Reply-To: sclug@...

As an end of summer celebration (or belated Linux 10th anniversary
celebration, or whatever), SCLUG is having an extra meeting/barbecue on
Saturday, September 15th. Note - members of other LUGs are more than
welcome to attend! If you're on a different LUG mailing list, feel free
to pass this along.

It will be held at the home of Orv Beach in Simi Valley. The address is
3008 Waukegan Ave.

Start time is noon, with barbecue running between about 1 and 3.
Finish time is whenever people get tired of hanging around. If you feel
like helping set up, show up around 11.

SCLUG will provide sodas, burgers and dogs (no, there won't be roast
penguin available..) Please bring chips, or salads, or desserts!
(Please email me directly with what your bringing; I'll keep a list and
make sure we don't get 8 gallons of potato salad...)

There will be tables provided (if someone has folding chairs, we can use
them), plus LAN drops and power for those bringing computers (we ARE
geeks after all...) Internet connectivity will be provided.

Directions to 3008 Waukegan (it's about 2 miles north of the Nortel
building where SCLUG meets):

118 Freeway to Tapo Canyon. Exit and head NORTH. The second light is
Avenida Simi. Turn right (just past the open field).

Waukegan is the second street on the left, and 3008 is on the corner.
Note: parking is limited on Waukegan, but plentiful on the side street.
Enter via the side gate by the garage.

[If you're going to attend, please RSVP to me so we know how much food
to buy!]

Looking forward to see all of you there!

mice.... ;-) ]

IRC (Internet Relay Chat) is a fun way to keep in touch with fellow LUG
members, and other people worldwide. Some of us from the various LUGs in
the general Los Angeles area hang out on the server irc.openprojects.net
on the channel #lalugs. We don't have any set time for chats, just whenever
people happen to be online and have something to say. Don't fret if someone
doesn't answer right away, sometimes people are away doing other things.

For help with IRC, you should visit www.irchelp.org.

Don't forget - Saturday is the regularly scheduled SCLUG meeting at the
CNM/Nortel building in Simi Valley.

On the agenda:

o Gareth is going to (attempt to) show Linux booting on his Dreamcast.

o Jeff is going to demo the beta of StarOffice 6.0

If there's time left, we'll let you fire up your computer and mess
around a bit (but no full installs please; we won't have time).

Okay for those of you that werent aware, despite what the web site says
there is a SCLUG meeting this Saturday. Alexander Guy will be talking
about OpenBSD.

On another note, the SCLUG web site is in a state of brokenness at the
moment so dont expect to see up to date information such as calendar
events there.

Hi,

Several weeks ago I learned about the public comment period regarding
the Microsoft-DOJ settlement thanks to Dennis Powel and LinuxToday.

In that time I've been trying to spread the word to others.

I came across Dan Kegel's site with some more great info.

We need to band together the resources of all the LUGS and spread the
word, not just to fellow Linux users, but to everybody. This is an
issue that has consequences even for people that don't use computers.

I would like to see as many of our LUGS as we can join forces and
spread the word to fellow citizens.

One way is to try to get some media attention.

Time is short, we need to act now!

and have been considering a petition drive. Anyone who wants
to help, please join the ms-remedy mailing list mentioned
at that site.

Greetings,
First off I apologize if anyone receives this message more than once as I
am sending it to most of the LA LUGs list and I realize that many of you are
on multiple lists but I wanted to make sure I got the word out to
everyone.

Those that are unfamiliar with who I am, let me quickly introduce
myself. My name is Gareth Greenaway and I am the leader of the Simi
Conejo Linux Users Group. I am also the person that came up with the
LUG Fests that SCLUG has hosted for the past couple of years.

That being said, we (mostly me) are toying with, pondering, and planning
to host another LUG Fest and thought that other members of the LUG
community might like to be invovled (I know a number of you have already
mentioned it). Tomorrow (Wednesday Februrary 6 2002) at 9pm we will be
holding an irc meeting to discuss various aspects of a future LUG
fest and we invite anyone and everyone who might be interested to
attend. We will be hosting it on the open projects irc network
(irc.openprojects.org) in the #lugfest channel.

Once again, LUG Fest irc meeting in #lugfest on irc.openprojects.net
tomorrow at 9pm.

