect then you can accomplish all sorts of things including
executing scripts, sharing files and much more, in addition to plain old
chat.

If you have any questions or thoughts about this please let me know.

Thanks.

Ismet