				 Thank you for your time.
				 Gareth Greenawy

Note: feel free to pass this along to any lists which I didnt address.

[LULA February 19th, 2002 Meeting Announcement - Please repost]

LULA (Linux Users of Los Angeles) presents:
"After ten years, CORBA is finally ready for prime time"

Speakers: Dan Kegel and Chris Smith

When: Tuesday, February 19, 2002, 7-9 pm

Where: Tom Bradley Center, 5213 West Pico Blvd, Los Angeles, CA

Cost: Free (but if you're not a LULA member, please rsvp to rsvp@... )

Summary:

CORBA, like RPC, DCOM, RMI, and more recently SOAP, is
glue used to tie together programs that run partly on one

used by large companies for many years. However,
only recently have high quality open source implementations
and good documentation become available.
Dan and Chris will introduce you to CORBA programming
with a couple of small demos and a war story or two.

Okay folks, its been more than two weeks since the last IRC meeting concerning
the LUG Fest (very soon to have a new name). Rather than the same
free form discussions that we've had prior I would like to set some
topics up a head of time that need touching on. I will hopefully have
a rough outline of what I would like the event to be like and anyone in
attendance will be more than welcome to comment on it.

We will meet at 9pm in #lugfest on the OpenProjects irc server
(irc.openprojects.net).

						 Thanks.
						 Gareth

Feel free to pass this along.

An excellent idea! I'll contact Midnight Special and make
sure they know about it; maybe they'd like to be involved somehow.

I now mention your idea on http://www.lalugs.org/#events
and will try to whip up interest.

Possibly. Or hand out copies of Linux... I can burn a bunch myself.

Peter, please let us know who you contact and what they say.

I emailed the Digital Village People (ooh, that didn't come out right :-)
about our Installfest, and offering to provide some info about the
local linux scene, but they did not respond.

> I can be there either or both days as necessary.

I have been coordinating, though I've been a little preoccupied.

I (with much help from Sharon Lake, thanks!) used Scribus
(http://freshmeat.net/projects/scribus/) to design a flyer,
http://www.lula.org/flyers/lulaflyer3.pdf advertizing the Lula Installfest.
(Comments welcome.)
I'll print up a stack of them to hand out, and will be on
the sidewalk in front of Laemmle's Monica on Saturday morning at 10AM
to hand them out. Art, I'd be honored if you'd help. Anyone
else who wants to come along and help, or just see the movie with us at 11AM,
is welcome.
I also plan to hand out free copies of Linux to interested people,
and am coordinating with a few people to burn 20 or so copies.

On Sunday, I'll be at the Installfest, but I'll be at the theater at 10AM
briefly to hand a stack of flyers to whoever wants to do publicity
duty that day (Art and ...?). Most of the remaining CDs should probably go
to the Installfest on Sunday. I have to leave at 12:30 on Sunday, so
I'll miss the tail end of the fun.

So who's planning on coming?

I think you pick 'My Preferences / Email Preferences / Edit',
add your new one if it's not there, and check the checkbox
next to it to make it the default, maybe?

Subject: Let's have some Microsoft Office users try Open Office...

Send Email Send Email

Businesses all over are being forced to decide whether to commit to
Microsoft's "Licensing 6.0" plan, which raises the
costs of using Microsoft software substantially.
(See http://www.microsoft.com/licensing/ ,
http://www.sunbelt-software.com/survey_02mar.cfm , and
http://www.hardwarecentral.com/hardwarecentral/editorials/4153/1/ )

To help educate businesses about alternatives, Lula is
planning to do a presentation about how businesses
can use Open Office and/or Star Office to replace
Microsoft Office, and avoid the "Licensing 6.0" fees
without sacrificing convenience or quality.

I just loaded up Open Office 1.0 on my wife's computer,
and she was impressed; at least on first glance, it
supported all her complicated Word documents well.
But we need more than one person, and more than one
hour, of experience *from the point of view of heavy
Microsoft Office users* before we say Open Office can do it all.
So let's put it to the test:
Who here uses Microsoft Windows and Microsoft Office at work?
Can those people try using Open Office 1.0
instead for a day, and report back?
And then report again at the end of five days?
It'd be very interesting to see what percentage of Microsoft Office
users were happy with Open Office at the end of a week.
